what was suppose to be an anti-weather team

How do you defeat the weather?

The morphing of this team from original concept to final team is quite a journey. Sit back put on some music and enjoy the ravings of a complete lunatic.

I wanted to create an-anti weather team. To do so I poured over hundreds of RTM’s to learn as much as I could about the weather teams and their possible weaknesses. I went into this exercise with the thought that I would carry 2 different weather parts and based on what was there bring up the correct weather. So I started with Lucario.

Based on most research he was listed the most has the biggest threat.
The team needed a lead that could do multiple weather introductions and stealth rock. Welcome to the party Bronzong.

453.png

The 2 weather conditions I choose were sunny day and rain dance these were choosen just to irritate any person who wanted to bring up any weather. So to take advantage of the weather I choose to bring in Lilligant beast in the sun and cleric benefits.

453.png
549.png

To take advantage of the rain I choose Kingdra with swiftswim.

I then wanted a pokemon that could do something with both Sun and Rain. I choose Dragonite with the most ridiculous move set ever. Heatwave, draco meteor, heatwave.

Then to round off the team I need some kind of tank (or at least that is what my son said) and I was inspired by the guy who made the rising sun team by using snolax. Descent wall with a few teeth.

And that was my anti-weather team and I had fun. The good news was I went with about 85% victories over weather teams. The bad news I went about 95% loses against normal teams. That said I went about 100 matches and thought it was just because I was a poor player that I was losing so much. I made multiple changes including replacing d-nite but the results were pretty much the same. Then my 16 year old son walked up behind me and laughed and called the whole thing a “gimmick”. I really hated that label. But I couldn’t get past the fact that he was right. My son has his team rate most of the time below 1000 and knows what he is doing dad picked this up to make sure everything was on the up and up and got hooked, but doesn’t know anything. The things I learned from running this team. One, I really liked how Snorlax worked, he kind of fit my style. Two, Lilligant had way more potential then I was giving her credit for and was putting my team in good places. Three, Bronzong is a great utility person to lead my team. Lastly, the rest of the guys were very good, but I didn’t know how to use them. When discussing this with my son he asked a very good question. “How about your anti-weather team be just 1 weather, but not necessarily be a weather team? “ “huh” “Well you like Snorlax and Lilligant and Bronzong, that is a very nice start of a Sunny Day team, but really doesn’t need the sun to be effective.” And he comes the thing I didn’t want to admit, but he was right. So here come the modifactions to the team, eliminate the other 3.

143.png

Now add ninetails as what sun team is a sun team without him.
442.png
549.png
143.png

I had best add a fire guy as nine tails is mostly a gimmick to bring out the sun. but also someone who could stand on his own. Here come infernape.
442.png
549.png

392.png

Now since I see 2 fires on the team I should add another chlorophyll guy, victreebel.

I started doing better, but I noticed 2 things, one I was way too dependent on Snorlax for dragon and other breakups, two Bronzong didn’t have enough teeth to stop some of the setups against me like the standard smergle or ninjask baton passers and I would get run over. To counter this I needed a stealth rocker who had an ice move and some teeth, along with heft as to not be OHKO’d before the stealth rock. So out came bronzong ad in came Omastar. He had everything I wanted and was a water with swift swim just in case of rain, still anti-weather.

Now I started winning at a better clip(not near what a really talented player wins at, but better), but I noticed that victreebel was nothing but dead weight, he helped less then 5% of the matches. I also noticed that omastar was kicking dragon butt amd snorlax wasn’t getting beaten upon as much. I was torn between roserade as another cleric, but I really wanted another chlorophyll guy. So I tired Sawsbuck.

Below are the stats on how the team is built and a few explanations. I am still not completely sold on Sawsbuck. That said I would love any help. Once again I am very new, this is my first post and I read the directions multiple times to make sure I did things right. I have about 300 battles with this team and a fairly good winning percentage.

Omastar @ Air Balloon
Ability: Shell Armor
EVs: 88 Def, 168 Special Attack , 252 Special Def (0 IV for speed)
Nature: Quiet
- Stealth Rock
- Ice Beam
- Surf
- Knock Off / Substitute
Omastar was the 2nd to last addition to the team and one of my biggest surprise. He has enough bulk to take hits and one of his major weaknesses is covered by the air ballon for at least 1 round. If I see a plant move coming I usually bring in Infernape, but outside of that I really like his set. I have decided to go with Knock Off over Sub as the sub generally serves very little purpose. Knock Off really ticks people off and makes pokemon like whimsicot a little more bearable. I did 0 IV speed and queit to reduce speed just incase I run into a trick room team. It has worked fairly well. Obviously he isn’t the slowest pokemon, but even against trick room teams he get about 50% go first during trick room. Omastar covers a lot of the weaknesses that the rest of the team has. I would say one of the MVP’s of the team.

