who is the biggest mothim fan

Oh my goodness I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE.

Dw, I'm not gonna steal your crown. I'm just happy someone else gets it.

You know what? Mothim’s actually pretty cool, I’ll give you guys that. I never cared too much for Burmy or either of its evolutions mainly on account of Honey Trees being something I never really cared for. As an earlygame Bug-Type that helps add flavor to the Pokémon world, they’re decent little critters that insect lovers can get a kick out of, but Wormadam specifically always felt like sort of an afterthought compared to the other, more prominent Bug-Types that came out around this time.

At first glance, Mothim seems more of the same, especially when you consider that there are a handful of other moth Pokémon from other regions. The difference that sets Mothim apart from those usual fan favorites is that I feel like it does the most with the concept naturally while still maintaining the simplistic charm that I respect from Kanto’s Venonat line. It’s not like Volcarona or Frosmoth, trying to feel too much like a refined version of a classic RPG trope with an elemental spin tacked on for good measure. Mothim feels just unique enough to have its own identity as a Pokémon within a crowded typing combination while biologically complementing Wormadam well both in its more offensive stat spread and its design and appearance. This feels like something the creator of the franchise may have found in real life one day amidst his bug collection hobbies, and I just think he’s a neat little guy, really. Not everything needs to be this competitively viable, “I can do anything” style of design the newer generations are becoming increasingly guilty of. Flavorful additions that add to the game world are just as, if not more appealing to me in a rapidly aging multimedia franchise that’s dying for some much needed simplicity and structure at this point.

I'm not a mothim fan but I am big. Does that count for anything?
I meant for this to be a single post, but I’d say that would count, yeah

Edit: It is now one post

Mothim is like the grape juice of bug Pokemon. I know its a weird comparison but its so unique and still enjoyable among such crowded competition. Sure you may not remember it always but its flavor is instantly recognizable.

Here are all of Mothim’s sprites and models from over the years, at least in the games that it does appear in. Which ones are your favorites? (Let’s ignore the part where the 3D model was never actually updated)

please interrogate the reasons why you are not a mothim fan. perhaps it is because you hold internal biases that impact your ability to appreciate a pokemon that doesnt conform to typical standards of beauty or cutness or coolness as typically popular pokemon do. Mothim, while exclusively presenting as male, is soft, feminine, and subversive. His cry is elegant, cute, and unconventional. He is perfect. Perfectly imperfect. We love him. Do you?

WOAH WOAH WOAH my friend, Wormadam is no afterthought. Womadam is modeled after the bagworm moth, a species of moth whose larvae stage contructs little "cases" (the bag) made out of various organic materials. sometimes these materials are plant matter, rocks and shit, or even trash which explain the different forms of Burmy (and subsequently Wormadam). These cases eventually become its cocoon during the pupa stage. If the bagworm is male, it becomes the moth form of the bagworm and if the bagworm is female, it remains permanently encased in its "bag."

Mothim and its various other evolutions differ from Frosmoth, Venonat, and Volcarona in that those moths are based on other moth specieis. If anything, as you said, the difference in all these moths speaks to the flavorful impact of the Mothim line and add to the range of biodiversity observed in the pokemon world which quite artfully reflects the real worldl to a much smaller extent. I agree with you though, not all pokemon need to be competitively viable to be great pokemon, in fact its the simpler additions like these that make the experience of pokemon so enjoyable. with that being said, have you tried choice band mothim? its the real deal my friend

Truth be told, when I said this Pokémon felt like an afterthought, that was actually a reference to how Wormadam’s Sandy Cloak and Trash Cloak forms are the very last Pokémon that were added to the Gen 4 games. That wasn’t me rage baiting or anything. It’s similar to what happened with Chimecho being the last Gen 3 Pokémon, and both of these examples can be found in the index number listenings for their respective generations. My point is, originally it was just the Plant Cloak that was Wormadam’s only form, hence “Wormadam feels like an afterthought”. The Pokémon is decent, but I slightly prefer Mothim over it anyway.

Now that I’ve gotten a chance to have my “Erm, actually” moment, I can focus on the rest of your post. All jokes aside, I did enjoy reading this, and for a while I had not even known what Burmy and Wormadam were supposed to be. My first memory of Mothim, like several others, was when I saw it in the wild in Pokémon Ranger, specifically the third game since I can’t remember where it actually appears in the second one off the top of my head. Shadows of Almia has (almost) every Sinnoh Pokémon in it, which is to be expected, but Burmy’s female evolution into Wormadam helped teach me a lot about how the different species of moth actually live and function, if that makes sense. One thing Wormadam does have going over Mothim aside from the design aspect of it and Burmy is that of its typing and stats, which help set it apart from other Honey Tree staples. Mothim I would give a slightly higher grade overall, but Wormadam is still a decent 7/10 overall for me even if I didn’t know about it for the longest time.

THE 2D SPRITES ARE FANTASTIC but the best one by far is this one:

My Pokémon Ranch/Pokémon Rumble models in the big 2025 is absolutely elite ball knowledge, those games were peak especially on the 3DS (come to think of it, I think Rumble Blast was actually my first time seeing Wormadam in any capacity since only Burmy appears in PokéPark and I never bothered with the Honey Trees.)

. with that being said, have you tried choice band mothim? its the real deal my friend

Choice Band

Wormadam’s BF (Mothim) (M) @ Choice Band
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Return
- Facade
- U-turn
- Toxic

Mothim is a viable alternative to other Choice Band Pokémon in the tier. Return is your main attacking move, dealing strong neutral damage to most Pokémon. Facade is a secondary attacking option that can punish Mothim’s checks for attempting to cripple him with status, hitting slightly harder than Return if Mothim has a non-Burn status condition. U-Turn serves as a powerful STAB option that also allows Mothim to support its teammates by allowing them safe entry into battle on account of Mothim’s below-average Speed. Toxic is the last move on this set, allowing Mothim to attempt to cripple physical walls that may attempt to come in and force Mothim out.

The chosen EV spread and nature maximize Mothim’s ability to take at least one hit before switching out or attacking. 248 HP EVs and 8 Sp. Def. EVs allows Mothim to survive certain special attacks from Pokémon that usually have a higher Sp. Def. than physical Defense.

Usage Tips

Choice Band go brrr

Team Options

Mothim has strong synergy with other moth Pokémon.

Checks and Counters

Mothim has no true checks or counters in standard play, as it is an objectively perfect Pokémon with no flaws.
