Arena
Water Gym
Following the directions to the water gym, you reach a small lake surrounded on all sides by grassy hills, darkened into grey-scale by the cloudy skies. As the path finishes, you walk down a small pontoon over the lake, and look over the side to see that it is completely still, reflecting like a mirror the brewing storm above. The only interruptions to the lake are small sheets of ice which spread out like a spider's web, clearly emanating from a hut on the other side which seems to be partially underwater.

You stand still for a moment, watching thunder strike in the distance and feeling the occasional gust of wind begin to pick up. As the ripples clear, you notice the reflection of a man riding a Pokemon out from the old hut across the lake, and looking up you see a grey-haired man dressed all in blue standing proudly atop a Lapras, looking down at you as the Lapras moves silently out.

Welcome, says the trainer. I am Athenodoros, leader of the Water Gym. He rides out further until he can step out onto one of the ice sheets, and motion Lapras to move in front of him as he continues. In this gym we pay homage to the diversity and power of water and Water-type Pokemon. We battle on the lake, using only what you might expect to find in the harsh conditions when water is the only plentiful resource. But don't worry. The ice sheets serve as viable platforms and can support a weight or carry a pulse if need be. We battle three Pokemon against three. So begin! Let us see who will release first!

Conditions:
Pokemon battle on ice sheets. This means that there are no sources of grass, but adequate rock sources exist beneath the lake and clearly water sources are not a problem. It also means that Pokemon with a density (WC/SC) of more than 1 will fall through the ice after a round standing on it, losing HP all the time they are in, which is equal to their weight class. Exceptions to this are Pokemon which can breathe underwater (Dragonite line and Water-types), are Ice-typed, are Flying-typed or levitate through trait, ability or Magnet Rise, or have the abilities to give a water or ice immunity or resistance. This effect is doubled if a seismic move weakens the ice during the round.
The overcast sky cuts the affects of Solarbeam, Synthesis, Moonlight and Morning Sun like Rain, as well as cutting the duration of non-Heat Rock sun to two rounds.

Enigmatic, trend setting (yes I am talking about THAT sub) and oftentimes brilliant, ASB's resident Water type specialist finds another challenger staring him in the face. Frosty has been training, reffing and challenging gyms like a man possessed and when he isn't busy screwing me out of my dignity he is actually quite successful as a challenger. The coin is already in the air for this one so lets see how it lands. As always heads is for the leader to act first and tails the challenger..

Well Heads it indeed is!

wtf. I actually waited to finally claim my Tentacruel in fear of the ridiculous number of Grass-types in your profile. And I was really looking forward to using him. Oh well. Hopefully he can get a matchup with Ludicolo. Still, I'm quite looking forward to this. Even if leading looks like it gives me a big disadvantage. Still, this girl always serves well. Out you come, Actaea!

I guess having a profile filled with grass types did some good. Tentacruel patches up some of your weaknesses quite well.

Also, I almost considered bringing Vaporeon for monotype goodness, but Snorlax will suffice.

To be honest, of the possible Gym Challenges, this is the one I looked forward to the most. A Good battle against a terrific player on a non-biased arena. I just hope hax doesn't strike (although I came ready to be screwed by it) and you doesn't forget important stuff like Own Tempo Ludicolo, so the match is as good as I've anticipated. I want a fun match and I think/hope I will get one here!

But enough jibber-jabber. Let's get the show on the road!

Come, Bellum with Everstone!

Discharge - Thunderbolt - Discharge
IF Bide THEN 15hp substitute - Light Screen - Thunderbolt starting on the action Bide was used
IF Dive AND Starmie isn't paralysed THEN Sucker Punch (lol) and push back

And so we get to the matchup I knew would happen and still can't do anything with. Annoying game of rock-paper-scissors we had going there. But I think this is the least bad option. At least for this round.

I think Athenodoros has sacraficed one too many goats and the hax gods are overstuffed, because they certainly were not on his side here. Even with his catch all solution Astraea the Starmie on the field he knows he still faces one hell of a challenge in the Rotom Washer they call Bellum staring him down. Atheno does all he can and looks to a Confuse Ray to solve all his problems. Things don't start off well though when the confusion is only slight and it worsens once again as Bellum is unaffected by the shining beam on its first action. Indeed everything is just piling up on the poor leader as a Discharge from the former ghost not only hits critically but also paralyzes Starmie right from the get go. Yeah, that couldn't have gone much worse. With the starfishes usually reliable speed significantly lessened Bellum is able to follow up with a one-two blow in the form of a Thunderbolt that strikes true. Astraea is able to nibble a little more at that berry but unfortunately it's all gone now and the assault doesn't look to be stopping. The unfortunate Starmie isn't even able to land a blow back with its paralysis already acting up. The electrival assualt continues from the bulky Bellum with another Discharge before Astraea is finally able to mount an offence with some Psyshock. I guess at least paralysis meant it was boosted by Analytic but Starmie and Atheno are still severely on the back foot here.. Oh and did I mention that Frosty's entire team is immune to the icy effect of the Water Gym? This boy came prepared.

