**Fire-Type Pokemon**: Volcarona has an issue hitting opposing Fire-type Pokemon for much damage and takes neutral damage from these Pokemons' STAB attacks, making Mega Charizard X, Heatran, and Mega Camerupt legitimate threats.
**Water-Type Pokemon**: Water-type Pokemon hit Volcarona for super-effective damage and many of them are resistant to Bug, allowing Pokemon like Gyarados, Primarina, Greninja, and Carracosta to defeat Volcarona.
**Flying-Type Pokemon**: Flying-type Pokemon can hit Volcarona for super-effective damage and are resistant to Bug, giving Volcarona checks in Dragonite, Landorus-T, Togekiss, and Mega Pinsir.
**Physical Attackers**: Strong physical attackers that can either survive a hit from Volcarona or outspeed it can easily dispatch Volcarona due to its poor Defense, which include Zygarde, Donphan, Garchomp, and Zeraora.

- Volcarona is a threatening Pokemon in the 1v1 metagame.
- The combination of its Bug-type STAB and Swarm bonuses with Z-Bug Buzz and a high Special Attack stat makes it one of the hardest-hitting Pokemon available.
- This is compounded by its access to Quiver Dance and moderately high special bulk, which allows it to check a wide variety of special attackers.
- Additionally, Steel-type Pomemon, which resist Volcarona's powerful Bug-type attacks are hit super-effectively by Volcarona's Fire-type attacks.
- While Volcarona's speed tier isn't poor, it is still outsped by Pokemon such as Garchomp, Mega Pinsir, and Kartana.
- Its relatively low physical bulk and common weaknesses to Water and Rock further hold it back, and it faces notable competition from other Fire-type wallbreakers like Mega Charizard Y and Victini.

Moves
========
- Bug Buzz is Volcarona's Bug-type STAB attack and when boosted by Buginium Z and Swarm, it hits incredibly hard.
- Overheat is used to hit Steel-type Pokemon which resist Savage Spin-Out for super-effective damage and receives STAB.
- Substitute allows Volcarona to safely lower its HP into Swarm range, boosting the power of Savage Spin-Out. It can also be used to block status moves like Toxic and dodge Z moves from slower opponents like Magnezone.
- Quiver Dance boosts Volcarona's Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed by 1 stage, which is useful against many special attackers, Pokemon that outspeed Volcarona, and walls such as Tapu Lele, Porygon-Z, and Mega Sableye.
========
- Maximum Special Attack and Speed EVs are used to hit as hard and outspeed as much as possible.
- A Timid nature is afforded so that Volcarona can consistently outspeed Pokemon like Tapu Lele and Haxorus.
- Buginium Z turns Bug Buzz into a 175 Base Power Savage Spin-Out.
- The Swarm ability boosts Volcarona's Savage Spin-Out and Bug Buzz when at low health, which is essential to this set.
========
- Against Pokemon that outspeed Volcarona such as Raikou, the correct play is almost always to use Quiver Dance as it boosts Volcarona's Special Attack while enabling it to outspeed the opponent.
- If at any point during the battle Volcarona can KO the opponent, it should. It is not advisable, for example, to use Quiver Dance or Substitute against Mega Slowbro or Magearna.
- Using Substitute to safely get Volcarona into Swarm range is often a good idea, but it is important to be wary of sound, multi-hit, and priority attacks from Pokemon like Porygon-Z when using Substitute.
- Play as though the opponent is the set that will allow you to win if you are unsure of their set. Extreme Speed Zygarde, for example, beats Volcarona regardless of how it plays, so against Zygarde, Volcarona should use Substitute three times followed by a Savage Spin-Out.
========
- Clefable makes for an excellent Volcarona teammate due to its ability to deal with Mega Charizards X and Y, Dragonite, Mega Gyarados, and Greninja for it. In return, Volcarona can beat troublesome Steel-type and stall Pokemon like Mega Metagross, Mega Slowbro, and Aegislash.
- Water-type Pokemon generally do a good job at covering up Volcarona's incapacity to deal with opposing Fire-type Pokemon. Examples of these include Mega Gyarados, Primarina, and Tapu Fini.
- Volcarona can defend against a wide variety of special attackers, so physically defensive Pokemon such as Mega Slowbro and Zygarde pair well with it.

Moves
========
- Quiver Dance boosts Volcarona's Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed by 1 stage, which is useful against many special attackers, Pokemon that outspeed Volcarona, and walls such as Tapu Lele, Porygon-Z, and Naganadel.
- Roost enables Volcarona to wall certain Pokemon in conjunction with Quiver Dance or Will-O-Wisp, bettering matchups against Pokemon like Mega Charizard Y and Primarina.
- Bug Buzz is Volcarona's Bug-type STAB attack and when boosted by Buginium Z and Swarm, it hits incredibly hard.
- Overheat hits Steel-type Pokemon super-effectively and receives STAB, allowing Volcarona to defeat Aegislash and Mega Mawile.
- Substitute allows Volcarona to safely lower its HP into Swarm range, boosting the power of Savage Spin-Out. It can also be used to block status moves like Toxic and dodge Z moves from slower opponents like Magnezone.
- Will-O-Wisp cuts the opponents Attack stat, which is useful against physical or mixed attackers, most notably Kommo-o.
========
- 240 HP and 32 Defense EVs survive the combination of Zen Headbutt and Bullet Punch from Mega Metagross while 20 Speed EVs outpace Timid Magnezone
- The remaining 216 EVs are allocated into Special Defense to give Volcarona the best odds possible against special attackers like Primarina, and for the same reason, a Calm nature is afforded.
- Buginium Z turns Bug Buzz into a 175 Base Power Savage Spin-Out.
- The Swarm ability boosts Volcarona's Savage Spin-Out and Bug Buzz when at low health, which is much more useful than Volcarona's other abilities in most situations.
Usage Tips
========
- Against Pokemon that outspeed Volcarona such as Naganadel and Raikou, the correct play is almost always to use Quiver Dance as it boosts Volcarona's Special Attack while enabling it to outspeed the opponent.
- If at any point during the battle Volcarona can KO the opponent, it should. It is not advisable, for example, to use Quiver Dance against Mega Slowbro or Kartana.
- If Substitute is being run, using it to safely get Volcarona into Swarm range is often a good idea, but it is important to be wary of sound, multi-hit, and priority attacks from Pokemon like Porygon-Z and Primarina when using it.
- If Will-O-Wisp is being used, it should be used on turn 1 against Kommo-o and followed by Z-Quiver Dance. This allows Volcarona to avoid being put into KO range while under the influence of Taunt.

Other Options
=============
- On its offensive set, Volcarona may opt to run Hidden Power Ice or Rock to check Landorus-T or Mega Charizard Y, but these are not recommended because bulky Landorus-T can survive Hidden Power Ice and max Speed Mega Charizard Y can outspeed and OHKO with Blast Burn. Additionally, each move on the set are important and are generally not be worth dropping.
