Nidoking... One of my favorite pokemon since the beginning of time. Such a cool design if you ask me, but I digress lets get into the specifics shall we?

Weaknesses: Psychic, Ground, Water, Ice
Comment: Yea its weak to 3 particuarly popular types Ground, Water, and with Garchomp-fear-fever Ice. Not a great thing.

Resistances: Electric (Immune), Fighting, Rock, Poison (x4), Bug
Comment: Well It resists some popular movetypes as well... Most notable is the resistance to Rock which is always helpful with Stealth Rock projected to be all over the place.

OK I think the point is pretty clear that this things movepool is pretty extensive... Now for the hard part I guess...

Moveset 1

Nidoking@Choice Specs
Nature: Timid (Most likely, Modest could work)
EVs: 252 SA, 252 Speed
- Ice Beam
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Focus Blast / Thunderbolt

I had Considered Dragon Pulse, but Since Earth Power + Flamethrower gets you full coverage mostly... I figure use Ice Beam instead to hit Dragons Harder... Focus Blast I guess was in response to trying to have something hit Tyranitar and Blissey at least for decent damage... Thunderbolt is if you want to get rid of Gyarados faster. I thought of this semi in response to the Choice Specs thread. Nidoking doesnt quite have the SA to really really dent things without Choice Specs SA wise I dont think tho.

Moveset 2:
Nidoking@Choice Band
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 252 Attack 252 Speed
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab / Focus Punch
- Stone Edge
- Megahorn / Sucker Punch

Yea I am terrible at this cant you tell? Pretty Much a Rhyperior copy for the most part I guess... I Have used Choice Banded Setups for Nidoking, they work fairly decently, but he gets in trouble against some other things that are faster than he is... Still, you can take out a lot tho... Out of Curiosity has anyone yet tried Sucker Punch on a Choice Banded Setup? (I would have guessed by now SOMEONE would have thought to try to abuse that...)

Considerations: Using Shed Skin Item to make sure you can switch out against Dugtrio which would be a problem for poor Nidoking... (Although I do wonder if Sucker Punch could OHKO Dugtrio with its poor defenses and low HP Base... someone needs to try that out)

Nidoking is sooo Cool, its probably still only a borderline pokemon, but at least it got better for this generation moderately, which is always a plus.

Discuss... (?)

nidoking will still remain in UU for the most part, still makes a decent hera counter but even with the additions from D/P it doesnt have a chance to compete in OU

I like the idea of a Life Orb Nidoking set. Ice Beam/Earthquake/Megahorn/Stone Edge or Fire Blast

Also do we know how much attack Rivalry raises? Is it just physical attack?

A choice glasses Nidoking wastes the potential of rivalry. It is also comically weak. Choice scarf makes a half decent option, but choice band is needed for a guaranteed OHKO on Azelf and an average OHKO on Dugtrio with sucker punch. Alternatively, you can just rely on rivalry and throw on leftovers or expert belt. Comedy focus sash anti starter moveset:

Nidoking rivalry
~ Adamant @focus sash
Earthquake
Avalanche
Sucker punch
Counter/brick break

Nidoking has a lot of options and is workable in top tier. However, it is clearly under qualified to be a standard staple. It will be happier in borderline/underused, where there are fewer genderless pokemon, and rivalry becomes tempting.

Edit: hi I'm noob.

It was needed...

Nidoking is sweet... I loved him in R/B/Y

He has nice options, and rivalry is pretty nice, especially if you get one of those guys who decides to make all his pokemon male...

STAB EQ is nice, stone edge is cool, and he has some other good ones, but still has the fairly common weaknesses. He won't be too common I don't think, but definitely a cool poke overall.

Ah Hippo, very good, yes the picture of The King was definately needed... Thank you... Quite frankly your post inspired this post for the most part. Saw The King, and thought We need a Nidoking discussion topic... Perhaps Seaking, Slowking and Slaking and Kingdra will be on their way soon :-p...

I do like the idea of Sucker Punch / Avalanche on the same set, but Nidoking's defenses are rather meh. He can really only afford to get off one Avalanche, and while that works better than on other Pokemon due to Sandstorm immunity Stealth Rock ruins Focus Sash. I generally prefer Focus Sash on leads since they can't be wrecked by Stealth Rock being out.

Personally I prefer a Choice Band set. Megahorn / Earthquake / Thunderpunch / Ice Punch would work except for the lack of Rivalry, so if I wanted Rivalry I'd do Megahorn / Earthquake / Stone Edge / Sucker Punch.

CB Sucker Punch does a lot to Azelf. Risky, but could be a decent option.
