Zapdos | SM | Smogon Strategy Pokedex

[Overview]
-Zapdos' great ability in Pressure allows it to wear down a variety of teams with its good STAB combination of Electric and Flying, while also draining PP from threats.
-Zapdos is one of the most effective and consistent Defog users in the tier due to its typing, ability to punish U-turn with a great Ability in Static, and its pivoting potential with Volt Switch and Heavy-Duty Boots.
-It checks prominent threats in the current metagame, including Rillaboom, Excadrill, Kartana, and Tornadus-Therian, which allows it to remove hazards on forced switches.
-It has the unique property of being able to threaten Defog users such as Corviknight, Tornadus-Therian, and Mandibuzz with STAB Electric-type attacks while staying in on them comfortably, allowing even more pivot opportunities and chip damage.
-Access to Hurricane allows it to threaten Ground-type switchins with chip damage, namely Garchomp and Landorus-T, while Heat Wave lets it pressure Ferrothorn and other Steel-types.
-Zapdos can, however, struggle against several notable Pokemon, such as Tyranitar and Kyurem, which easily threaten it off the field. In addition to that, each resists one of Zapdos' STAB attacks.
-Zapdos also dislikes Toxic and Knock Off. Toxic puts it on a timer, while Knock Off is carried by several Pokemon it wants to check. Knock Off takes its item and allows it to get whittled down by Stealth Rock damage.

[SET]
name: Substitute+Pressure
move 1: Discharge
move 2: Hurricane
move 3: Substitute
move 4: Roost
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 160 HP / 108 SpA / 240 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
-This set allows Zapdos to make headway against many balance and bulky offense teams.
-Zapdos can take advantage of common Pokemon, namely Toxapex and Corviknight, and it is able to set up Substitute as it forces a switch out. This removes the need for prediction, and with its surprisingly good STAB combination, it is able to threaten a variety of teams without fearing much in direct retaliation.
-Substitute also enables Zapdos to click Hurricane freely with less fear of missing.
-Pressure is crucial, as it allows Zapdos to PP stall moves like Clefable's Moonblast, Heatran's Magma Storm,

[SET]
name: Utility
move 1: Discharge / Volt Switch
move 2: Roost
move 3: Hurricane / Heat Wave
move 4: Defog / Toxic
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Static
nature: Timid
evs: 248 HP / 220 Def / 40 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
-Zapdos can choose between Discharge and Volt Switch for its Electric move. Discharge helps it spread paralysis more effectively and has more power, while Volt Switch allows it to pivot on the many switches it can force and support pivoting teams.
-Roost gives Zapdos reliable recovery so that it can continue to switch into threats like Hawlucha and Rillaboom and keep its longevity for more Defogs.
-Hurricane is a secondary STAB choice and allows Zapdos to hit Rillaboom and other Pokemon it switches into hard. It also allows it to heavily chip Ground-types like Landorus-Therian and Garchomp.
-Heat Wave allows Zapdos to threaten common Steel-type switchins like Ferrothorn, Excadrill, or Melmetal.
-Defog is an essential utility move for Zapdos, since it forces switches from other Flying-types and offensive Pokemon like Kartana, which allows it to consistently remove hazards.
-Toxic is an option to pressure Ground-types and other Pokemon like Tyranitar that Zapdos normally would not threaten.
-Heavy-Duty Boots allow Zapdos to remove entry hazards with little risk, and help its pivoting ability and defensive utility when switching into the Pokemon it checks.
-40 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Zapdos to outpace Rillaboom and force it out with Hurricane or Heat Wave.

