I know the suggestions thread exists, but I think this deserves an actual discussion.
I've posted in the suggestions thread multiple times, but to my knowledge the idea has gotten no official response. Instead it's just gotten suggestions for "work arounds" which aren't really work arounds because they don't fix the problem.
The problem being, a lot of people on showdown are complete jerks, and even if they shouldn't be banned for just writing irritating things, I shouldn't be forced to read them. Therefore, there should be a button or command to let me ignore chat messages from the other battler in a particular match when that other battler proves to be a jerk. Sometimes it IS funny when it's nonsensical raging, but other times it just ruins the fun especially if I'm just playing casually. I think people should be allowed to choose whether they want to read and respond to the other battler's messages or just ignore them altogether.
(Also, I'm talking about when I'm battling someone else whose messages I don't want to read, not when I'm spectating because when I'm spectating I can just leave.)
Now, let me go through things that DON'T work for this, that people have consistently suggested as a solution when I wrote about this in the suggestions thread. Please don't bring up any of these options (unless I'm wrong about something and one of these actually DOES solve this problem--though I'm certain none of them do):
1. "Ignore spectators" does NOT work because it only keeps me from reading the chat messages of non-battlers. I'm looking for an option to make it so that I don't see the other battler's messages.
2. Using /ignore <user> does NOT work because it only ignores them outside of battles e.g. in the lobby chat.
3. Using /modchat + or /modchat players does NOT work because it does the same thing as "ignore spectators." And yes, /modchat + does still allow both battlers to read each others' messages even if neither one is voiced.
If a showdown official reads this and decides this isn't necessary or not a good idea or whatever (or perhaps if it's already a planned feature), then go ahead and close the thread. I just want an official response, since all the replies I tend to get in the suggestions thread about this are people telling me one of the above three things or other people telling those people why those things don't actually work.
Also,
-"If you don't like it then don't read it" is dumb because 1) I don't know that someone is a jerk until I read their messages for the first time and 2) reading is involuntary so what this advice basically means is "don't look at the log" which I have to do if I need to look something up such as how much damage a move did on a previous turn. Also, angry battlers can spam up the chat by posting 3, 5, even 10 or more angry spam messages per turn.
-"Get over it" is dumb because there's no reason we can't at least have the option (assuming it wouldn't be too difficult technically to implement). If you enjoy/don't mind that kind of thing then you wouldn't have to do anything. Those of us who would enjoy the game more with the option can utilize it, and then everyone's happy.
Anyway, leave your thoughts about this if you please and showdown officials, I'd really like a post from one of you guys/gals too. Thanks.
