Other Weather Testing on the CAP Server

QFT.

This is really the biggest thing I want to know. If several well-made non-weather teams can't compete with a Rain or Sun team without resorting to gimmicks -- then we have a problem.

Early indications show that perma-weather is quite strong. Maybe, the turn limits will help even it out. Should be fun to test.

We need a lot more testers to sign up.

Actually if a lot of good teams that don't involve weather do horribly against weather teams, we don't have a dilemma. If you remember when sand teams first became popular, they caused a lot of problems versus normal teams. It just a matter of accommodation for the trainer. A lot of things go wrong if you're facing something you aren't used to, that isn't just for Pokemon, that is just in general. The more cozy the trainer gets with facing weather teams, the higher the probabilty the trainer has to deal with them with unrestraint.

The sun and rain will limit the weather using trainer more than you think. Having to narrow down half or even all of the team, so that Pokemon can benefit from the weather which will have the trainer focused on specific types. Also, the trainer will have to pick Pokemon that won't get hurt from weather. For example, the sun trainer may want to use Jirachi, but it really won't be a good idea thanks to the boost of Fire attacks, which is its weakness. In conclusion, if you can believe it or not, it will allow the non weather team to know what to expect, and may even put them at an advantage, as eccentric as that may sound.

Honestly, if someone else is willing to be the leader, that would be better. I cannot guarantee that I will dedicate it enough time for a serious research.

Ideas for people to replace TM:
Spanky
Bass
Plus
oh no
Dixie Normas (SkarmBlissCounter on smogon)

Hybrid (ss4_Hybrid on smogon)
Itachi 2008

well I am sure at least one of them wants to help.

And can we join more than one team?
I for one would like the option to join the Red (gogo SDGrowth) and White (Sash TG Syclant Rules) teams, or possibly Clear (why not?) or Purple (to compare with Blue).

To be on two teams could be nice. I offered Bass to join mine, he said he would if he were allowed to join more than one because he had already signed up for a different one. There are probably at least a few people who are like that as well.

I asked Mekkah why he wasn't jumping in the middle of this. He's got finals for the next two weeks, so he's out.

Spanky has been bitching about weather for a while. He needs to step up and do something about it.

Participating on multiple teams seems fine.

Also, it's Groudino, not Groudonino....

If no one doesn't mind, i can be a leader, i would enjoy being a leader of the Drizzle using Pokemon, i'm not to familiar with its name.

Right I had a battle, not got my rain team on this comp so I used Hail, my opponent used Sun.
It was not the greatest battle and I don't have much time right now, so I have not put many comments about it

eric the espeon: posting in testing thread
So in the end even with the weather on his side I beat him, if he had weather all the game he would have had a much better chance.

your opponent also played like shit there is not enough variation in abilty if there is only 5 people per division, this needs increasing.

I would like to help out any team but the brown/white team.

I wouldn't mind joining any team, although I have made a lvl 78 kyogre team. I may not be available much in early June cos I have heaps of exams.

also is the weather idea going to be out of the next concept poll, because thats really the only way to get this to work.
The current CAP project is nearly finished, and you are probably going to need a month to test weather effects to a good level.
So unless you plan on not doing a CAP project for a month how will you handle this.

I'll volunteer to join a team, I've been in a bit of a slump recently (As a matter of fact, I haven't played on shoddy since my infamous butterfree sweep).

This might help revitalize me.

People, im going to say one team per person, only because it makes it easier on me to keep track. Also, when signing up, please specify a team.

I would love if we could expand the test. Right now with seven teams, that's 35 participants. At the pace people are signing up, I'm worried we won't come close to filling that.

Like SO MANY things in online communities, everyone talks the talk, no one walks the walk. People will give 1 line postcount++ comments from the gallery all day long. But the minute some real effort is required, it falls on the same small handful of active contributors. BTW, I am not bashing those that have RL commitments. I'm just pointing out that available contributors are always in short supply. It's an unfortunate reality.

I have no interest in sitting around talking instead of doing. And I'm not going to beg people to pitch in. We'll do the best we can, with the people who are interested and available to help out.

i have the sprites for you doug. also, for grass knot purposes, keep the same weights.

Here they are:

To be honest you did have a nice bit of luck there. :x

your opponent also played like shit
well, they did not play excellently.
never said it was a good match, just a weather one.

I really think it would be easier to get more people to join if they could join multiple teams, I don't want to confine myself to one type of weather when I could try a few different types. And the leaders of the groups could keep track mostly.

DJD said:
Well this type of contribution that most people could do may not require much effort besides making a new team and posting some logs here with a comment or two. If we make this clear I think quite a few people would be happy to join.

Now that I think of it... Do we really need team leaders? Why not just assign some people to each team? What does differentiate a leader from a normal member of a team?

Right now, the distinction looks forced to me. Also, I reiterate my willingness to participate as a Clear team member, or as the leader if the idea of having leaders goes on and no one else wants to be the leader.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is supposed to test the effects of weather, not NOT if Kyogre / Groudon are viable in OU at level 78, correct? If so, posts talking specifically about Kyogre and Groudon are off topic to this whole discussion, since they will not be moved down to OU.

From my experiences, Rain is most definitly a broken form of weather. Sun on the other hand, is much harder to use in many cases. Let me explain:

Rain-
I think every Swift Swim user is a Water type, and therefore gains an additional 1.5x boost on their main type of STAB attack. Let's also take a look at the main swift swim users that I have met so far: Kingdra, Ludicolo, Kabutops.

Kingdra's power is already known, and like Bass pointed out, there is really very little that can stop it. I could use a 252 HP / 252 SpDef Cresselia, but she is 2HKO'd by Hydro Pump. A Calm, max HP, max SpDef Milotic works as well. Other than that, Vaporeon is the only other pokemon that comes close to being able to stop Kingdra. However, Milotic and Vaporeon both suffere from "Blissey Syndrome". Basically, without heavy EV investment in defenses, they're very open to physical attacks, and lose a lot of function.

Perhaps an even bigger threat than Kingdra is Kabutops. With Swift Swim automatically doubling speed, Kabutops also gains access to Swords Dance, doubling that 361 attack in one turn. I have been racking my brain, but I simply can't find something that can switch into Kabutops safely besides Quagsire, and even that has a chance at being 2HKO'd. Kabutops OHKO's Hippowdon after a Swords Dance with Waterfall without rain support. Skarmory is OHKO'd in the rain, and Cresselia is 2HKO'd. Gliscor is obviously OHKO'd as well. Celebi is OHKO'd by X-Scissor, and Kabutops ALSO recieves STAB on Stone Edge, effectivly nerfing Gyarados and OHKOing Vaporeon.

I won't go into Ludicolo, since there is to much that it can do, especially with unlimited Rain.

On the other hand, Sun abusers have a much harder time. First of all, Chlorophyll users gain a magnified fire weakness, and don't recieve STAB on Fire. Fire pokemon benefiet from this, but don't recieve the doubled speed boost from Chlorophyll. This isn't to say that unlimited Sun may be broken, but it's not broken to the extent that unlimited rain is.
