Dear liquidrelief,
You are Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Holy shit this is based, great choice. Godspeed You! Black Emperor is an anti-capitalist, anarchist collective of politically active musicians that has as a project been around since 1994. Owing to their structure as a collective, the group espouses hierarchy internally, likely resulting in attracting the types of musicians that hold great political views. They were also misconstrued as terrorists, correctly speaking about the topic and that their pleasant treatment by the FBI and police was pretty much just because they were white middle class Canadians.
[Passive 1: Mega-Collective]
This article was a great choice by you and I can only apologise for phoning it in on this one. Someone had to get this role in a 20-role game, and it does fit your flavour. But now that I am (very late on, because this was an article I had no frame of reference for) reading this, I could have probably come up with something way cooler with more time and energy.
As a mega-collective, the members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor change frequently. And with an actively maintained non-hierarchical structure, newcomers to the group will be valued as equally as everyone else. You will recruit the first player in this game to die to your collective and, as a result, adopt all of their abilities, including their Passive 1. Essentially, you’re a backup of the first role that dies.
[Passive 2: Redistributive Wealth]
Listen, it’s not your fault the world works this way, it’s just how it is. You got born with the wealth, so more wealth is simply your birthright, right? Sure, the proletariat might be allowed to get degrees now, but they work for you, so their knowledge is basically your knowledge.
If a player targets you with an ability you have learned the name of via Active 1: Landlord, or that you have witnessed them using via Active 2: Credit Check, you will receive a one-shot use of this ability.
[Active 1: Landlord]
There’s nothing wrong with housing being privatised, trust. Like yeah, the right to shelter is protected by the UN, but that’s the Government’s problem. If people don’t want to pay up, they can find somewhere else to live. Your properties are yours, that’s why you build em, or buy em from other people who already built em, pretty much the same thing. Makes the world go round, etc. etc..
At night you may target a player with “Buy [PLAYER1]’s House”. You will become PLAYER1’s landlord, and thus it’s only fair that you now surveille their property. Because, y’know, what if they get a pet? You charge extra for that. As a result of this surveillance, you will learn the identities of anyone who visits PLAYER1 tonight.
[Active 2: Credit Check]
Money can be used in two ways. It can be used to buy stuff, and it can also be used to sell stuff. Or, I mean, in the case of being a landlord, people aren’t really buying anything from you, they’re just forced to give you money or you’ll make them homeless. It’s more like blackmail, really. Uhhh but your role’s designed in a your first Active ability is the “buy” component and this one’s the “sell” component, so we’ll ignore that.
At night you may target a player with “Credit Check [PLAYER1]”. PLAYER1, having come to you for a mortgage, has also obviously given you permission to investigate them a little bit. As a result, you will learn the name of one of PLAYER1’s Active abilities, determined at random. Furthermore, if the ability is currently locked, you will learn its unlock condition.
You are Town. You win when all mafia are dead.