-Good teammates for Zapdos include Pokemon that appreciate paralysis on faster Pokemon that would usually revenge kill them, like Tapu Lele, Hydreigon, and Nidoking. Volcarona also enjoys not having to worry about Tornadus-Therian while Zapdos is around.
-Hippowdon, Tyranitar, and Swampert appreciate the checking and removal of Rillaboom and Kartana, while Heatran, Ferrothorn, and Melmetal appreciate Fighting-types like Hawlucha being held back.
-Zapdos itself struggles somewhat against Heatran, so Pokemon like Garchomp are good partners for it.
-Zapdos also appreciates the pressure Rillaboom and Kartana exert on Tyranitar and the tier's Ground-types.

Checks and Counters
====
***Specially Defensive Walls*** Though passive, Blissey is a common switchin to Zapdos' attacks, can punish non-Substitute sets with Toxic, set up Stealth Rock, or Teleport into an offensive threat. Zapdos can barely touch Tyranitar, and it's forced out by its Rock-type moves, allowing it to set up Stealth Rock for almost free every time it comes in. Slowking-Galar also checks Zapdos. Uninvested Discharge isn't even a guaranteed 6HKO on the standard Assault Vest set. It can also threaten poisoning with Sludge Bomb or set up a Future Sight.
***Garchomp*** Garchomp's electric immunity allows it to switch into Zapdos and threaten it with Stone Edge while outspeeding it; another scenario where Stealth Rock is set up on Zapdos fleeing.
***Ice-Types*** Kyurem and Weavile in particular take advantage of Zapdos, with the former getting to set up Substitutes or force the Zapdos user to find a switchin, while the latter is able to Swords Dance, Knock Off a switchin's item, or just kill Zapdos with a STAB ice move.
***Knock Off*** Zapdos despises Knock Off, which is carried by Pokemon it wants to switch into such as Rillaboom, Kartana, and Tornadus-T, and once its Heavy-Duty Boots are gone it finds it difficult to switch into threats, as it will lose a quarter of its health upon doing so, as well as losing some of its overall longevity.

This is an AM QC check. Things I feel could be included.

-Zapdos can, however, struggle against several notable Pokemon, such as Tyranitar, Weavile, and Kyurem, which easily threaten it off the field.

Pretty sure there are other downsides, mention Knock Off and Toxic as the former removes its HDBs which makes Zapdos less effective as a switch-in and Toxic can put it on a timer and dismantles it longevity altogether, forcing it to Roost more often. Both losing its HDBs and Toxic makes it less effective of checking common Pokemon such as Rillaboom and Kartana. Also these Pokemon itself can dish out a Knock Off while Zapdos is switching in.

-Roost gives Zapdos reliable recovery so that it can continue to switch into threats and keep its longevity for more Defogs.

Mention in which threats it can switch in. (Kartana, Rillaboom)

-Hurricane is a secondary STAB choice and allows Zapdos to hit Rillaboom and other Pokemon it switches into hard. It also allows it to heavily chip Ground-types like Landorus-Therian.

I would mention Garchomp here too, as this Pokemon is another very prevelant Ground-type in the metagame.

-Defog is an essential utility move for Zapdos, since it forces switches from other Flying-types and offensive Pokemon like Kartana.

Explain Defog a little bit better here, explain how it supports its teammates in the long term of the game, since Zapdos is reliable to support its teammates over the long course.

-Heavy-Duty Boots allow Zapdos to remove Stealth Rocks without taking much damage and allow it to switch into the battlefield freely.

Mention how Defog removes Stealth Rocks instead, but say HDBs keeps it healthy to do that task.

-Volt Switch allows for more momentum to bring in Zapdos' teammates on Rain like Barraskewda onto the field.

Pretty sure not only Barraskewda appreciates the momentum Zapdos gives.

-Static is used over Pressure to maintain defensive utility and allow Zapdos' team to set the pace of the match with their own momentum.

Static section: I would mention how common U-turners which try to switch out on an unfavorable MU can get dismantles by the possible effect of Static.

This is as i've said an AM check and things I figured, I know your thread is still on WIP but if you feel like you can include these things in the meantime :)

Another AM Check

-Zapdos also dislikes Toxic and Knock Off, the former putting it on a timer and the latter hindering its longevity. Knock Off is also carried by Rillaboom and Kartana, two things Zapdos wants to switch into.

