What's Pokemon got that'll keep you playing in-game?

So this is the 4th generation, and there's almost nothing new added to main storyline... R/S are awesome because it had a great storyline, lots of dialogue to push it, and you had to fly to city to city. That was so great. But now it's like they just made the story lite and the way you play through the story/ to the E4. There's not really anywhere fun to go explore which kinda sucks.

The only thing that'll keep me playing is the wifi in this game... So nothing will keep me playing in-game, other than Battle Tower, which is somewhat cool and fun[and necesary for wifi].

What about you? Any of you dissapointed?

Perhaps its just me, but I'm really just totally confused by your complaint. What did R/S have that was so amazing compared to D/P?

Storyline-wise, it's the basic plot you've been through time and time again. Saving the world from takeover by a crime syndicate. But other than that, it just seems to revolutionize portable gaming. It's the first DS game to make use of the mic for chatting and it's got tons of new features. There's always something new and complex to look forward to - a revamped metagame, new contests and interactive events, no longer needing to rely solely on NetBattle for online competitive play (you now get to avoid downtime or immature low-lives since you choose who you wish to give out your ID to). They just build on things introduced in earlier games and give you plenty of options so you can try different things and not get bored. It's another mix of challenge and fun, which is why the series is a cash cow for Nintendo. The only fatal flaw I think, outside of the fact that most of the 4th generation seems to be plagued with morbidly obese monsters, is that it's difficult to trust people over the DS since programs like Pokémon Maker make cheating without being penalized very easy.

Plot wise it's the same one-trick pony, but being able to enrich the story and setting of the world of the game was greatly improved. Being able to interact and explore into more things, and even not quite know what's going on even if you read a guide on it. What combination of goodies will you find in the Underground, what's going to come out of Riolu's hair next, what does that Ditto-Clefairy know that I don't?

I get the awesomeness of balanced battle mechanics, but I also get a lot of other fun things to do that aren't even mundane if you can get an extra TM or hold item out of the deal.

Well after you're done with the story, there's Wi-fi and that battle tower with cheating AI/wi-fi teams.

That's 'enough' for me. I was never a fan of the games, anyway, so maybe my expectations aren't all that high.

The Wifi Battle Tower is really a great addition, that will keep me tied over along with regular BT and of course Wifi for a good while =D I'm content with DP, it's a great game.

I probably should explain better. eh.

The game is still fun, cause it's just like the others, but it got mundane and boring real fast. The only thing I do now is breed and train[didn't do that before cause I never got emerald]. But it seems like this game got stale really fast. Don't get me wrong, wifi battling is a blast, and I can't wait to get my team ready. But like i said, it just got really stale for me.

I guess my expectations were too high then? Possibly.

^Tournaments. Lots and lots of official tournaments. What's the point of doing all this EV, IV, and move work (or even knowing any of it) if it's not going to be recognized by officials. Sure, you get bragging rights on a few forums, but what's that worth.
Nintendo needs to set up a sweet tournament system and get it implemented soon so that people have a reason to be training their uberteams. They had those lame MLG Halo tournaments on USA a handful of months ago, why can't Nintendo set up official tournaments in the same way? They don't want to shell out the money? The money that will only make more sales because kids will be like "woah I want to play that sweet game that so many other people are playing".
/rant

Also, I almost stopped playing when that Galactic Grunt called me a noob early on. Putting gaming lingo into games is alright, but not THAT alright.

i think i hate the storyline part of the game. it really is the same as the other games, but somehow they made it easier. the dialouge is horrible and the encouter rate is just...well, you all know. team galaxy is really faggy, they make team rocket look like the taliban. level 50 wurmple go!! i'm just rushing to get through the e4.

Again, my question is what's really different that disappoints you so much. The story generally has a lot more depth than Ruby or Sapphire (neither told their story well, Emerald finally put it right) and there's just as many, if not more places to visit and activities to take part in after the E4 than any other Pokemon games. Ruby and Sapphire in particular were terribly disappointing in the endgame department. Very few new areas to explore and essentially no high level areas to train your Pokemon in.

In D/P I'm done with the E4, but there's still lots to do. I just got done hunting Mespirit/Cresselia and now I'm looking at going through routes 225-230 and exploring Stark Mountain. After that I've got to go through the Giratina quest, and the snow temple to get Regigigas. Once that's done, I can focus on breeding/raising up WiFi teams, take part in the battle tower, Super Contests, play around in the Underground, and maybe even try to complete the Pokedex. Earning your black card seems like an unbelievable task, but I'm tempted to try.

I guess I'm not sure what you were expecting. Likely your expectations were too high, but I'm really not sure what's lacking, especially compared to Ruby/Sapphire.

I play because I love pokemon. Sure the storyline is repetitive, but the perfectionist in me loves to breed the pokemon for those perfect ones and stuff like that.

hmm... really, what I really wanted them to add (which a friend pointed out) was the refighting the gym leaders. That was an awesome addition to Emerald, and it made it even better. That's the only thing I wish they would've added to DP.

The fact that at any time (wifi area =P) you can just pick it up and if your lucky one of your friends will be on and you can just B.S over voice chat and battle, its moved Pokemon up into a whole new sociality level because almost if not everybody in my Pal pad is over 16 lol.

Wi-Fi and Battle Tower. Really, the third game needs to reinstate the Battle Frontier except have something like Global Rankings for it. I breed specifically for the Battle Frontier in Emerald, without hope of a competitive metagame. I'm looking fowards to Wi Fi a ton because I've been speculating on the DP metagame for a long time.

Well, Nintendo took their hand and tried different story lines with Colosseum and XD, and we all know they didn't turn out as popular as the portable series (of course the flaws in the those games could have easily been fixed).

What did R/S do that D/P doesn't do better? Worse graphics, lame contests, meh plotline?

I actually enjoyed the Galactic plotline more then any other Pokemon plotline ever, just because it was so involved. The game pretty much shifts from "gotta catch'em all" to "gotta save the world" around the last few Gym Badges. The best part is, Team Galactic had more of a cause then "exploit Pokemon for profit!", and it was much better explained then Team Aqua/Magma explained theirs. We know the Boss, Cyrus, was an emo little kid who was born in Sunyshore. We know that the Grunts are clueless how the boss is planning to make a new world. And we find all this out little by little throughout the game, not in a big blast of dialog. The only thing that wasn't outlined much was how Team Galactic got so rich.

What do we know about Team Magma? A Grunt joined because "it's my dream to have a big house!".

Simply put, I found the storyline to be more intriging then even the new Pokemon at first x) The lingo was kind of awkward though. I met a fisher near Canalave City who said something along the lines of "Fishing for the win!", and I can't even count how many times I've been called a noob by an Ace Trainer or Galactic Grunt.

Then when you tie all that awesome plotline/graphics/mini-games together with WiFi, we have an awesome game. Super Contests currently are keeping me busy. I will beat Mom and her precious Glameow, one of these days e_e

It's the addition of online features for me. I used to play quite heavily back in the days of RBYGS but with the ADV games coming out while in college. I've always loved the games and TCG but previous time constraints and no transportation put a damper in what I was able to do.
