Warhammer 40K discussion

I'm just starting to get into W40K, and have started collecting the Eldar, I'm about halfway to my first 500 point list, and after purchasing the Eldar Battle force and a Farseer I should have it.

to celebrate how awesome that game and its back story I shall create this thread in honor of all things W40K (the tabletop game and the Dawn of War rts series)

I was somewhat surprised to not see a single w40K thread in this subsection, as it is a very well developed table top strategy game, and Dawn of War is one of the most groundbreaking rts games of all time. (yes its came before Company of Heroes and was made by the same company). I also figured that on a pokemon strategy website there would at least be a few other people dorky enough to enjoy the rich sci fi environment of Warhammer 40K.

at any rate, I was wondering what races if any you guys collect / play on DoW

I shall finish this post with the awesomeness that is the librarian from Dawn of War

Congrats on entering the world of 40K :)

I currently collect a Chaos Marine army (Nurgle/Khorne) and have about 700 points of it painted, and my full 2000 point army planned.

I also have 1500 points of Tau, although i have not done anything with them in a while, due to my new found love of Nurgle Marines. (Toughness 5?! Yes Please!)

I also have a love of 40K literature, and probably have like 30+ books by various authors, my favourite probably being Dan Abnett, and then Ben Counter

I used to have a bunch of dark eldar, but it soon became apparent i didn't have the money or time to commit to buying and painting raiders and troops :<
I still have it all, though, and occasionally me and a friend of mine break it out for a while but it always seems to fall off the radar after a few weeks.
Still, i really love the raiders, they look and play fantastic

yea money and time are both difficult things to come by... My collection is going rather slowly at the moment. Of course its more of a long term thing, and I've found that in highschool when I used to collect Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings miniatures, that painting and watching your paining improve was really rewarding. So even if I only painted like 3 models a month, I found it to remain rather worthwhile. Hopefully I'll feel the same way 5 years later.

I'm playing Eldar too, but 4th Ed is kinda shitty for us unless they make Wraithguard less expensive, and I am a horrid painter, so I am not sure as to whether I wanna continue collecting.

I already have a Farseer, 5 Dark Reapers w/ Exarch, Falcon Grav-Tank, and 8 Dire Avengers, based off this list:

Eldar 1,000 List

Farseer w/ Guide, Runes of Warding (90)

10 Dire Avengers
Exarch w/ Shimmershield and Power Weapon, Defend (162)

5 Dire Avengers (60)

6 Fire Dragons
Exarch w/ Tank Hunters (123)

Falcon w/ Starcannon, Shuriken Cannon, Holo-Fields, Spirit Stones (195)

5 Dark Reapers
Exarch w/ Eldar Missile Launcher, Fast Shot (217)

5 Warp Spiders
Exarch w/ Powerblades, Exarch Deathspinner, Withdraw (152)

999 points

32 models, 1 tank

just out of curiosity why are you going shimmershield and power weapon on your Dire Avengers?

for comparison the 500 pt list I'm going to run is something like this

Farseer w/ Guide, Doom, Spirit Stones

10 Dire Avengers
Exarch w/ duel catapults, bladestorm

10 Guardians
Eldar Missile Launcher

2 Warwalkers
haven't quite figured out the heavy weapons load out on em yet...

I'll also have a wave serpent from the Battle Force and a 5 extra Dire Avengers, which should help move up to 750 or 1000 pts.

also 5th edition officially came out a while ago ;) so fourth edition isn't really a big deal anymore.

I think I'm going to paint my guys in the Altansar scheme, since I like the backstory of that craftworld.

I need Shimmershield on my Dire Avengers so that my avengers can tarpit enemy units (meaning, lock them up in combat) because I am playing mostly long range firepower (note the Dark Reapers that are more or less the main killing force in my list).

And yeah what I meant was 5th ed was bad ^_^; Our skimmers got hit a lot and we lost a huge amount for firepower. The falcon is even more invincible but it cannot kill shit anymore, and the loss of Vypers means that S6 gun spam is going to be less viable. Vypers can get 6 shuriken cannon shots for 60 points, in comparison Warp Spiders in the same slot cost 23 points iirc and only get 2 shots. War Walkers are of course the awesome with scatter lasers but they cost a bomb.

I tried 40K when i was younger but I can't say I found to be all too great. It always seemed to turn into long gunlines shooting each other. IMO fantasy has much more depth and subtley and is generally more fun to play.

A few years ago I bought a big Tau set. Put everything together, painted a few drones, bought a hammerhead, and then stopped altogether. I cannot stress how slow and bad I was at painting those things. Not to mention how expensive the little suckers are.

Its a shame really because I did like the whole concept and story, and being on a Pokemon forum I also like collecting. I never did fully grasp the actual game play and after a while my interest just disappeared. I do pop into the store every now and again to check the new models.

I used to play LotR quite seriously a while back (I used to moderate the biggest LotR SBG site on the internet, woo!), went to a few Games Days and the like. It was the the painting that hooked me at first but I enjoyed the gaming too...it made for a nice social activity. 40k tempted me throughout, but I just didn't have the financial clout to play two games so I was always able to resist!

woo new models!

I got a few new models over break, as in the eldar battleforce and have a pretty sweet first list... assuming people don't run many tanks at 500 points ;)

Farseer 83
-Singing Spear, Doom

Wave Serpent 100
-twin linked Shuriken Cannons

10 Dire Avengers 152
-Exarch, Duel Shuriken Catapults, Bladestorm

10 Guardians 85
-Shuriken Cannon

War Walker 40
-2 Shuriken Cannons

War Walker 40
-2 Shuriken Cannons

total 500 points

Alot of units, alot of bullets =D I would not want to fight this with a horde list, though mechanized lists might give me a bit of a headache with only lucky shots from shuriken cannons, and the singing spear being able to damage vehicles for me

All thats left is some magnet fu, priming and painting. Then its time to take her for a spin at my local hobby shop =)
