VGC 21 Xerneas

[OVERVIEW]

An amazing move in Geomancy combined with Fairy Aura to boost the power of its STAB moves even further allows Xerneas to be a very dangerous setup sweeper in the format. It also has a decent offensive and defensive typing and all-around good stats, notably having a Speed tier that allows it to outpace a huge portion of the metagame. This means that after a Geomancy, Xerneas can outspeed Pokemon such as Urshifu-S and Kyogre even in Tailwind and Calyrex-S outside of it. However, Xerneas requires a good amount of support to set up Geomancy, such as redirection from the likes of Indeedee-F and Amoonguss. In addition, Xerneas suffers from a lack of coverage options, leaving it vulnerable to the plethora of Dynamaxed Steel-types in the format such as Assault Vest Kartana, Solgaleo, and Necrozma-DM.

[SET]
name: Geomancy
move 1: Moonblast / Dazzling Gleam
move 2: Dazzling Gleam / Thunder / Flash Cannon
move 3: Geomancy
move 4: Protect
item: Power Herb
ability: Fairy Aura
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Moonblast boosted by Fairy Aura after a Geomancy hits extremely hard, especially while Dynamaxed. Dazzling Gleam is weaker but allows Xerneas to do spread damage while still having the same Base Power when Dynamaxed.

* Dazzling Gleam can also be run in the second slot alongside Moonblast, as Xerneas has very few coverage options, and being able to choose between a spread move and a strong single target move can be helpful. Fairy Aura's power boost can justify running two Fairy-type moves even further. Alternatively, Thunder allows Xerneas to deal more damage to Kyogre and Ho-Oh while hitting the aforementioned Steel-types for neutral damage, and Flash Cannon boosts Defense when Dynamaxed while still hitting Zacian-C neutrally.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Grass Knot can be used to hit Kyogre and Groudon. However, it is not recommended, as it leaves Xerneas more vulnerable to Steel-types and a Fairy-type move is usually enough. It is also completely ineffective against a Dynamaxed Pokemon. Psyshock can also be run to hit Amoonguss. Focus Blast can hit Kartana but has shaky accuracy and is terrible when Dynamaxed.

However, Xerneas requires a good amount of support to set up Geomancy, such as redirecton from the likes of Indeedee-F and Amoonguss. In addition, Xerneas suffers from a lack of coverage options, leaving it vulnerable to the plethora of Steel-types in the format such as Zacian-C, Assault Vest Kartana, Solgaleo and Necrozma-DM. (Cut this down to three mentions, which you one drop is up to you. Maybe you can drop Zacian-C and make a point about Dynamaxed steels?)

[SET]
name: Geomancy
move 1: Geomancy
move 2: Moonblast / Dazzling Gleam
move 3: Dazzling Gleam / Thunder / Flash Cannon (switch this order such that Geomancy is in slot 3. Even though it is important, for VGC analyses we are always putting attacks first. If the player times out in game this is so they'll select an attack instead of a nondamaging move)
move 4: Protect
item: Power Herb
ability: Fairy Aura
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

* Geomancy doubles Xerneas's Special Attack, Special Defense and speed, turning Xerneas into a massive threat. (To be honest with you, I'm on the fence about whether or not this really needs to be mentioned. This statement itself is pretty much just saying literally what Geomancy does and you do a great job explaining this in the overview)

* Moonblast boosted by Fairy Aura after a Geomancy hits extremely hard, especially while Dynamaxed. Dazzling Gleam is weaker but allows Xerneas to do spread damage, while still having the same base power when Dynamaxed.

Alternatively, Thunder allows Xerneas to deal more damage to Kyogre and Ho-oOh while hitting the aforementioned Steel-types for neutral damage, and Flash Cannon boosts Defense when Dynamaxed while still hitting Zacian-C neutrally.

* Power Herb is mandatory as Geomancy is a two turn move.

After Geomancy, Caly-S is doing less as well) and Kyogre even in tailwind. Grass Knot could be used is an option to hit Kyogre and Groudon. ("This could be used" is probably not right.)