Well, that couldn't really have gone any worse. Although, releasing first against that team meant that there was no way that it could have ended well. Everything had a perfect counter. So, we're going to have to do something a bit different: sacrifice a Pokemon. I don't know that people really do it in ASB, but it will definitely break the annoying switch cycle which is the other option. Here we go:

Pain Split ~ Psyshock ~ Psychic
IF
he uses Double Team, use Surf and move actions along
IF he uses a Protective/Evasive move A1, use Psychic and move actions along

And hopefully we don't get smashed too badly.

Sometimes switching is necessary. Especially when using a paralysed Natural Cure Starmie.

Well, all oportunities must be seized and good veekun says that Pain Split fails against a sub so...:

20hp Substitute - Thunderbolt - Discharge

It leaves a bitter taste, given the haxxy circunstamces, but I guess it can't be helped.

Astraea and Atheno opt to stay in despite the unfavourable situation and take whatever is coming to them. Unfortunately what's coming is a reasonably sturdy Substitute which completely and totally blocks the Starmie's attempts to Pain Split. From there on out it's the same story as last time as a barrage of electrical assaults from Bellum are enough to bring Astraea down without having played a huge factor in this match. It did manage another Psyshock inbetween the shockings it left the sub still reasonably healthy and Bellum ready and raring for whatever counter the leader could have waiting in the wings.

lovely.

I needed 8 subs for the optimal actionset, but i have only 2 so this will have to make due...

Rest - snore - snore
If imprison a1 AND Rest is imprisoned THEN Pain Split - light screen - chill
If awake THEN thunder a2 and shadow ball a3

Countercoat + imprison + torment + Dive = glorious time ordering first. These orders won't accomplish much, but I am not in a hurry.

With a 125 HP mini shrimp sitting in the wings the leader would be a fool not to send it out. Actaea also happened to bring along a massive bag of tricks that Frosty did his best to avoid but as he said two substitutions can only do so much. The Krilowatt releases a Confuse Ray to mess up Bellum's state of mind and for this time at least the RNG is going in Atheno's favour as Bellum weakly hits itself in confusion and Frosty's original plan is a little messed up. Actaea blasts away the Rotom's substitute with a crack of Thunder as Bellum has to readjust but is still able to get off a mighty Thunder of its own for more than decent neutral damage. With the sub down and Bellum suitably incapacitated Kril is finally able to get off a damaging shot with a Thunderbolt, but the super bulky washing machine takes it rather well. Bellum ends the round with a Shadow Ball to greatly outdamage the shrimp even after having to order first. Atheno's troubles are compounded by having to make the first move next up also.

Feeling the pain of his turn ordering first against such vast movepools Athenodoros just goes the safe option and keeps on attacking. Unfortunately for him Actaea's Discharge is almost laughably weak against the bulky Bellum and it fails to paralyze either. Frosty is making no such miss-step as an Electroweb from the Washing Machine ensures the Rotom siezes the speed edge. It wastes no time putting this win to use either as Bellum promptly Splits its Pain with the Krilowatt to pretty drastically effect the HP totals. Atheno tried to plan for this but Actaea is just a smidge too late in setting up a Substitute. At least the doll is able to remain standing through Bellum's Volt Switch and Atheno will get the advantage of having it up and facing whichever it is Frosty wants to bring in next. That's about where the good news for our fearless gym leader stops though, because even though Kril's second Discharge was a critical hit Bellum has actually gained health for the round!

Thinking now, Ludicolo deals less damage than Rotom and activates Enigma Berry, so I shouldn't have used volt switch haha.

but this looks swell, let's continue.

Go go Odolwa the Ludicolo with Water Stone!

In what even Frosty himself realised quickly switching in Odolwa might not have been the greatest of ideas when Bellum was already doing so well. I guess it's no real harm when you already have a strong position and Ludicolo is by no means a weakness here in the water gym. Taking advantage of its Water Stone activated Swift Swim and the Electroweb that pinned Actaea down in the earlier round the dancing pineapple is able to set up a beefy Substitute of its own to take any of the Krills blows. But luck is at least a little on Atheno's side here as a Thunderbolt hits the decoy critically and allows him to bring it down in two blows with a Volt Switch of her own. At the same time Ludicolo dispatched with Krilowatt's sub with an interesting move choice in Hyper Voice. Despite the fact that it would have allowed her to gobble up some berry Actaea decides to Detect the incoming Giga Drain and make it through the round unscathed right before she switches out to Tentacruel.

Set on at least regaining some dignity in this match Atheno sends out that specially made Ludicolo killer he had commissioned in Syclla the Tentacruel. Unfortunately for her Odolwa has an answer for most things and he Dives on underwater and draws the substutution out of Tentacruel and has her let loose a Surf that manages to hit the diving Ludicolo but not really all that hard through such a resistance. Of course Odolwa's Dive his equally weakly but has that added bonus of avoiding the potentially crippling damage from Tentacruel's dreaded Poison STAB. A swift Fake Out from the crafty pineapple prevents any other kinds of Sludge coming from Syclla while the end of the round is a repeat of the beginning and thanks to its Water Stone Odolwa is even recovering some HP and staying in a strong position. I think Frosty may have a switch in store however..
