be it cd stores, websites, friends

i'm primarily interested in the second; let's get some sharing going!

great site with ddls and album reviews, have yet to browse it extensively but it's undoubtedly really cool - frostclick

i browse my friends's blog from time to time and i hope it's not too obnoxious to post it here because it's got some great stuff! - sunny cellars

good lad animenagai gave me this youtube channel and my word there is so much hip hop here and i'm surprised i've only ever heard about a fraction of these names. a great underground scene to explore - youtube channel

the rest of the time i get stuff from chatting with my friends and various other areas of life

btw, this isn't a thread about where you DOWNLOAD your music, we don't need that

I get a lot of mine through Facebook, which is actually a great tool for keeping up with music. After liking a shitload of blogs pages, as well as individual artists pages and various other music pages, my news feed just becomes a stream of new music and remixes, all of which are coming from artists similar to my current taste. Its like my own, better, Hype Machine (lol)

Gonna check out that youtube channel later, more hiphop yes please

spotify is great for discovering new music. If your facebook friends are also listening on spotify, you can see what each of them are listening to! Plus you can send songs through spotify to your friend's spotify inbox, making sharing music really easy. There's also a bunch of other cool features that lets you stumble across great songs.

I'm with Pocket, I use Spotify and my friends to find the music I listen too

if there are any pretentious music schools near you, they usually put on lots of free concerts that play all sorts of (often obscure) stuff.

for metal, I know a few users on rateyourmusic.com with some pretty comprehensive lists, especially of death metal. I've gotten hundreds of albums from those lists. Everything else I usually get based off of recommendations from people I know, or youtube if I happen to come across something that interests me. blogspot is great for discovering new music too but I don't actually use that.

Friends, music trackers, last.fm.

When I began to use the internet at ages 10-11, I had dial-up and my friends sent me anime openings/endings over MSN (very slowly). Then, when I was 12, a friend sent me The Arcade Fire - Funeral, and this changed my music taste irrevocably; as you'll see from the Top 10 Albums thread, it's my favourite album. Over the years I found music just from browsing music blogs at random and downloading stuff with intriguing names/covers/lyrics, as well as music I saw my friends listened to; I found a number of artists through googling people's MSN messages and finding they were lyrics. I became a member of the tracker OiNK's Pink Palace (RIP) and later on joined some others, which allowed me to find a great amount of amazing music through tags, collages, staff picks, etc. Friends recommend me music often, and I also find music through Last.fm's similar artists and recommendation functions, not to mention browsing friends' charts. For reference, here's my Last.fm :)

There are other sites like Last.fm, but I really prefer Last.fm for its functionality and the social experience it offers. While you can directly share recommendations with other users, I never bother with that; it's still a great way to see what your friends are listening to, to meet other fans of your favourite artists, to discover new acts, to find concerts and see if anyone you know is attending, etc. I love seeing other people's listening histories as well. I have a lot of Smogoners added, but please feel free to add me if I don't already have you; I'd love to spy on some more users. :3

Friends, Facebook, lurking you tube for hours on end, radio etc etc.

but http://www.birp.fm/ is a really good website if you are fan of indie/acoustic/chill/alternative electro and heaps of other stuff, especially if you are feeling a bit deprived of new music, because their monthly playlists and mixtapes always have a few/lots of gems, and I have found many of my favorite bands from them. Their blog is also really cool.

you guys remember outloud.fm? I really really really liked it in terms of sharing music, found a website similar to it after discovering outloud is now defunct
plug.dj (this is a room I created)
sadly, it isn't as good as outloud.fm... you can't drag music from your computer but can still share through soundcloud and even youtube and both services are just as good. it is a bit weird, since you have to set up a playlist and play music off there

Pandora, sometimes Spotify, a few sites that give out free music, etc. The best source for me has been random pawn shops and friend recommendations.

I usually find my music from friends, last.fm, earmilk, and tumblr. Last.fm has been really helpful in making music recommendations. Friends here have been great too, linking songs and sharing artists that I wouldn't normally have listened to or have even heard of. Earmilk.com is good too, giving a sample song to get a feel of what the band is like. Tumblr is cool too since blogs will often post music, and you get to try out new things and see what people you're following like.

besides the usual what.cd/waffles/last.fm, i find a lot of good music in sharethreads on /mu/ and musikchan. i've also found a ton of stuff through music sharing/listening sessions with smogoners (we have a lot of them on irc, in case anyone itt is interested)

I honestly don't search out new music like I used to, but when I do, it's from friends/through what.cd. When I was in college, I used to spend hours on audiogalaxy downloading the shit out of bands I had never heard of just because they were a similar artist. I miss doing that.

poppy you are the fucking man

bob42 is probably the best place to search for new music since he uploads like 40 things per month or so. im surprised other people knew about him, mad love! i highly recommend his channel if you're into underground hip-hop or the occasional nujabes-feel type of music to chill.

Most of mine is done through Spotify - I have a rather large list of artists I need to listen to more and Spotify is by far the easiest way of doing that.

i have a sort of unconscious process in which i download music, usually.
i almost always start at /mu/. Lurk sharethreads and etc. and download shit that looks cool. next steps are. lurk more and see if people compare new artists to artists i already enjoy. between this step and the next step is: discover more music by the artists i discovered. GO to rym and check out their ratings. Pretty much download everything that is 3.3 or higher, but mainly just looking for comparisons inside discographys. for actually acquiring these albums, i use what.cd

this process was more prevalent and open minded months ago, as now i pretty much just lurk hip hop related threads, when months ago it was more mixed. but if i can find more music that sounds like shit i already love I will. usually open minded about personal suggestions, not so much about downloading random shit
