ZOMG pwning OU team

Latest Edit:
-16 Sept (Fixed Synergy analysis in main post and added sprites for replacements. I kept the first analysis of my original team for peopel to still review and comment on to see what I replaced...if/when I do make replacements) Edited Empoleon to have splash plate instead of wide lens and surf instead of hydro pump)

-I have been tasked by a friend to help him build an OU team that would be fun to play and effective. I put together the following team based on that theory. All the pokemon's sets are rather entertaining to use, whether to be annoying or to take out the opponent easily, and are equally effective. I've been testing out the team for roughly a week now, and am winning 7/10 times with Gengar being the bane of my existence. I took alot of time building this thread for your humble opinions. Be harsh, be honest, but also be rewarding where you see positive builds and ideas. I'm looking for overall feedback, suggestions for improvement, and just general comments. Here is my team at a glance:

220px-395-Empoleon_.png

Empoleon @ Splash Plate
Modest Nature | Torrent
156 Hit Points | 252 Special Attack | 100 Speed

Moveset:
1.Stealth Rock
2.Surf
3.Aqua Jet
4.Grass Knot

Moveset Analysis:
1.Stealth Rock: A must staple for any lead. I rarely use this move, but it is there to setup if needed.
2.Surf: Empoleon gains massive damage with this STAB move. He can OHKO many leads (such as Hippo), and if any are sashed….Aqua jet quickly finishes them off.
3.Aqua Jet: Pretty much explained above, but a good move to finish off any sashers, and a good poke to finish off low health Pokemon later in the match.
4.Grass Knot: This move is to threaten Swampert….a lead that Surf cannot take care of. It also can give me a chance to setup stealth rock if Swampert gets switched out.
5.(**Note: anti lead inspired by frozenvirus….great suggestion!)

Synergy:
1.Ground=Latias | Rotom-H | Swampert | Breloom
2.Fighting= Latias | Rotom-H | Swampert
3.Electric= Latias | Swampert | Breloom | Rotom-H

190px-036Clefable.png

Clefable @ Life Orb
Quiet Nature | Magic Guard
252 Hit Points | 108 Attack | 150 Defense

Moveset:
1.Softboiled
2.Fire Blast
3.Grass Knot
4.Double Edge

Moveset Analysis:
1.Softboiled: Because of Clefables lack of resistances, softboiled is very useful in keeping Clefable alive. He can generally take any attack (except a strong fighting attack), softboiled off the damage, and start attacking. Magic Guard prevents any indirect damage, so I am only softboiling off direct attacks…not damage from Life Orb or toxic or spikes … etc etc
2.Fire Blast: Fire Blast burns through steels likes Scizor (hoping Superpower doesn’t happen), Magnezone, Bronzong, Metagross, and Lucario (often switches in to take down Clefable, but is OHKO’d with Fire Blast on the entrance). It also gives good coverage against Pokemon like the troublesome Breloom and Celebi.
3.Grass Knot: Used for heavy pokemon like Swampert. Also effective against annoying waters like Suicine (thought often not strong enough to take down in OH), and grounds.
4.Double Edge: The icing on the cake! With 120 base power, STAB, Life Orb, and no recoil damage due to Magic Guard, this move can do really good damage against any pokemon not resistant to normal attacks or not with a very good defense. A good move to use against Blissey’s weak 10 defense, although I must watch out for Seismic Toss.

Synergy:
1.Fighting= Latias | Rotom-H | Dusknoir

rotomheat.png

Rotom-H @ Choice Scarf
Timid Nature | Levitate
252 Special Attack | 252 Speed | 6 Special Defense

Moveset:
1.Overheat
2.Shadow Ball
3.Thunderbolt
4.Trick
Moveset Analysis:
1.Overheat: Must have for killing the every annoying Scizor. Also a good move for Breloom, Celebi, and the steels listed above in Clefables moveset. I don’t find myself using Overheat very often, maybe once a match, but it has always proven useful. Overheat is a good move to take down a Swords Dance Lucario.
2. Shadow Ball: My “catch all” move. With STAB power, Shadow Ball becomes quite formidable. Mainly for taking down Cresselia, but useful against Pokemon with 1x defense to Ghost moves.
3.Thunderbolt: Gotta have an electric move! Because Gyarados can be quite a nuisance to any team, Thunderbolt is reserved to take him out. With his 4x weakness, and my STAB, it is sure to OHKO almost 100% of the time (especially with Stealth Rock damage)
4.Trick: Necessary for those special walls I used to have trouble with. Stops Blissey in her tracks and same with Snorlax who could otherwise switch in and be invulnerable.