Specify a little bit better how Toxic and Knock Off can punish Zapdos. Toxic can wear it down in the long run, which gives it trouble checking Pokemon and also forces to Roost more often. Losing HDBs makes Zapdos less consistent as a switch-in to check the Pokemon it wants to check.
I would put them in 2 Bullet Points since it makes things easier for you to explain.

-Roost gives Zapdos reliable recovery so that it can continue to switch into threats like Hawlucha and Rillaboom and keep its longevity for more Defogs.

I would name the Pokemon after the VR to keep it more precise Rillaboom, Kartana, Hawlucha would be the order. Kartana is important to name here, as it is a really prevelant Pokemon in the metagame. If you include another Pokemon, I would say Melmetal is also a Pokemon which gets checked by Zapdos.

-Zapdos itself struggles somewhat against Heatran, so Pokemon like Garchomp are good partners for it.

Explain why Zapdos struggles with Heatran and why Garchomp makes up for a great partner. In example: Heatran can trap Zapdos with Magma Storm and wears it down with it, also it can make use of Taunt to disrupt Zapdos' Roost. Garchomp is a great teampartner as it resists Fire-type moves from Heatran and can threaten it reliably with its STAB move in Earthquake.

-Zapdos also appreciates the pressure Rillaboom and Kartana exert on Tyranitar and the tier's Ground-types.

Go a little bit more deeper into that section, like what Ground-types you mean. It is important for the reader to know what you mean.

In the teampartner section I am pretty sure there is plenty more. Also as a starting sentence, include on what team archetypes Zapdos finds itself on.

-Zapdos acts as a Rillaboom stop on rain teams and pressures it, while also providing power and momentum if it chooses to run Volt Switch.
-Zapdos' main teammates on Rain include Pelipper to set the weather, Barraskewda to threaten special walls.
-Ferrothorn benefits from rain as well, and forms a solid defensive backbone for Zapdos against the things that threaten it.

Pretty sure on offensive rain-teams Zapdos has more than just these teampartners.

Teampartners include the aforementioned Seismitoad, moreover Tornadus-Therian can be mentioned.

Put the emphasiz more on what Pelipper offers for Zapdos in this case, it summons the rain for Zapdos to break properly with a Weather Ball turning into a Water-type.

Include also defensive teampartners mainly Ferrothorn, and mention how Ferrothorn supports the rest of the team and what zapdos can do for the team.

***Toxic*** Just like Knock Off, Zapdos' longevity is hurt by Toxic

Explain that point in the Checks & Counters section a little bit better.

For the Utility set, would it be worth running 68 SpD EVs to avoid a 2HKO from +2 Tornadus-Therian's Hurricane (+2 252 SpA Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 68 SpD Zapdos: 162-191 (42.2 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO)? Particularly because Discharge doesn't OHKO back. This would change the spread to 248 HP / 152 Def / 68 SpD / 40 Spe Timid.

I'm not QC, but this is sorta risky because, as nice as not being 2HKOed by +2 Torn is, it makes Zapdos a less reliable response to something like Kartana—not to mention they probably wouldn't risk staying in to tank the Discharge unless it was late game/they had no choice or Zapdos was in KO range anyway, and even if you get 2HKO'd (not overly likely from full health) there is also the chance of paralysis on your Discharge anyway.

