Why do you think...

That even though Hypnosis (Psychic) works on Dark types, which have a Psychic immunity..

And Confuse Ray (Ghost) works on Normal types, which have a Ghost immunity..

Thunder Wave doesn't work on Ground types.

All three are non-attacking, status moves, so why can Hypnosis and Confuse Ray completely ignore their types while Thunder Wave cannot?

Any ideas?

Edit: Also, TheMantyke reminded me that Will-o-Wisp is like that too (sort of) because it gets absorbed by Flash Fire as though it were an attack.

Yes, I realize that "it was programmed that way" but I was wondering if people thought it was arbitrary or if there was some underlying reason for why you think they chose to do that.

This game sucks, that's why
Sucks? Yeah, sort of. At the very least it doesn't make sense sometimes.

Imagine the moves as they are real. Thunderwave is actually an electric attack that does no damage, but paralyzes.

Hypnosis isn't necessarily psychic in properties, but is classified that way.

Edit: Think about it. Rest is a psychic move, but what exactly about it is psychic? That it recovers damage? Well Recover is a normal attack. Certain move's are just classified differently.

The animation shows it as such, though, doesn't it? I think it was a pulse-type animation.

(I play with the battle animations off, so I don't really remember.)

I understand what he's saying as far as the "if Pokemon were real/realistic" perspective, it makes a bit of sense.

So, as far as gameplay goes, is there a reason? Did they think it would be too broken to be able to paralyze ground types or something?

Yeah, I guess so lol, since Thunder Wave is still a thunder strike (just a weak one). And you can still paralyze ground types with Body Slam (lol Snorlax).

Noooo it's (lol Togekiss) with the power of Serene Grace hax.

That's true, Body Slam. Then it doesn't follow even MORE.
Like it's understandable that: Toxic/Poison Powder/whatever doesn't work on Steels because Steels cannot be poisoned. Ever. And it's understandable that Will-o-wisp doesn't work on Fire types, because Fire types cannot be burned. Ever.

Now Thunder Wave seems like even more of an oddball, considering I forgot that grounds CAN get paralyzed by other moves.

Yeah lol, maybe we'll see some changes in Generation 5 (if that even happens).

Also, can you Synchronize Legendaries in Emerald (Rayquaza -.-)

EDIT: Yeah, but paralysis is still paralysis.

Nope, no Synchronizing legendaries.

That's the point Taylorz.

Why should a Ground type not be affected by Thunderwave, when say, Mightyena (Dark) IS affected by Hypnosis (Psychic)?

We can debate the logical side of this all day, or we can just accept the simplest answer, which incidentally is likely to be correct: these things happen because they do.
