We're making an EV tracker and need help!

Hey guys and gals!

Some people perhaps know our iPhone application called lukomon Pokédex. It's an extensive Pokédex app that offers information on all Pokémon (even Black/White ones), Locations and Items and we built some unique features like Collections (with which you can keep track of your caught Pokémon), external links on all profiles to Serebii, Smogon etc. and an IV calculator. However, we're not here to advertise our application; instead, we're looking for feedback. As Kombo Studio we will be supporting our apps forever with free updates and at this moment we're working on the third big update for lukomon. We will be introducing some cool new stuff with the most striking feature an EV tracker. But to be honest, we're not the biggest competitive battlers ourself and we don't have a lot experience with EV tracking and such. That's why we seek your help: we want to make the perfect EV tracker so your EV training will be much easier in the future!

I'll start with showing you our own mock-up. http://s3.amazonaws.com/satisfaction-production/s3_images/252106/ev_tool_idea.jpg (external link as it's a pretty big picture). Hopefully it's a bit clear ^_^. Now is our question to you: do you think it'll be easy to track EVs with the current mock-up interface? Are there things there need to be added? Please say anything that comes to mind because we love feedback in every form! :)

I also have three promo codes with which you can download the app for free. Have fun using it!

As far as I follow, the main page (maybe a title screen with logo would be nice) consists of the option to 'Edit' and the name of a Pokemon with a mini sprite next to it? The app will be able to save your roster of Pokemon (how many?) with the number of EVs each one has? Clicking on the Pokemon's name (or nickname) will bring you to the EV calculating tab. I'm guessing 'Done' will bring you back? What does 'Export' do?

As you probably know, different Pokemon give different EVs, but what and how many EVs is not always evident. Would it be possible, in addition to the set up you have now, to have an option to calculate the EVs based on the Pokemon you fight? So instead of doing (+1, +1) for defense, you input (Geodude) everytime you fight one (obviously fighting multiples of the same 'mon means you don't have to search for them in the drop down every time you defeat one).

It'd mean the app could also be used by people who want to keep track of EVs while playing through casually. "Let's see what my ev's are like after fighting 6 starly's, 3 bidoofs, and a budew...". Maybe this is stretching it a bit far programming-wise, but maybe even an option to select a route, or location you're currently in, which will bring up a list of all possible Pokemon, wild or trained, in that area which will reduce the need to go hunting for them in a list?

I haven't seen your previous apps (no iPhone) but what kind of theme or look are you planning to use? You can't really tell much from the sketch, but it's a little dry looking right now. Do you have any mock-ups concerning color schemes, fonts, or how the menus will look?

Hi Cartoons!, thanks so much for your suggestions! Awesome, we're really happy you took the time.

I'll start with showing you some pics of the app so you can get an idea of what the interface looks like:

You can find more high res screenshots at our apps section on our blog; http://www.kombostudio.nl/apps

The EV tracker will be part of the whole application, users can find it under the 'Tools' section (so there probably won't be a main page/splash screen). The feature will indeed save your roster, we're thinking about max 6 Pokémon (or perhaps unlimited, not yet decided). Export doesn't really do anything, this is kind of an old mock-up so we already removed that.

Calculating EVs based on the Pokémon you were fighting is an AWESOME idea! It's stupid we didn't think of that ourselves. It probably will be possible (we have to add the EVs a Pokémon gives to every Pokémon in the database), not sure if it will make it in the initial version though. However this is a really good suggestion, thanks a lot.

Regarding the option to select your current location; also a really good idea and it sure will be user-friendly. We have data on locations and which Pokémon you can find there, so in theory it should be possible to choose a location and scroll through a list of Pokémon found there. But as with the previous suggestion, we're not yet sure if this will make it into the initial version, or if it even will be coming later. We have to test it, but is sure sounds cool.

And about adding this to Art: well, this really was the only forum we could think of where people could give feedback on something like this. The other forums are much more about gameplay and tournaments so that's why we chose Art :-)

Thanks again for the feedback and keep it coming!

Sorry about the whole swearing at you thing, I didn't notice the images.

And I like the whole interface, it looks really slick.

Nice interface. It looks like it it will be a great app. I am doing to make sure I get get it when it comes out. Nice job I couldn't do it better myself

This isn't about the EV tracker part of the app, but you should include an abilities section. I have AAA Pokedex on my iPhone (sorry :P), but I noticed yours doesn't have an abilities section either. It really annoys me when you can't find, say, what Pokemon all have technician. Just an idea. And the EV tracker will greatly help too. If you can add those I will gladly switch to lukomon.

Thanks for your kind words guys, we really appreciate it. :-)

I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding; the EV tracker will be a free update for our lukomon app, which is already available in the App Store (and you can download it for free with the promo codes I gave in the first post!). At this moment we're working hard to complete this free update, lukomon 1.3, which will not only bring the EV tracker but some other cool stuff too. We're here to get feedback on the tracker so we can make it as perfect as it can be! :-D

@boyofrito, great suggestion! It isn't that hard to add it so you will probably see it in lukomon 1.3!

How do you plan on working the EV tracker? I mean, if you link the DS to the Ipod then you could just copy over the EV's straight from the game, without having to use a calculator.

Hi Chubbs,
haha that would be pretty cool but it's not possible. A Nintendo DS can only link with official accessoires or another DS, but not with any other gadget. That would have been very convenient though ;-)

Really? That sounds like a challenge to me. You probably could connect them together by splicing an iPod cable to a cable that attaches to a DS. How you would get it to transmit data I dont know.

You could also try an action replay with a variation of one of the ev training codes that writes the ev information to whatever happens to be plugged into the micro usb slot on the back of it.

Hey everyone, it's been a while but we're back with an actual working design, I'll show some pics:

There's just one more thing we need to add and that's the 'adding EVs by selecting a Pokémon'. We're just not really sure how to implement it; should there be an extra menu in the EV tracker where you can select said Pokémon, or would a button on a Pokémon's profile in the Pokédex saying 'send EV to tracker' be better? Remember, the EV tracker is part of the whole Pokédex so it's all in one app.

We think the second option is better. When you're going to battle a certain Pokémon, you would probably look-up its weaknesses in the Pokédex. While you're there, you can immediately add its EVs to the tracker. That way you won't even have to 'use' the tracker that much; you'll just be browsing through the Pokédex and occasionaly you can check your Pokémon's EVs in the tracker.

We hope you can give us some feedback on this matter. It's almost done! :-)

At least for me, the easiest way would be to set a location in game that you're battling, then have a list of pokemon that can be found on that route. You'd select the pokemon your fighting, which would send the correct ev's to the tracker. I can't see the pictures you posted (they come up as question marks), so I can't comment on the format.