Ninetails @ Focus Sash
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 Speed, 4 HP, 252 Special Attack
Nature: Timid
- Solar Beam
- Heat Wave
- Hypnosis
- Nasty Plot
I stole this idea from others, a guy “pele“ mentioned a “gimmick” of a lead of Persian and the first move being switcheroo then a sleep move then went into painstaking detail about how it work and that gave me the understanding of how the standard Ninetails can work. Thank you for explaining (I told I was new to this). That said the focus sash is just in case the first hypnosis doesn’t work. Then comes nasty plot or 2 (greed has cost me some matches), then the sweep begins. I was surprised how many times it actually worked. And bringing the Sun to play is the obvious synergy to the rest of the team.

Lilligant @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Speed, 4 HP, 252 Special Attack
Nature: Timid
- Armomatherapy
- Sleep Powder
- Healing Wish
- Solar Beam / Leaf Storm
I fully admit this is not my idea. I stole it from “Katakiri“ and made a few minor mods to it. I like armoathearpy because I don’t have to complete release her to help the rest of the team. Sleep Powder is negotiable, it allows her to still function without Sun, so that is why I keep it and this is my anti-weather team (ha ha). Solar Beam over Leaf Storm for me because I normally have Sun out making it a no brainer. She is in really more the 1 turn. Her healing wish give Snorlax and Infernape a second chance at running a team, along with the other.

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 80 Sp. Def, 156 HP, 88 Attack, 180 Def (0 IV Speed, 255 Happiness)
Nature: Brave
- Return
- Fire Punch
- Earthquake
- Crunch
A wall with teeth, I won’t say he is perfect, but he has taken tons of abuse and stood tall, and the beautiful Lilligant has repaired him a few times. Believe it or not if someone were to make a suggestion as to a move to add to him I would actually replace earthquake. That said he is the big brother that helps to save little sis Lilligant or Sawsbuck when I see fire or dragon coming. He is also there when I see water or earth coming at the fire boys. Heck he is out there a ton and his role has been reduced by Omastar. If Omastar is the MVP, Snorlax is the Hall of Fame. This guy has run through more teams by himself then I would have ever thought possible. Also I love trick roomers with this guy. The only thing slower than him that I know of off the top of my head is Reniculous. Let us just say bring on the sweep.

Infernape @ Choice Band
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Speed, 4 HP, 252 Attack
Nature: Jolly
- Close Combat
- Flare Blitz
- Gunk Shot
- Shadow Claw
The ape brings enough speed to the game and in the Sun and a STAB Flare Blitz he is a monster. I find myself using Close Combat more the I would like. Shadow claw for the occational Ghost. I don’t know why I used Gunk Shot. Can someone help with a better thought then that or explain why I would ever use it? There has to be something better. Once again I stole this from “Katakiri“ and did a little adjustment to make it my own. You have to give credit where credit is due.

Sawsbuck @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Speed, 4 HP, 252 Attack
Nature: Adamant
- Horn Leach
- Return
- Substitute
- Sword Dance
Remember when I said I didn’t see any use for sub on Omastar, here I have a very good one. If the sub stands 1 round, I do a sword dance until it falls and then run the team. Horn Leach give enough life back to replace the Life Orb minuses and he seems to have enough speed with the chlorophyll to run most teams. I see him as a poor man’s exadrill.

The threat List:
Outside of the normal list of weather changers and usual guys here are a couple that caught me off guard.

Wobbuffet : don't know what it is about him, but he gives me a rough time everytime I face him.

Forretress : same thing here

Dragonite : Even though i don't seem to be able to make him work he certainly does the job for others and makes my life hell.

Volcarona : even though she comes in at 50% she still give me a hard time.

And lastly Dugtrio: speed and ground give a fire team fits.

This bring me to the end of this RMT. You can see the mess that is my mind. Sorry if I am long winded. My goal is to be able to compete with my son without him being embarrassed by the lack of quality coming from his dad. Thank you in advance for any help, I know I need it as I am just barely starting to see how wonderfully complex this game can be and how it is like a Symphony each part playing in harmony to make each other better.

oh to answer the first question "How do you defeat the weather?"
"You make your own"

I looked over your team, and you need a steel type. Like, you NEED a steel type. You have nothing that resists dragon, and that's why dragonites are having their way with you. I'd recommend a standard forretress or ferrothorn to cover that, they would give your team good synergy and a wall to fall back on.