Synergy:
1.Dark= Breloom | Empoleon | Scizor
2.Ghost= Empoleon | Scizor

150px-ArtYonoir.png

Dusknoir @ Leftovers
Impish Nature | Pressure
252 Hit Points | 108 Defense | 150 Special Defense

Moveset:
1.Earthquake
2.Ice Punch
3.Pain Split
4.Will o wisp

Moveset Analysis:
1.Earthquake: I kept switching between Earthquake to Fire Punch to Shadow Sneak and ended up on Earthquake because of better type coverage and my overabundance of fire moves and lack of good ground moves. Dusknoir can soak up electric attacks and then take them out with Earthquake, pending they do not have a Ghost/Dark attack. Even if they have one, it wont typically OHKO me due to the EV spread. Also a good switch in to Lucario pending Dark Pulse.
2.Ice Punch: He has this take care of Dragons and Grounds. Ice Punch also boast great type coverage when paired with Earthquake.
3.Pain Split: Pain Split isn’t the greatest method of healing, but it is all that he has. Thanks to his very low hp, Pain Split is often useful in zapping Pokemons HP.
4.Will O Wisp: Obviously to lower attacks of the strong grounds I’m trying to take out with ice punch (i.e. salamence, hippo, dragonite)

Synergy:
1.Dark= Breloom | Empoleon | Scizor
2.Ghost= Scizor | Empoleon

150px-380Latias.png

Latias @ Scarf
Timid Nature | Levitate
80 Hit Points | 176 Speed | 252 Special Attack

Moveset:
1.Draco Meter
2.Surf
3.Thunderbolt
4.Trick

Moveset Analysis:
1.Draco Meter: Since Latias is my revenge killer, DM is perfect for OHKO other Dragons like Salamence and Dragonite. Main move, coupled with STAB, to take out Pokemon. Few resist the ever powerful Dragon type moves.
2.Thunderbolt: For bulky waters like suicine, vaporeon, and gyarados. Not as effective as Draco Meter overall unless the opponent will take Super Effective damage.
3.Surf: Water is arguably the best type coverage move. Few resist it, and it can take down the all might ape, Infernape.
4.Trick: Same idea as Rotom-H. Take down the walls!

Synergy:
1.Dark= Breloom | Empoleon | Scizor
2.Ghost= Scizor | Empoleon
3.Ice= Empoleon | Clefable | Rotom-H | Scizor
4.Bug= Empoleon | Rotom-H | Dusknoir
5.Dragon= Empoleon | (maybe) Rotom | Swampert

286Breloom.png

Breloom @ Toxic Orb
Adamant Nature | Poison Heal
46 Hit Points | 252 Attack | 212 Speed

Moveset:
1.Spore
2.Substitute
3.Focus Punch
4.Seed Bomb
Moveset Analysis:
1.Spore: Breloom’s cliché moveset is very overused..but for good reason. It is extremely effective! Typically spore is the first move, every opponent knows it, but it is almost always still useful. Also, with a little prediction, if your opponent is expecting spore, a successful Focus Punch is always beautiful damage with STAB, 130 base Attack, 150 attack power, and the EV spread.
2.Substitute: Pretty much always after Spore. Setup with spore, substitute, recover 13% with toxic orb and then focus punch or seed bomb.
3.Focus Punch: protected from flinching with a substitute out, and does massive damage to any normal, steel, or pokemon not resisting fighting. Also, as stated above, the move has beautiful damage.
4.Seed Bomb: Grass coverage with STAB….nuff said. Where Focus Punch fails, seed bomb typically picks up the slack. I used to have leech seed in place of this, but I often found myself stranded due to lack of attacking options. Seed bomb has proven much more useful.

Synergy:
1.Flying= Rotom-H | Latias | Swampert | Empoleon
2.Poison= Rotom-H | Scizor | Empoleon
3.Psychic= Latias | Empoleon | Rotom
4.Ice= Empoleon | Scizor | Rotom-H
5.Fire= Latias | Empoleon | Swampert

Closure:
- So, overall, each pokemon covers each others weaknesses in more than one way. The only thing I am concerned with is the triple weakness to Dark and Ghost. It has not proven to be much of a problem yet because I rarely see powerful enough Dark/Ghost moves to take all three (or even one) of them out. I have KO'd more leads than you can imagine with Empoleon. I spent alot of time on this hoping for good and bad feedback. I keep debating on another scarf pokemon to replace latias or rotom...but can't find a better replacement to suit the team...any suggestions? Thanks for your time and advice!

