We need an "ignore other battler" option

I know the suggestions thread exists, but I think this deserves an actual discussion.

I've posted in the suggestions thread multiple times, but to my knowledge the idea has gotten no official response. Instead it's just gotten suggestions for "work arounds" which aren't really work arounds because they don't fix the problem.

The problem being, a lot of people on showdown are complete jerks, and even if they shouldn't be banned for just writing irritating things, I shouldn't be forced to read them. Therefore, there should be a button or command to let me ignore chat messages from the other battler in a particular match when that other battler proves to be a jerk. Sometimes it IS funny when it's nonsensical raging, but other times it just ruins the fun especially if I'm just playing casually. I think people should be allowed to choose whether they want to read and respond to the other battler's messages or just ignore them altogether.

(Also, I'm talking about when I'm battling someone else whose messages I don't want to read, not when I'm spectating because when I'm spectating I can just leave.)

Now, let me go through things that DON'T work for this, that people have consistently suggested as a solution when I wrote about this in the suggestions thread. Please don't bring up any of these options (unless I'm wrong about something and one of these actually DOES solve this problem--though I'm certain none of them do):

1. "Ignore spectators" does NOT work because it only keeps me from reading the chat messages of non-battlers. I'm looking for an option to make it so that I don't see the other battler's messages.
2. Using /ignore <user> does NOT work because it only ignores them outside of battles e.g. in the lobby chat.
3. Using /modchat + or /modchat players does NOT work because it does the same thing as "ignore spectators." And yes, /modchat + does still allow both battlers to read each others' messages even if neither one is voiced.

If a showdown official reads this and decides this isn't necessary or not a good idea or whatever (or perhaps if it's already a planned feature), then go ahead and close the thread. I just want an official response, since all the replies I tend to get in the suggestions thread about this are people telling me one of the above three things or other people telling those people why those things don't actually work.

Also,
-"If you don't like it then don't read it" is dumb because 1) I don't know that someone is a jerk until I read their messages for the first time and 2) reading is involuntary so what this advice basically means is "don't look at the log" which I have to do if I need to look something up such as how much damage a move did on a previous turn. Also, angry battlers can spam up the chat by posting 3, 5, even 10 or more angry spam messages per turn.
-"Get over it" is dumb because there's no reason we can't at least have the option (assuming it wouldn't be too difficult technically to implement). If you enjoy/don't mind that kind of thing then you wouldn't have to do anything. Those of us who would enjoy the game more with the option can utilize it, and then everyone's happy.

Anyway, leave your thoughts about this if you please and showdown officials, I'd really like a post from one of you guys/gals too. Thanks.

You could always just position the browser window so it doesn't show the battle chat

He did make a point that he sometimes needs to look at the log. This is the same as suggesting him to not read it.

I like the idea. Showdown has been festering with assholes lately and simply being able to ignore them would be nice.

The other option would be to have separate feeds for battle logs and messages from opponents/spectators, which could be muted without muting the battle log.

I think /ignore should be changed to work for battles as well. It would fix this problem and work towards the completion of the sim, at the very least. I'm impressed it doesn't work for them already, I see no reason for it not to.

I fully agree something should be implemented because I've had people ask me how to deal with it in Comp Tutoring with just blatantly rude people and jerks in battles and the only solution I'm able to give is to address a Lobby mod. Something like an ignore battler would be nice as it can be a let down to deal with said individuals especially in longer matches where the focus becomes more about the problem person than the actual battle itself. As SoulRed stated the solutions usually provided are temporary and generally don't leave a lasting impact. It's a shame that a sour group of individuals take the fun out of those who are not at fault and are more focused on having fun and or battling, so I would love for the staff to state their opinion on the matter as well.

Hi there. You've made a good post and tackled pretty much everything, which is great. Obviously we'd prefer if PS users didn't have to ignore each other, but your viewpoint is totally relevant and understood. First things first - I can see you understand the difference between "they're a dick" and "I just don't want to listen to them", but if it's the former a global driver+ should be your first port of call - you're doing their future opponents and the community a favour by letting staff know if somebody's being an asshole (or timestalling, we handle that too). Anyway, if it's just a case of you not feeling like listening to them, I think

should be changed to work in all chats (I thought it did t be honest, but apparently not). That'd solve your issue nicely without the need to code in a new command or button (though that might be more ideal). Remember to /unignore if necessary. I'll let Zarel know, anyway.

Thanks for the reply. I think that would work just fine :) And actually, I didn't know I could PM a driver for help with people like that, so thanks for pointing that out. What is the prefix for a global driver, is it %?

If users are being abusive, a user with a % or @ behind their name in lobby is who to go to. Here's a full staff list.
