Yeeeaaaah... took me some 50 Revives and a ton more items. Basically I'd have Pachirisu go out and Flash and Discharge until the opponent was useless, then send out Staraptor to Double Team up and sweep. Roselia claimed a lot of kills via Leech Seed (including Garchomp), and gets special props for walling Lucario (who was one of the very few things Pachirisu couldn't tank, scarily enough). Chimchar gets props for OHKOing Lucian's Bronzong after 3 Nasty Plots, and Kricketune gets props for Perish Song. Staraptor had fun with Double Team wars (Aerial Ace ftw) and Endeavor (especially on Bertha's Hippowdon, which scared the heck out of me when I saw it come out). Bibarel was the only useless one in the lot. Moomoo Milk and Leppa Berries are our friends.

Before facing my Rival and the Elite, these were all at level 40.
 
I beat the game with Torterra, Luxray, Staraptor, Golduck with Chansey to heal stuff and to climb/smash/push rocks, and a Noctowl to cut and defog stuff. I think I carried a Steelix at one point.
At most times I usually carry around Staraptor(flying, killing), sometimes Golduck(surfing), a Slugma, a couple Dittos or something and maybe a Koffing just for the hell of it.
 
I beat my Pearl Version with:

Empoleon / Emperior
Staraptor / Sora
Luxray / Rentoraa
Gyarados / Gyarados
Palkia / Palkia
??? / ??? (Forgot. XD)

They were pretty awesome when I went through the Elite Four, crushed them with Emperior pretty soundly.

My in-game team now is:

Raichu / Selphie
Chatot / Mozart
Zigzagoon / Zigzagoon

I always have my Raichu with me, Mozart is used for flying, and Zigzagoon gets me past obstacles, such as bodies of water, the annoying trees that block your way and crap, and for its Pickup Ability.

Otherwise I just stalled with sandstorm and empoleon.

Yeah. I don't know how I ended up with a weird team like that either. Toxicroak was great when I first caught it as a Croagunk, but it slowly became more and more of a liability, so it's been boxed for ages. Maybe I should take another shot at raising one.
 
The team I used to sweep the Elite 4 was...

I danced him up, super effective against anything it was, neutral if i had to (figured out pp with weaknesses, planned each move to each enemy poke)... an used items to keep him truckin. If he could set up 3 swords dances (an he could!) it was pretty much a OHKO on every enemy :)

as for starter, I chose Piplup... I got a Chimchar from my friend, who traded it for a Shinx... ehehe
 
I know I had Infernape and Staraptor as my main two until I got a Gibite, obviously using Garchomp by the E4. Sure I had something else, can't mark out what it was.
 
prior to learning about smogn adn competitive pokemon in general, my team was

Torterra
Azelf
Rampardos (me and my brother called him senior rampardos, as we always rolled the R)
luxray (it used, thunder fang, I knew that much back then)
Palkia (OMG, Ubers)
Manaphy (I got ranger for christmas that year)

I know whay you all are thinking "WTF? No mantine?!?" Well I never really like mantyke that much until I decided my user name would corospond with him.

Chimchar tends to be the easiest to work with, as it gets a bunch of boosting moves and nice offensive moves and fast sweepers are good ingame to avoid boredom. Basically, I just used Chatot and Bibarel as HM slaves, stuck in 3 more random Pokemon, leveled up Infernape to about the 60's, and swept the E4 with Swords Dance/Close Combat/Flare Blitz/Flame Wheel...
 
I used my Ape starter and just beat the whole game with it. It was at lv. 85 when I beat every trainer in the game and E4 with it. >_>
