Still, this gen 5 team preview and all these gay Pokemon around is seriously getting on my nerves. Landorus and his band of (BAN ME PLEASE)s, Genesect BS, Lati twins, Deoxys and mew...what was Smogon thinking? Now that the metagame's (BAN ME PLEASE)ry has been accomplished, you're forced to do 1 of 3 things or risk getting raped by all the gay stuff that's been running rampart in Gen 5.
1. Run weather (Rain always tops leaderboards, it takes no skill at all, and it's pretty autopilot)
2. Run Tyranitar (Choice Pursuit checks all of the top threats pretty well)
3. Gtfo (I would if I didn't love this game)
Anyways, it's pretty annoying how all these things aren't limited/banned/whatever. The whole ubers in OU thing is a complete mess, and i'm really not cheap enough to use all that lame stuff. I would much rather peak at #1 without em, but hey. What can I say. The metagame's changed for the worse, and it favors cheap shit.
Now enough of the rant, let me explain what the title means. Virtually every team that you're going to play in OU runs at minimum 1 steel type Pokemon. The most common steels that are ran include Skarmory, Ferrothorn, Bronzong, Scizor, and Jirachi especially. Steels are super good now because they wall dragon moves to the max, resist everything but fire pretty much, and assist in setting up the team and status flinging/ dropping hazards. Well, I decided to say F steels and ran Magnezone. Zone really wasn't great at all in Gen. 4, but in Gen. 5, he may be the one to actually break the format. I didn't want to release it out there yet (as it isn't too popular) but team preview's really gay, and I actually need some critiquing (since Stathakis is being gay and not replying to my wall posts or texts ;_;). Anyways, on with the team.
Azelf @ Focus Sash
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -SDef)
- Thunder
- Psychic
- Stealth Rock
- Flamethrower
Azelf is the standard Gen. 4 lead that had everyone going nuts. In Gen. 5, it doesn't really need much. I run Thunder over Explosion to one shot certain Politoad varient leads in Rain. The one shot wins the game as rain usually can't recover when sand is in play. Modest nature increases attack, and i'm no longer trying to outspeed the Azelf mirror. Not much needed to explain.
Reuniclus (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Psyshock
- Recover
- Calm Mind
- Focus Blast
Standard defensive Reuniclus. The thing's nuts, heals everything off and blasts. Really I am not sure if I like it as much as everyone else does, but it does a good job at sponging hits and that's what I like about it. On this particular team I need something that sponges hits since I am constantly switching. This is the main guy.
Magnezone @ Leftovers
Trait: Magnet Pull
EVs: 172 HP / 252 SAtk / 84 Spd
Modest Nature
- Hidden Power [Fire]/ Hidden Power [Ice]
- Thunderbolt
- volt charge
- Substitute
The nuke. Magnezone seriously is so nasty this format. Being able to break through steels, and when it's done with them, sit behind a Magnet charged Substitute just makes people want to cry themselves to sleep. I'm considering switching out Magnet Rise, but i'm not sure what I would really replace it with. It hurts when Garchomp can switch in on me and get a free Swords Dance/Substitute, and from there i'm sorta fucked. But otherwise, this dude rids me of steels so easily. Choice Band Bullet Punch is like a 10HKO lmao. It's awesome. HP Fire may not be as necessary as I thought, so possibly switching that for Hp Ice may be the way to go. Format breaker :). Zone also gives me extra security vs anything that Zapdos somehow loses to, EX; Scizor. Volt charge is a cool little addition that works whenever I KO anything steel.
Conkeldurr (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Guts
EVs: 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 SDef
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Payback
Machamp was my main go to 'Mon in Gen. 4, and Conkeldurr seems like another version of him with much more power, much less disruption. Is that a good thing? Truthfully, i'm not too sure. I really dig Dynamicpunch and if I was to switch this thing for Machamp, I would probably run T-Wave on Azelf over Flamethrower just cause the flinch hax are so unfairly cheap. I do like this Bulk Up set, although I do feel like now people are really aware of how to beat Conkeldurr, which is a bad thing, possibly why I feel the split indecisiveness I feel right now about him. I am testing champ and tbh it doesn't make much of a difference besides me losing priority. I like Conkeldurr much better.
Tyranitar (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Pursuit
- Crunch
- Fire Punch
- Superpower
My second trap card. I get to beat every gay psychic Pokemon that thinks that they're cool (especially Espeon switching into Azelf, Latios, Latias, Reuniclus if it's at 50%, Mew, Jellicent, Gengar, Uxie, Azelf, Sigilyph, Deoxys S, etc). This thing pretty much rules out everything typed Psychic. It also catches Ferrothorns that decide to stay in on me. Tyranitar is IMO the best Pokemon in the game right now, whether it be the mixed attacker set, Choice scarf, choice band, etc. I don't like choice as much just due to getting set up on by scizor and other Pokemon, maybe a suggestion or counter? meh.
Zapdos @ Leftovers
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 220 Def / 8 SAtk / 32 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Thunderbolt
- Heat Wave
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Roost
Standard defensive Zapdos. Runs rampart on things that can't stop it. Although Blissey is an autoloss, Conkeldurr is there to save the day so Zapdos can switch. My first Scizor counter.
Threat list coming soon.
