Goes without saying, but answer on the assumption that you are playing a Mario spinoff where characters are mostly identical and where most recurring Mario spinoff characters that you'd realistically expect to be present are present. No meta considerations like character strength or playstyle or whatever else.

I used to be a Yoshi main when I was a kid+teenager (though ngl I've always been a bit of a tryhard lol; if a character was strong, I'd typically default to them, and my friend circles tended to be like-minded enough to encourage that), but for the past six or seven years, I've basically always picked Peach.

This depend on the specific game for me. I know in Mario Kart 7 I started running with Lakitu, and in the other Mario Karts I either play whoever is meta or whoever is the most fun depending on what I’m actually practicing. For Mario Party, I tend to play as Yoshi the most whenever me and my high school friends would play on rare occasions, and in Smash Bros. (I consider Smash to be a spin-off of everything by technicality), I play Pikachu in Brawl and Smash 4, Falco and Dedede in Brawl hehe chaingrab go brrr, and Pichu my beloved in Ultimate.
 
I mostly rotate between Koopa Troopa, Shy Guy, Toad and Yoshi. However, I do experiment with more exotic options when they become available like Blooper on Mario Party 8 and Mario Tennis Aces, as well as Piranha Plant and Animal Crossing Villager on Smash Bros Ultimate if that counts.
 
Mario Party: Yoshi predominantly as a kid, shifted to Boo later on. Birdo/Bowser are the GOATs for the newer ones.

Mario Kart: Bowser in pretty much every game

Mario Strikers Charged: Wario bc his special is sooo good

Don’t play the other Sport spin-offs enough to care
