Week 106: Calm Mind Mega Latias

Latias-Mega @ Latiasite
Ability: Levitate

Scizor @ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 248 HP / 44 Atk / 16 Def / 200 SpD
Impish Nature
- Swords Dance
- Roost
- Bullet Punch
- Knock Off / U-turn

Mega Scizor makes a fantastic counter to Mega Latias. It resists both of Mega Latias's STAB attacks, taking pathetic damage from them, and proceeds to use it as set-up fodder with Swords Dance. Even at +6, and if Latias somehow manages to get that high it's pretty much game over anyways, it can't OHKO Mega Scizor, even with Thunderbolt or Surf, and Scizor can easily Roost off any damage it may have taken while fighting. At +2, Mega Scizor is able to 2HKO Mega Latias with Knock Off or OHKO with U-turn after any prior damage.
Mega Latias has to be at +3 to even 2HKO Mega Scizor, which it should never be able to do against it in a normal situation.

+2 44 Atk Mega Scizor Knock Off vs. 248 HP / 84+ Def Mega Latias: 200-236 (55 - 65%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 SpA Mega Latias Dragon Pulse vs. 248 HP / 200 SpD Mega Scizor: 51-60 (14.8 - 17.4%) -- possible 6HKO
+2 0 SpA Mega Latias Psyshock vs. 248 HP / 16+ Def Mega Scizor: 77-91 (22.4 - 26.5%) -- 21.9% chance to 4HKO

Tyranitar @ Choice Band
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 100 HP / 252 Atk / 156 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Superpower
- Pursuit

Nothing special or creative here. We all know CB Tar is one of the premier answers/counters to Mega Latias. Tar is able to stomach all of Mega Latias' attacks well. This includes a +0 and +1 Surf, which do 31.6 - 37.7% and 47.5 - 56.2% respectively. Either way, Tar can usually switch in directly and threaten to eliminate Mega Latias from the match with a powerful Crunch or Pursuit depending on whether a switch is predicted or not. If Mega Latias isn't carrying Surf, it's dealt with even more comfortably. Even if it's running Surf, Tar will at worst end up decently low on health after removing Mega Latias from the game. Considering the large amount of Pokemon that can benefit from Mega Latias' removal (Keldeo and so on), this trade can be well worth it for some teams. Other than that, there's not much else to say. CB Tar is a very effective and common way of dealing with Mega Latias and does the job well overall.

Unaware CM Clefable as a Counter

clefable.gif

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpDef
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Moonlight / Wish
- Heal Bell / Protect / Flamethrower

This particular Clefable set handles M-Latias pretty well due to Clef's typing, ability and physical bulk which enables it to sponge Psyshocks pretty easily as well as its coverage moves (Dragon Pulse does nothing and BoltBeam/Surf doesn't get STAB, which mkes it even weaker than Psyshock). Basically, you switch in on anything, recover your HP with Moonlight/WishTect and set up Calm Minds (one is enough to 2HKO and three are needed to OHKO) before easily KOing M-Latias.
0 SpA Mega Latias Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Clefable: 94-111 (23.9 - 28.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Mega Latias Psyshock vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 102-120 (25.9 - 30.5%) -- 1.7% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Mega Latias: 138-164 (38 - 45.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Mega Latias: 206-246 (56.7 - 67.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+3 0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Mega Latias: 344-408 (94.7 - 112.3%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO (guaranteed OHKO after SR)

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Return
- Earthquake
- Roost

+6 0 SpA Mega Latias Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Altaria: 662-780 (227.4 - 268%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 0 SpA Mega Latias Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Altaria: 248-294 (85.2 - 101%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
+6 0 SpA Mega Latias Psyshock vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Altaria: 423-498 (145.3 - 171.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 0 SpA Mega Latias Psyshock vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Altaria: 211-250 (72.5 - 85.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+6 0 SpA Mega Latias Thunderbolt/Surf vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Altaria: 165-195 (56.7 - 67%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Mega Latias: 360-426 (99.1 - 117.3%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

Mega Altaria is only a check to Mega Latias because tank well Thunderbolt and Surf, while being immune to Dragon Pulse. Altaria can tank only a +2 Psyshock and -barely- a +1 Ice Beam bar an high roll.
In return, Mega Altaria can almost OHKO back (3 HP makes the difference).

