Video Game Art

I am currently in a class that focuses on the impact of temporary exhibitions, and as our final project we are to propose a museum exhibition.

Naturally, my choice would involve gaming and the internet, so I came up with something tentatively titled "The Rise of Video Game Art" (creative, I know). Currently the plan is to map advances in gaming with subsequent improvement of video game art (including fanart). I'm asking the community for feedback/support on this idea. Surely there are many images to be found, but rarely is the author documented. Also, from my initial searches, the majority of the works are a bit too amateur to be featured in a mock-exhibition.

I have already seen the works featured in the iam8bit show, and will likely include some of them. If someone could find other works of this http://technabob.com/blog/2008/02/05/8-bit-video-game-art-by-jimi-benedict/ quality, it would be much appreciated.

An artist/sculptor, Kordian Lewandowski (I've never heard of him until Kotaku did an article on this), made this:

This could be helpful to you because it is in direct reference to Michelangelo's Pieta except for the fact that Peach is not his mother.

Some points:
-Christ's right arm in Pieta is very much recognized in the world since he is depicted (in death) in this way in many paintings and sculptures. Mario is seen with the same pose.
-Jacques-Louis David's Death of Marat was also influenced by Pieta. Even though Marat died for cause of the French Revolution (like Christ did for sins), there was a lot of controversy surrounding this painting because of the fact David compared him to Christ.
etc etc.

Now what did Mario die for?

Character design is an obvious possibility, especially as there's plenty of concept art as well as actual game images.

Game worlds and settings provide another source. The pre-rendered backdrops of the PSX Final Fantasy titles spring to mind.

With actual in-game stuff, you face the challenge that they're generally at a low resolution. Even modern 'HD' screenshots will struggle to look good if you upscale them to poster size.

Wow that's incredible jason! Would you know of any place where I could find more of those?

And thanks cantab, I'll look for some of those FF backgrounds.