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Kartana Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 152 Def Zapdos: 341-402 (89 - 104.9%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

IMO it's sorta iffy double-dipping on defensive investment when you don't have the luxury of being Regen/Magic Guard/Ferro or Corv's defensive stats because it's difficult to guarantee exactly how healthy you will be to make specific defensive benchmarks worthwhile, but I think it is probably decent for an OO type spread at the very least.

can't sleep so gonna do another am check :psygrump: feel free to implement whatever makes sense to you!

is the offensive rain set relevant enough to be its own set in the analysis? i'd consult qc team about what the 2nd set should be, if there is going to be one, considering you havent had an official qc check yet and most zapdos atm are static defensive or pressure variants

additions, removals, comments

Zapdos | SM | Smogon Strategy Pokedex

[Overview]
-Zapdos is one of the most effective and consistent Defog users in the tier due to its typing, ability to punish punishing U-turn with a great Ability in Static, and its pivoting potential with Volt Switch and Heavy-Duty Boots.
-Zapdos can also run offensive sets on Rain-focused teams, using powerful STAB attacks Thunder and Hurricane without fear of missing. if ur going to mention rain in the overview here i would also mention weather ball as a reliable way to hit ground types and heatran
-It checks prominent threats in the current metagame, including Rillaboom, Excadrill, Kartana, and Tornadus-T, Hawlucha, Zapdos-Galar, and Melmetal, as well as Urshifu-Rapid-Strike to an extent, which allows it to remove hazards on forced switches. zapdos struggles vs edge lucha and toxic melm, and i don't think gzap is really worth mentioning because of how uncommon it is. watershifu is also a pretty big reach considering how surging 2hkos effortlessly - i might mention this in the analysis but i don't think it fits here
-It has the unique property of being able to threaten other Defog users such as Corviknight, Tornadus-Therian, and Mandibuzz with STAB Electric-type electric attacks while staying in on them comfortably, allowing even more pivot opportunities and chip damage.
-Access to Hurricane allows it to threaten Ground-type switchins with chip damage, namely Garchomp and Landorus-Therian, while Heat Wave lets it pressure Ferrothorn and other Steel-types. On rain teams, unmissable Hurricanes and access to Weather Ball make it difficult to switch into for many team compositions.
-Zapdos can, however, struggle against several notable Pokemon, such as Tyranitar, Weavile, and Kyurem, which easily threaten it off the field. this reads kind of weirdly - weavile can't really switch in safely and fears static, the other two are able to switch in and force it out because of their key resistances and strong stabs. elaborate on why these pokemon are good checks a bit
-Zapdos also dislikes Toxic and Knock Off, the former putting it on a timer and the latter hindering its longevity. Knock Off is also carried by Rillaboom and Kartana, two things Zapdos wants to switch into. reword this last sentence, reads weirdly

i think pressure variants are definitely worth mentioning here in the overview if not given their own set

[SET]
name: Utility
move 1: Discharge / Volt Switch
move 2: Roost
move 3: Hurricane / Heat Wave
move 4: Defog / Toxic
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Static

evs: EVs: 248 HP / 220 Def / 40 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
-Zapdos can choose between Discharge and Volt Switch for its Electric move. Discharge helps it spread paralysis more effectively and has more power, while Volt Switch allows it to pivot on the many switches it can force. what are the trade-offs between using each of these moves? on which types of teams would you choose either of them?
-Roost gives Zapdos reliable recovery so that it can continue to switch into threats like Hawlucha and Rillaboom and keep its longevity for more Defogs.
-Hurricane is a secondary STAB choice and allows Zapdos to hit Rillaboom and other Pokemon it switches into hard. It also allows it to heavily chip Ground-types like Landorus-Therian and Garchomp.
-Heat Wave allows Zapdos to threaten common Steel-type switchins like Ferrothorn, Excadrill, or Melmetal. Ferrothorn with heavy damage, while also nailing Excadrill and Kartana and spreading burn.
-Defog is an essential utility move for Zapdos, since it forces switches from other Flying-types how does Defog force switches? and offensive Pokemon like Kartana, which allows it to consistently remove hazards.
Stealth Rocks with defog without taking much damage and allow it to switch into the battlefield freely.