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Iron Head
- Spikes
- Roar
- Roost

Skarmory can simply Roar out Mega Latias each time it tries to setup and wear it down from Stealth Rock and other methods of chip damage a standard team would have. It also has the benefit of resisting it's STAB combination and having reliable Recovery to give Mega Latias massive headaches.

Aragorn the King I think you should slash Stored Power on there somewhere despite the many slashes already. Stored Power pretty much invalidates a lot of previous and upcoming threats as checks or counters since it gets stronger each boost regardless of Unaware. An example is this happening against Ferrothorn, Quag, and Clef which makes Ferro more of a hard check rather then counter since it can't phase it out and invalidating the latter two, although Quagsire is more tricky due to Toxic. I can see if you're reluctant to do so though

+3 0 SpA Mega Latias Stored Power (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 191-225 (54.2 - 63.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Mega Latias Stored Power (140 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Unaware Clefable: 219-258 (55.7 - 65.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Mega Latias Stored Power (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Unaware Quagsire: 285-336 (72.3 - 85.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Reserving scarf Garchomp as check

Also reflect type need to be slashed , with it Mlatias can deal easily with ferrothorn, clefable , and heatran bisharp, some variants of ttar(without superpower) and mega zor
Nah, it's a Calm Mind set and it needs 2 Attacking slots for at least a decent range of coverage rather than mono attacking

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 188 SpD / 68 Spe
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Toxic
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock

Basic gameplan is to Toxic Mega Latias and then Taunt it before it can set up any boosts.

+1 0 SpA Mega Latias Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 188+ SpD Heatran: 95-112 (24.6 - 29%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
+6 0 SpA Mega Latias Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 219-258 (56.7 - 66.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+6 0 SpA Mega Latias Dragon Pulse vs. 252 HP / 188+ SpD Heatran: 178-210 (46.1 - 54.4%) -- 5.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Outrage
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast / Stealth rock

Garchomp scarf is a good variation to surprise mega Latias, as it still offensive and tankchomp are the most common, you do notice stealth rock in options as 4th slot, I chose this move for two reasons: utility, an alternative rockers can always serve, but it depends on the team you builda, the second reason is to fool your opponent during the game, pretending to be offensive (given the lack of rocky helmet), so as to eliminate most likely with mega Latias (which runs max speed just for offensive chomp).

Also reflect type need to be slashed , with it Mlatias can deal easily with ferrothorn, clefable , and heatran bisharp, some variants of ttar(without superpower) and mega zor

Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Iron Head
- U-turn
- Fire Punch / Heart Stamp
- Healing Wish

Status: Hard Check

Now, you might be thinking "Viridi! Jirachi can only 4HKO Mega Latias!". Sure, that's true, except for the fact that Mega Latias can also only 4HKO back with Thunderbolt. Even then, Jirachi can usually just outspeed and flinch it to death, so it's unlikely it'll be able to set up on Jirachi or retaliate with Thunderbolt.

0 SpA Mega Latias Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Jirachi: 87-103 (25.5 - 30.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

MegaGross as Hard Check

metagross-mega.gif

Metagross-Mega @ Metagrossite
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Ice Punch
- Pursuit
- Zen Headbutt/Grass Knot/Hammer Arm

MegaGross is a great answer to Mega Latias, thanks to a combination of its natural typing, bulk and offensive prowess. The big question is why you would use Pursuit Mega Metagross instead of AV vanilla Metagross, and simply put, Latias can consistently heal up on regular Metagross due to its pretty absurd bulk. While Pursuit isn't exactly standard on Metagross, it gives such great overall utility and no doubt is a fantastic option for it. Furthermore, Ice Punch is a guaranteed 2HKO and Meteor Mash still has a great chance to, as well as having the chance to boost up; Latias' only real way of muscling past Metagross is to win constant 50/50s with Pursuit, or through Reflect Type + TWave; however even then, Latias has to risk a speed tie primarily, but due to the slight chance of Latias coming away as the victor, I've decided to only put MegaGross forward as a hard check.

