[OVERVIEW]
Yveltal's good Speed, exceptional ability, and access to an amazing combination of Max Moves allow it to be a prominent offensive threat in the metagame. In addition, its Dark typing allows it to perform well against the plethora of Psychic-types such as Calyrex-S, Solgaleo, and Necrozma-DM. Yveltal is also fairly versatile, as it can run either a fully offensive set or a more support-oriented Assault Vest set. However, it struggles against damage reduction like screens from Grimmsnarl and Lapras and Snarl from Incineroar, as it is reliant on Max Darkness to increase its damage output. In addition, it matches up poorly against Electric-types like Regieleki, Zapdos, and Thundurus as well as Fairy-types such as Xerneas and Tapu Fini.
[SET]
name: Offensive
move 1: Dark Pulse
move 2: Oblivion Wing / Hurricane
move 3: Heat Wave / Sucker Punch
move 4: Protect
item: Weakness Policy / Life Orb
ability: Dark Aura
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
* Oblivion Wing allows Yveltal to recover HP from its targets and use Max Airstream to boost its Speed when Dynamaxed. Alternatively, Hurricane can be used for greater power at the cost of accuracy.
* Heat Wave hits Steel-types like Zacian-C and Assault Vest Kartana. Alternatively, Sucker Punch can be used to take out Calyrex-S before it can attack and damage faster Pokemon like Regieleki.
* Weakness Policy takes advantage of Yveltal's great bulk and many weaknesses, while Life Orb can be used for immediate power at the cost of recoil damage. Pokemon that can reliably activate Weakness Policy like Raichu and Comfey are greatly appreciated.
[SET]
name: Assault Vest
move 1: Foul Play
move 2: Snarl
move 3: Oblivion Wing
move 4: Sucker Punch / Dark Pulse
item: Assault Vest
ability: Dark Aura
nature: Calm
evs: 180 HP / 20 Def / 44 SpA / 156 SpD / 108 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
* Foul Play allows Yveltal to deal very high damage to Pokemon that boost their Attack such as Groudon, Necrozma-DM, and Calyrex-I.
* Snarl weakens special attackers like Dialga and hits Calyrex-S.
* Oblivion Wing improves Yveltal's longevity by granting it recovery when it attacks, as well as giving it access to Max Airstream in Dynamax to boost its Speed.
* Sucker Punch lets Yveltal quickly KO Calyrex-S, while Dark Pulse provides a more reliable Dark-type STAB move.
* The given EVs alongside an Assault Vest and a Calm nature allows Yveltal to survive a Dazzling Gleam from Xerneas after a Geomancy and outrun Modest Venusaur.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Tailwind provides a greater Speed boost than Max Airstream, although the latter also deals damage and is thus the preferred Speed-boosting option. Roost can be used to improve Yveltal's longevity, and Taunt can be used to prevent status moves like Trick Room.