This team is pretty cool! However, I see in it an extremely huge and uncovered Fighting weakness. You have two pokemon that are weak to it (Sawsbuck, Snorlax), and 0 pokemon that resist it. Taking in account that Fighting is one of the most common attacking types in our current OU, this is really something YOU DON'T want. To make up for that weakness, I have a change you could do, while keeping good synergy with other members.

Change Sawsbuck for Venusaur

Venusaur is a pretty cool guy. It gets Chlorophyll and awesome stats. And guess what? It resists Fight, and most of its weaknesses are covered by other team members. Here's a pretty good set that would help you a lot :

Venusaur @ Life Orb / Modest / Chlorophyll / 4 HP - 252 SpA - 252 Spe
Energy Ball (Giga Drain is illegal with Chlorophyll) - Hidden Power Fire - Growth - Sleep Powder

Next, your team is pretty much destroyed by Sandstorm teams. Excadrill can OHKO your whole team with its basic set of EQ/Rock Slide/X-Scissor, and considering its popularity (and Tyranitar being the most popular OU pokemon), this is really a bad idea. What you should do is get rid of Omastar (or Lilligant if you like Stealth Rock) and get a Gliscor. Gliscor could really help this team with its weaknesses, resisting Fighting and being immune to Ground. Exca's coverage moves won't damage it a lot, and Gliscor can switch in it as many times as it want. Here's an awesome set for one of the best pokemon in the metagame :

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb / Jolly / Poison Heal / 252 HP - 40 Atk - 216 Spe
Earhquake - Facade - Swords Dance - Protect

Oh and I have minor nitpicks for some of your other pokemon :
Ninetales : Don't use Solarbeam. Ninetales calls Tyranitar and Politoed all day long, so you gotta use Energy Ball to smash them. If you want a good Fire move, Heat Wave is not your best bet seriously. It only has 5 base power more than Flamethrower, for a 10% accuracy drop. Considering Flamethrower has 100% acc., you better run it. You can also use Fire Blast, that only has 5% less acc. than Heat Wave, but an extra 20 power.

If you run 4 attacking moves on Snorlax, why not change its item to a Choice Band? The extra power would let it punch through the opponent's defenses with relative ease.

While Infernape can a a good Choice Bander, it's seriously better as a Mixed Attacker. With this, it can get past any walls without problem and probably sweep the opponent. However, if you wish to keep it in a Choice Banded version, I suggest you swap Shadow Claw for ThunderPunch, since they both hit Jellicent (Gengar is hitted harder by Flare Blitz), but ThunderPunch has the bonus to give you a deadly weapon against Gyarados. Instead of Gunk Shot, which has an extremely bad typing and accuracy, you should get Stone Edge. Stone Edge hits Chandelure for Super-Effective damage, as well as Dragon/Flying typed pokemon that aim at set-upping on you (Salamence and Dragonite). If you wish to go mixed, I suggest you this set :

Infernape @ Life Orb / Naive / Blaze / 40 Atk - 252 SpA - 216 Spe
Fire Blast - Close Combat - Nasty Plot - Grass Knot (DO NOT USE IT ON ROTOM-W!!!)

So that's it for my rate, hope I helped.

Steeli - you made my day. you have definitely hit the nail on the head. and As I said earlier Sawsbuck was one of my pokemon I was more then willing to replace. It also makes a ton of sense on how to use Venusaur. The Gliscor didn't make much sence, but with the poison heal (the protect) is to regain health, I am starting to get this. Replacing protect or SD with Stealth rock may give me the lead I need. I will also play with the Ape. Thank you very much.

One last thing, I am rated pretty low/high (the bad rating) and I am sure the sand teams will get better, but so far I really haven't had any problems with the sand teams I have come across.

Illegal moveset?

How can Ninetales have both Heat Wave and Hypnosis?

Both can be inherited, but not from the same parent.
I'd love someone to show me where I'm wrong, so I can use them together myself.

If you're not completely sold on Sawsbuck, then try this guy.

Venusaur @ Life Orb/Leftovers
Jolly Nature
Chlorophyll
4hp/252atk/252spd
-Sleep Powder
-Growth/Swords Dance
-Earthquake
-Seed Bomb

Trust me, this guy is great. Being functional in and outside of sun teams is a great thing. Sleep Powder allows for an easier set up of Growth/Swords Dance, and the other two moves provide great coverage.

Venusaur @ Life Orb/Leftovers
Jolly Nature
Chlorophyll
4hp/252atk/252spd
-Sleep Powder
-Growth/Swords Dance
-Earthquake
-Seed Bomb
It's pointless using Growth in the above set, as Swords Dance does what you want Growth to do, but without the dependance on Sunny Day.

If you are going to use Growth, swap Seed Bomb for Giga Drain which, considering Venusaur's Special Attack is 20 points higher than its Attack, will do similar damage and heal you at the same time.