252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Metagross Meteor Mash vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Mega Latias: 177-208 (48.7 - 57.3%) -- 93.4% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Metagross Ice Punch vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Mega Latias: 198-234 (54.5 - 64.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Metagross Pursuit (80BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Mega Latias: 210-248 (57.8 - 68.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 SpA Mega Latias Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Metagross: 80-95 (26.5 - 31.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Check: Mega Aggron

aggron-mega.gif

Aggron @ Aggronite
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 240 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Heavy Slam
- Dragon Tail / Thunder Wave / Avalanche
- Fire Punch / Earthquake / Rock Slide / Dragon Tail

Most of the other Steel-Types were taken, but oh well. Mega Aggron can switch in on any of Latias' moves and then proceed to cripple her with Thunder Wave, phaze her out with Dragon tail or just dent Latias with his Heavy Slam. Dragon Tail is almost mandatory. I just didn't know where to slash it. You need to either give up on speed control or coverage against other Pokemon. Either way, Mega Aggron will come out on top.

Some calcs:

0 Atk Mega Aggron Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Mega Latias: 147-174 (40.4 - 47.9%) -- 58.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

0 SpA Mega Latias Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 240 SpD Mega Aggron: 80-95 (23.2 - 27.6%) -- 75.2% chance to 4HKO
+1 0 SpA Mega Latias Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 240 SpD Mega Aggron: 119-141 (34.5 - 40.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

I put Mega Aggron as a check simply because it is worn down a little more easily than the other Steels and after the brawl with Latias, it's going to have trouble tanking other threats unless provided with wish support.

Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake
- Icicle Crash
- Superpower

Mamoswine resists BoltBeam coverage and takes less than half from Psyshock. In return, Mamoswine OHKOes Mega Latias with Icicle Crash. In fact, Mamoswine only loses if it had prior damage because +1 Dragon Pulse doesn't OHKO from full (causing both of them to KO each other).

0 SpA Mega Latias Dragon Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mamoswine: 186-219 (51.8 - 61%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 0 SpA Mega Latias Dragon Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mamoswine: 277-327 (77.1 - 91%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Mega Latias: 338-400 (93.1 - 110.1%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO

Bisharp @ Life Orb
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Sucker Punch
- Knock Off
- Iron Head

Bisharp is a nice Hard Check to CM Mega Latias, as it completely counters dual STAB variants because it resists Mega Lati's STABs and can set up Swords Dances on it. Even unboosted Knock Offs or Sucker Punches do a lot to Mega Latias. However, Bisharp is 2HKOed by +1 Thunderbolt or Surf and Sucker Punch can be played around with Recover, so you have to play well for Bisharp to beat Mega Latias if it carries TBolt or Surf.

252+ Atk Life Orb Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Latias: 283-335 (77.9 - 92.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Bisharp Knock Off vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Latias: 234-276 (64.4 - 76%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 8 SpA Mega Latias Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 175-206 (64.5 - 76%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 8 SpA Mega Latias Surf vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 175-206 (64.5 - 76%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 8 SpA Mega Latias Dragon Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 123-146 (45.3 - 53.8%) -- 44.1% chance to 2HKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Latias: 283-335 (77.9 - 92.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Bisharp Knock Off vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Latias: 234-276 (64.4 - 76%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
For these calcs you are using a different EVs spread on Mega Latias; you are using that one chosen by the calculator. The EVs spread used in this thread is 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe with Timid Nature, so your Bisharp hits harder than usual.
