What is the hardest Video Game you have ever played?

FE7, on Hector's Hard Mode. I can do anything except that without losing a character but x_x ugh. I spent six months on chapter 21 because I had to reset everytime a wyvern rider killed Priscilla

Metal Slug 2 onwards. I recently bought the anthology for wii and got slapped completely. I don't see how anyone could possibly have ever won it for less than $15 if it was the original arcade version. I mean, to go with MS2 as an example, the (first?) boss, where it chases after you as you ascend the tower... I lack the ability to jump upwards, while shooting downwards, all the while avoiding its own attacks. Or how about any of last 2 stages on any of them, where enemies literally fill the screen and keep on coming until you move on, which you can't do because THEY FILL THE SCREEN IT'S IMPOSSIBLE ARGH.

I guess I take solace in that you get free continues on wii...

I haven't played very many difficult games, but Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 makes me want to tear every last hair out of my head. X_x So many of the chapters come down to nothing but luck, especially if you want to get a good ranking. The FE games released outside of Japan are quite tame compared to this one. I gave up on the last chapter because it frustrated me too much.

Oh, and the Lost Levels and the bonus levels of SMW drove me insane back when I used to play them...

Super Smash Brothers: Melee.

After 67 tries, i finally beat All-Star on Very Hard mode. I'm pretty good at the game, and even on off days i can beat Classic/Adventure VH without losing a stock, but dear christ. I dont know if its me, the no recovery, the game, or what.

That was hands down the most grueling moment of my life.

Ever try to beat Adventure/Classic/All Star without ever getting hit once? Even on very easy it is kinda hard b/c the CPU will get a lucky hit in somewhere. I beat Classic VE with Bowser.

lost levels wasn't a good game at all, you had to know that certain things were coming before you did them. thats the mark of bad level design

also lol at so many people saying SMW was even remotely hard

Hahaha if you want bad level design Mega Man X6 will give you a run for your money.

Also, it's not that SMW is hard, it's Tubular and Outrageous that were hard. The rest of the game was fairly easy.

Wow I am surprised at the number of replies I have gotten for this topic!

I find it silly that people use examples of games on their hard modes or when they name a level or 2 that were a lot harder than the rest of the game itself.

Frogger 2: Swampy's revenge.

F*** that game. Sure I played it when I was 8. I almost beat it too. Actualy I did but trying to get the unlockable characters made my cry 3 times. :..(

Monopoly for the Super Nintendo. Absolutely retardedly impossible to win.

Pokemon Puzzle League on v-hard mode. Mewtwo is nearly impossible. Took me 3'33 to bbeat him.

Yeah, I have that game, and the levels are awful. They ruined the Mega Man games after the NES days (although the original X was very good).

For more recent terrible level design, Perfect Dark Zero had to put green arrows on the floor to telling you where to go, because if you took other paths you would end up going in circles, or find yourself at a dead end.

Super Mario Bros 1

Reason: My dad gave me a Nintendo when I was about 10. I finished the game at the age of 16. I still hate the lvl 8 castle :pirate:

Edited:
Here are a list of the games I havent finished yet (I'm older than 20 now :P)
- Twin Bee (NES)
- Galaga (NES)
- Pac Man (NES)
- Friday 13th (NES)

is there an actual end to galaga and pacman

I thought both of these games were endless and only repeated levels at some points with faster enemies.

For me, Fire Emblems 5 and 6. The rest of the series is relatively easy, especially 7 and on since they've been dumbed down for North American players.

Otherwise I'd probably say Devil May Cry... well, at least trying to get an S rank. My timing is so shit-poor that I can never dodge attacks... I can pull off some amazing combos but eventually I just get raped and thus lose the potential to get an S rank.

To be frank, most games are pushovers on easy or medium mode, with a few notable exceptions.

exactly why the point is listing games that are really hard on the normal setting rather than on the "insane" difficulty setting.

Competitive Pokemon is really hard...D:

Good lord Pokemon Puzzle League for N64 was bullshit. There's no way I could remotely begin to challenge that on basic Hard mode, I'd always die about 10 times at least before the end. The harder mode(s) were just ridiculous rape.

Can't really think of any other difficult games that I couldn't beat or were particularly a pain in the ass...

TMNT for the NES. I hated that game. Granted I was never very good at video games anyway, but fuck that was tough.

I remember the first time I beat the dam level (all that underground swimming). I was fucking ELATED. Then I promptly died at the next part. In all, I think I got that far only twice.

The oldschool Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the NES. I never figured out how to get past the van level! AND the original Megaman on the NES, cannot beat that damn cyclops thingy at end stage.

Thegreenguy I think you are referring to the Shadow Devil IIRC...

Wow from looking at all 140+ replies to this topic, I think there is a general agreement on the following games being really hard (NOTE: This is defined as when you play the game at a normal setting and a majority of the game is difficult):

Contra
Super Ghouls and Ghosts
Mega Man X6
Ninja Gaiden
Battletoads
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)
F Zero GX

Any I am missing?

Twin Bee <3 That thing gets annoying after the fourth or fifth level though. And Galaga gets really dumb after level 20, my record is level 26 :(

Metal Slug games are generally hard when you don't know what is coming but when you do they become a piece of cake.

For me it was Baldur's Gate 2 : Throne of Baal. You had god like characters but the enemies were even more ridiculous. It took me 8 tries to win the last battle. Contra 3 definitely took parts of my sanity i will never get back.
