- Xerneas is arguably the best setup sweeper in National Dex Ubers thanks to its varied coverage options, solid stat spread, great ability, and Geomancy.
- Thunderbolt should be ran with Tera Electric and provides coverage for Ho-Oh as well as dealing good damage to Steel-types like Necrozma-DM and Zacian-C, although if Ho-Oh is a particular issue Hidden Power Rock can be opted for instead to specifically target it, as it allows Xerneas to OHKO Ho-Oh without Tera. Thunder is another viable option, OHKOing Ho-Oh and Necrozma-DM with minimal chip damage, but its accuracy means that Tera Electric Thunderbolt is more consistent.
- Substitute blocks status that are crippling to it like bad poisoning from Toxic and paralysis from Thunder Wave and Glare and allows it to tank hits from Pokemon like Chansey's Seismic Toss and stop status like. Focus Blast can be opted for to target Pokemon like Primal Groudon and Ferrothorn that can resist most of Xerneas's hits and is extremely important to run if Xerneas is running Hidden Power Rock if not running Electric-type coverage.
- The given HP EVs allows Xerneas to create a 101 HP Substitute which help against Chansey and Blissey's Seismic Toss, while the speed EVs allows it to outspeed Marshadow after Sticky Web or Rock Tomb, with the rest being invested into giving Xerneas max Special Attack and making it as physically bulky as possible. An alternative EV spread of 168 Def / 252 SpA / 88 Spe can be opted for instead, giving more physical bulk if Xerneas is not running Substitute, helping it have an easier time to set up against physical attackers like Zygarde-C and Marshadow.
- Tera Electric can be ran to boost the power of Thunderbolt, allowing Xerneas to reach key damage thresholds like confirming a OHKO on Ho-Oh, while also providing a nifty Steel-type resistance, allowing it to tank a hit against Necrozma-DM and Zacian-C as well as giving Xerneas an immunity to Glare from Zygarde. Tera Fighting is to boost the power of Focus Blast, letting it OHKO Defensive Primal Groudon after Stealth Rock and 2HKO Necrozma-DM while removing all of its weaknesses, or Tera Stellar to give Xerneas a one time boost on any of its moves, letting it achieve OHKOs on Defensive Eternatus with Moonblast and Ho-Oh with Hidden Power Rok.
- Xerneas should typically be saved until the endgame to act as best of a sweeper it can be and allow its checks like Ho-Oh and Primal Groudon to be chipped down. Attempting to take on Pokemon like Necrozma-DM and Ho-Oh on its own is not advised as both of these Pokemon have favorable typings against Xerneas.
- Xerneas fits on a variety of teams, from hyper offense to bulkier balance structures, primarily acting as a cleaner but also operating as a mid-game wallbreaker on some offensive structures.
- Xerneas oftentimes can struggle with Pokemon that resist Moonblast like Ho-Oh, Primal Groudon, and Necrozma-DM, so Pokemon who take these threats on like Zygarde-C and Arceus-Ground can make excellent partners. Calm Mind Primal Kyogre also makes an excellent teammate, as it directly forces out and OHKOes Primal Groudon, which is Xerneas's most common check.
- Entry hazards from the likes of Deoxys-S and Ferrothorn, with Knock Off support from Pokemon like Yveltal can chip away at Xerneas's checks like Primal Groudon and Ho-Oh, making it a much more threatening setup sweeper.
