Zombieland is the latest Zombie movie out there. So how does it fair as a movie? Is it your standard zombie horror movie? I am delighted to say that no, it is not. Zombieland is a Zombie movie at times, but at times it just becomes a nice little comedy about surviving a world where almost every one else is dead. This movie combines everything you expect from your typical zombie movie, with the best parts of a favorite comedy. Because that is what this movie is. A comedy. And a great one at that.

Now when you hear the words "Zombie Movie" you would expect a movie where people are constantly on the run from Zombies that you see at least once every 5 minutes, with carnage and blood bath galore. Thankfully, this movie separates itself from the traditions and cliches. In fact, while watching, their seemed to be whole 30 minutes stretches where not a single Zombie is seen. While usually this would be the worst part of the movie, Zombieland makes the best of these moments, or makes these the best moments, depending on your point of view. Comedy runs abound when you command the 4 main characters and their interactions with the post-apocalyptic world.

Now, the 4 characters seems to start out as sterotypes. Columbus was your typical secluded (pre-Zombie Day) no friends, virgin nerd. Tallahassee is your Gun-Toting, multi-weapon wielding, tough guy in the business of kicking ass. And Little Rock and Wichita are two girls who depend only on themselves conning others to get what they want. However, most of these stereotypes don't last long. Soon after we meet Tallahassee, we learn that his one goal in this world is to find a Twinkie. Colombus is actually adept at surviving in the Post-Zombie world. And I would go on, but that starts to spoil the movie.

Now where this movie really shines is the humour. I've only slightly brushed upon this, but this is (imo) what differentiates this from most Zombie moves and will make this a classic for years to come. Sticking the aforementioned 4 people in a car together traveling around the country is a great way to have some interactions, especially when you have the 12 year old girl and the old adult talking to each other about different things from their generations. In fact, from the opening montage till the ending scene, you and your friends will be roaring in laughter.

Overall - Zombieland delivers to all it's main target audiences. With Zombies acting like Zombies, humour that will leave you talking on the ride home from the theater (which is where you SHOULD be seeing it), and even a slight bit of romantic comedy (not spoilers! It's hinted at in the previews!), Zombieland is a move that will please even those who never were fans of Zombie anything. (like myself) - 9.5/10

Nice review, I also loved this movie. It exceeded my expectations greatly, and as mentioned above it is not your standard zombie horror flick. Almost every line is hilarious and there isn't really a weak point in the movie. Definitely recommend this to anyone even if these kind of movies aren't your thing! Go see it!

how does it compare to shaun of the dead? your review seems to paint the picture that the zombie horror/comedy thing hasn't been done but this is obviously not true

I'm not gonna lie, I haven't seen Shaun of the dead. And I understand that Zombie Horror/Comedy movies have been made (Brain Dead by Peter Jackson is a personal favourite), but from what I have come to expect from zombie/horror movies is very little in the way of actual comedy.

You should not say you are "proud to say" anything about this movie unless you had any hand in its production. It is not like picking to watch this and/or enjoy it is against the common opinion.

It beats the ever living crap out of it.

This isn't just a zombie comedy, but a parody of zombie comedies and horror movies in general.

Going to see this on saturday with some friends, I thought Shaun of the Dead was awesome, and judging by the trailer, this should be Much funnier. Can't wait to go see it for myself though =D

I was going to write off this movie because I'm not a big fan of the zombie movie genre but since you said you weren't a fan of zombie anything and still liked it I may give it a shot.

Well, you convinced me to see it but no zombie movie will ever top off Shaun of the Dead.
OK, fair point: It's Shaun of the Dead with American humor in all the places it had British humor. As an American, I find it funnier, despite Shaun of the Dead being awesome.

Just saw this movie last night, and all I can say is WOW! Completely exceeded my expectations and had me laughing my head off all the way through. I mean BILL. FUCKING. MURRAY! Enough said. My only small gripe is that I was hoping for some kind of in-joke or reference to Kingpin that sadly never materialized. Oh well, can't have it all.

I actually enjoyed this more than Shaun Of The Dead, which I also loved. Though I agree that the comedy is quite different and you therefore can't directly compare them, so it will always be a matter of opinion. Zombieland is zombie horror spoof mixed with homages to many of the great American comedies of time gone by, whereas SOTD is zombie horror spoof aimed mainly at Edgar Wright / Simon Pegg and Spaced fanboys.

Saw the movie this weekend. Its really good for the most part. I'd buy it I suppose. However, it had some awqward points in the movie...

Highlight~
Random bits of foreshadowing
Poor CGI at times... when the ride hits the two zombies
Cut out head decapitation for whatever reason... >.<

Despite those minor nitpicks. I highly recommend seeing this movie for a good laugh.

P.S: Don't compare this movie to Shaun of the Dead.

Saw this movie on friday, it was hilarious, tons of parts where I laughed out loud. Kinda disappointed that there was no chainsaw though. (or was there?)

Probably the best Action/Comedy combination movie I have ever seen.

I do not think I stoped laughing once.

I really recomend this movie to anyone, hec I go see it in theatres again.

I saw this movie a while back, I would watch it again if I could. Probably one of the better films of this year.

There was but briefly.

zombie land is a superb film (zombie kill of the week pure epicness) but shaun of the dead is the best and will allways be the best zombie film

I thought it was an excellent movie, good mix of gore and humour. I really liked the rules he had set-up (Cardio, doubletap, etc).

The climax in the amusement park was pretty awesome.