Something like Tyranitar's pursuit will really ruin your team, especially since it hits three of them for super effective damage. If you want something that can handle Dragons and physical attackers, I would suggest running Swampert over Dusknoir because it not only counters most physical dragons, but is an excellent Tyranitar counter too. With Empoleon using Stealth Rock, Swampert could run:

Swampert @ Leftovers
Relaxed Nature | Torrent
252 HP/252 Defense/6 Special Attack (or SpD or Atk)
Earthquake | Ice Beam | Roar | Protect

Rotom can easily beat Lucario with Overheat.

I also worry about the effectiveness of Clefable. If you want a very reliable physical attacker, you can't go wrong with Scizor. Scizor allows you to 1) beat Tyranitar 2) beat Gengar 3) have even more power than Clefable 4) work well with Swampert, Empoleon and Latias and 5) have something that can actually take on another Latias (I guess Rotom could, but it doesn't enjoy switching in). I would suggest the standard CB Scizor set.

If you are interested in killing of Gengars, then I suggest having a cacturne.

I know that sounds strange but cacturnes sucker punch totally annihilates all fast ghost pokemon such as gengar and froslass. It is also very fun to use, but it could be more helpful on sandstorm teams, but it could use its sand veil as an advantage just in case an ugly tyranitar comes up and can then promptly kill (I'm sorry I meant KO) it with seed bomb. Oh and before I forget heres a good set.

If you want to take advantage of situational sand veil evasion:

Item: Brightpowder
252 Attk 252 Speed 4 Def
Sucker Punch
Substitute
Seed Bomb
Swords Dance

If you want, you can replace seed bomb or swords dance with focus punch

If you just want an attacking moveset:
Item: Leftovers
204 Hp 252 Attk 52 Speed
Substitute
Focus Punch
Sucker Punch
Leech Seed

Both of these sets are very fun to use and can be very effective.

yes i did steal them from smogon lol

After doing some calculations I find that my specially defensive banded tyrannitar with careful nature 252 hp/216 spd takes about 23-27% from surf and 25-30% from draco meteor. Then a pursuit will do 59-70% if you stay in so that might be a problem. Also since rotom is scarfed, tyrannitar can easily come in and kil it too.

How would Roar and Protect help my set?

Ok, so based on some feedback and personal reflection...I made a few changes. I switched Swampert for Dusknoir and Scizor for Clefable.

220px-260Swampert.png

Swampert @ Leftovers
Relaxed Nature | Torrent
252 Hit Points | 252 Defence | 6 Attack

Moveset:
1. Waterfall
2. Avalanche
3. Roar
4. Earthquake

Moveset Analysis:
1.Waterfall: Waterfall is Swampert's staple STAB physical water move. With flinch possibility and pretty high atk power, it will put a dent in almost anyone.
2. Avalanche: For dragons, flying, grounds, and grass types. Could use ice beam but many of those (except grass) will not OHKO swampert, doubling the power of Avalanche.
3. Roar: Used to build damage on stealth rock and to force out dragon dancers, swords dancers, etc
4. Earthquake: Should I really even have to explain this one? STAB, 100 base pwr, great typing....enough said

Synergy:
1.Grass= Latias | Rotom | Breloom | Scizor

130px-212Scizor.png

Scizor @ Choice Band
Adamant Nature | Technician
248 Hit Points | 252 Attack | 4 Speed | 4 SpeD

Moveset:
1. Bullet Punch
2. Pursuit
3. Superpower
4. U-Turn

Moveset Analysis:
1.Bullet Punch: Priority, STAB, Technician, and Band boost this to an impressive 135 power.
2. Pursuit: Great to take out those pesky ghosts I was talking about earlier. All boosts give it 90 power and doubled that if the person is switching out.
3. Superpower: Scizor staple move. used to help Breloom help finish off Blissey and Snorlax and other fighting weak pokemon.
4. U-Turn: Given scizors typing and great atk power, he is a good scout. This is used to predict changes etc. Again, staple Scizor move.

Synergy:
1. Fire= Latias | Swampert | Empoleon

*********
I am now having a few problems with Jolteon. He is really the only pokemon I cant deal with. Shadow Ball tears me apart! and same with Thunderbolt. How should I play against him with my team?

Also, I was thinking of putting in Heatran or Porygon z in place of someone. Any thoughts as to if it would help me with balancing AND fainting jolteon? if so, who should he replace?

Celebi is also kind of an issue. Sounds like Heatran could take care of the Jolteon and the Celebi problem. I don't know who to switch him out for though. Thoughts overall?
