Heatran and Volcanion kind of overlap in the things they can check. It's like a big Venn-diagram of giant quadrupedal fire monsters. Because while Heatran has a lot more special walling potential, Volcanion leads more towards physical with the perfect typing (and ability) to counter Azumarill and check other physical threats like Talonflame and Bisharp.

They're both bulky, have high special attack, and are themed around volcanoes?
Typing, movepool, and abilities are all drastically different. You've got me with the volcano part though.
Stealth Rock weakness means its never going to be on Heatran's level
He's not saying that Heatran becomes bad once Volcanion is released; just that it can beat it 1v1.
I say no to Flare Blitz and Overheat, unless you happen to run a Scarf set. Volc should take advantage of its high Sp. Atk, so it shouldn't really run Flare Blitz. Even if it were to run a mixed set, it would more than likely run EQ and/or Stone Edge and have a special Fire attack.
Volcanion gets Superpower which unlike Earth Power actually hits something useful (Chansey). What does Earth Power hit... Tentacruel?
Other volcanions
Mark my words, air ballon volc will be a thing in the lower bracket.
Stone Edge can do the same thing or any other Rock move Volc learns.
Fair enough, though the usefulness of this depends on if Volcanion is actually common enough. It also gets Stone Edge to not only smash other Volcanion but also to take down Gyarados / Salamence etc without relying on a burn that you won't even get most of the time.

i thought of this set when looking for a greninja counter and more or less it does the job. due to its good physical bulk it can tank many hits and retaliate with powerful attacks. i actually don't know if it will be efficient tho since it is sr weak and can recover only with water absorb, maybe in stall teams it can be effective with some wish support. evs are generic they can be improved depending on what you need to tank or outspeed