Volcarona also enjoys not having to worry about Tornadus-Therian while Zapdos is around. i really don't think paralysis is a relevant enough factor to create a point around, especially when zapdos is usually scoring paras on slower mons after forcing out the faster ones
-Hippowdon, Tyranitar, and Swampert appreciate the checking and removal of Rillaboom and Kartana, while Heatran, Ferrothorn, and Melmetal appreciate Fighting-types like Hawlucha being held back. what separates zapdos from other defensive birds? why use it over something like torn or corv?
-Zapdos itself struggles somewhat against Heatran, so Pokemon like Garchomp are good partners for it. heatran usually doesn't want to switch into a zapdos discharge or volt. i would focus more on the ground types and ttar here
-Zapdos also appreciates the pressure Rillaboom and Kartana exert on Tyranitar and the tier's Ground-types.

[SET]

move 2: Hurricane
move 3: Weather Ball / Roost
move 4: Volt Switch
item: Heavy-Duty Boots

is this set relevant enough to be a main set? considering rain usage isn't exactly high and it isn't even a "required" rain pokemon like pelipper, barraskewda, or something like ferrothorn/torn-t, i would honestly just mention its offensive rain set in OO and consult qc about what to do with this slot

[SET COMMENTS]
-Zapdos can use a rather threatening offensive set on rain teams with its good Special Attack stat and access to moves that synergize well with the weather.
-Thunder cannot miss in rain, and is powerful STAB with a chance to paralyze. Thunder can cripple switchins and forces out every Water-type in the tier save for Swampert.
-Hurricane is just as powerful as Thunder, and hits Ground-types that attempt to switch in with perfect accuracy. Combined with Thunder, it can hit a huge majority of the tier for neutral or super-effective damage.
-Weather Ball helps Zapdos to wipe out most Ground-types and Heatran while in the rain, and is overall great coverage if Zapdos' STAB attacks can't do the job.
-Volt Switch allows for more momentum to bring in Zapdos' teammates on Rain like Barraskewda, Seismitoad, and Crawdaunt onto the field.
-Static is used over Pressure to maintain defensive utility and dismantle common U-turn users like Rillaboom.

-Zapdos acts as a Rillaboom stop on rain teams and pressures it, while also providing power and momentum if it chooses to run Volt Switch.
-Zapdos' main teammates on Rain include Pelipper to set the weather, Barraskewda to threaten special walls.

there's no OO section here

Would it be better to combine Tyranitar and Blissey into "Specially Defensive Walls" and mention Galarian Slowking too, as uninvested Discharge isn't even a guaranteed 6HKO on the standard Assault Vest set while it can launch off a Future Sight or threaten a Sludge Bomb poison?

-Zapdos itself removing as the other point about Heatran is gone struggles somewhat against Heatran, so Pokemon like Garchomp and Slowking A defensive check that's very reliable are good partners for it.

***Ground-types:*** Garchomp's electric immunity allows it to switch into Zapdos and threaten it with Stone Edge while outspeeding it; another scenario where Stealth Rock is set up on Zapdos switching out. The proper terminology. Gastrodon and Swampert are good checks that belong here. Swampert is another Stealth Rock setter that beats Zapdos too.

Apologies for posting again so soon, but after discussion with other members of the QC team I want you to put the Offensive set in Other Options. It isn't used very much on rain teams, and it competes with Thundurus-T and Tornadus-T, with both having access to Nasty Plot, while the former has an Electric-immunity which is valuable for Rain and the latter is much faster.

Hello, I hope you're doing well today,

The QC team has chosen to reassign this analysis. We feel as though in its current state, it would take far too many revisions to get it up to par, as we have noticed a lack of understanding as to Zapdos's role in the current metagame and a general lack of detail. Given how pressed for resources the team is at the moment, we feel it is for the best that we have someone else write it. Despite this, you are, of course, free to reserve another Pokemon in the future.

I'll be locking this. If you have any further questions, feel free to DM me or Ruft!
