in the evening, when the sun is going down over the roof of the greek restaurant over the road, i like to sit out on the balcony, facing east, and watch the cars and the trams and the people go by on the high street down below, and feel the softening touch of the evening sun, the golden light.

and when the sun gets low enough, if it’s not cloudy, it’s reflected on the glass door behind me, a second sun, as blinding as the first. i’m encircled. then, that second sun is reflected again in the spiderwebbed glass of the balustrade and i can look out and see two suns in parallel, the reflected reflection a few centimetres to the left of the true sun and duller, just a little. once the sun gets to just the right position, the image on the balustrade glass reflects onto the door once more; the fourth sun, half-occluded by the railing, a reflection of a reflection of a reflection.

and it’s still so bright.

and i think that if i were to move over a little on the balcony, that fourth sun could even be seen reflected again, back on the balustrade, and on and on and on and on and on, until the sun touches the old tiles of that greek restaurant and vanishes into the sea.

how about you?
