  • Hey there, getting into comp and I tried my hand at building a team around latios, i am extremely novice. What do you think? any suggestions? Im sure it can be improved immensely. Thanks!

Well, your Latios should have Aura Sphere, currently it has 3 moves which is never ideal. I also don't see a central goal to your team, the pokemon you've added seem a bit random and the Primarina feels out of place. Still, this is definitely a great first team, nicely done! :]

I would recommend building around Latios again, but this time considering partners that work well with Latios on many levels (pokemon that can switch in on the things that revenge kill Latios, such as Darkrai, Iron Valiant, and Dragapult, things with pivot moves to help latios enter, etc.)

Thanks for the advice! im not knowledgable enough to do a serious building like you recommended rn unfortunately but i'll take what you said into consideration. Might just steal a team and ladder
Hey Pinkacross, I'm trying to dial in on learning to build balance so I can start playing tours. I can't expect you to teach the whole process of building balance in a comment, but can you help me with the first step of making a breaking core? What types are there and what is the thought process behind them? Thanks in advance boss. See my most recent attempt at building https://pokepast.es/d382e509575c93e5

    Pinkacross
A pivot has switching moves to help get stuff in (uturn, flip turn, volt switch, chilly reception, etc.)

Gotcha boss and is the pick typing based? Like am I looking for something that resists ival weaknesses or does that not matter
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
Well it definitely matters what the pivot specifically does on a team. If you're looking for a pivot that helps with Ival, go with Glowking
Hello Pinka. I haven't built HO at all in Gen 9, so I wanted to try making one after thinking about SP Latias. I'd like some of your thoughts on this team.

Looks solid on first glance, give it a go and see how it does! :]

It's going well, but that's probably because I'm still at Low Elo. I'm just iffy about the 4th slot on Moon
    Dozkek
    Dozkek
I think I'm probably going to just keep Taunt
Hello Pinka, If you don't mind me asking, if I'm building with Dragapult as the main focus of my team, what are the important things it needs from its teammates?
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
Depends, what Dragapult set? That changes things a lot
    Dozkek
    Dozkek
    Probably the Boots set
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
That fits on a lot of playstyles, my favorite of which would be hazard stack
Is there a good resource for delineating the differences between team archetypes? Stuff like stall or HO is pretty easy to identify, but what separates bulky offense from balance? Or even the line between 'standard' offense vs HO?
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
There is no hard line between bulky offense and balance. There IS a hard line between offense and HO. HO is the only playstyle that sacks pokemon as part of the standard gameplan, Stall is the only playstyle that gives up on breaking in favor of walling, but everything in the middle operates under the same fundamental principle.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
Everything from bulky balance to offense utilizes walls to enable more offensive pokemon to make progress, this is the basic gameplan of everything other than Stall and HO. No major line between bulky offense and balance, or balance and offense, just general terms used to express what percentage of the team is frail and/or offensively inclined.
Hey Pinkacross, I was wondering for when building Balance/bulky balance how necessary steel types are - I usually view steels as mandatory but I wanted to see how valid this was.
    Venuesaur
    Venuesaur
Obviously mons like clefable and the metal birds are good knock absorbers too, but I was wondering if other mons would count like garganacl or ting lu; i know these mons struggle when losing lefties though.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
A Knock absorber is a pokemon that is OK with tanking a Knock Off from common Knock Off users, and doesn't mind having its item removed. Good examples are Gliscor, Corviknight, Skarmory, and Clefable. Ting-Lu and Garganacl hate having their item removed so they are not considered knock off absorbers.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
This doesn't mean it's NEVER a good idea to let them take a Knock Off of course, just that you shouldn't count on them to do so when building
    udp643210
    udp643210
so far in playtesting i've struggled with iron valiant and walking wake a lot. gliscor has been somewhat of a problem but i can deal with him more easily than the other two mons.

Here is the full description of my team if you want to give it a read. Sorry its a lot but I'm just super excited to get into this and want to make the best team I can: https://justpaste.it/bi7vg

I'm having trouble determining what to fix, since I can't really find a central goal of your team. Is the idea to be a hazard stack? It seems like a combination of pokemon that suit one another defensively but I don't see a lot of offensive synergy.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
or you could run ID press Crunch Roar set yourself, and phase them out (make sure to be faster than most ID zama spreads)

Thanks for the feedback! I think I'll try running tera ghost on Lando as I think my Zama being more offensive works better on the team. Plus, tera ghost on Lando allows me to spin block more often. I think I'll also run flamethrower on Glowking to help against Zama as I haven't needed to use sludge bomb that often.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
Sounds like a good plan! And yes fthrow will help with that as well!
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
It's definitely not a terrible team and it CAN work but it feels random and has a decent bit of problems, for instance you'll get absolutely destroyed by hstack
    Wellhell
    Wellhell
Abusing hamurott spike stack with latios and weavile , spin block with sinistcha and heatran to lure and trap primarina , alomomola ( with grass tera blast ) , slowking , gliscor and to an extent raging bolt . covert cloak for garganacl salt cure bcuz that has given me some issues . I do have issues with gambit for which I intend to run ID corv over mola but I have not tested that yet .
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
Yea Gambit is definitely a massive issue here, you could try Low Kick Weavile or Will-O-Wisp on Heatran to help.
How high do you think it is possible to climb without using Tera type? Curious question because the last time I've played Pokémon was SM.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
Climb ladder without using Tera? Yes, definitely it is. The fear of Tera will help you out a LOT though, if your opponent knew you wouldn't use Tera, you would be at a major disadvantage.
Hello Pinkacross. I recently watched your video about how to team build, so I decided to make this team: https://pokepast.es/53833ce40d5a6805.
It had some success, but I feel like there's something incredibly crucial that I'm missing. Gliscor and Zamazenta don't feel right on this team. Are there any improvements that you can make?
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
Sinistcha being your water resist is pretty rough, a Walking Wake would run through this team. Lacking a fairy resist is also a major issue, if you face an Enam / Ival you'll be toast. Having a resist to every type on a balance team is non-negotiable.

I have finally made a team I'm happy with. I made this hazard stack team that is partially based off yours, and when I tested it, it was good. However, I'd like your thoughts about it.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
I'd recommend Sucker Punch over Flip Turn on Hrott, looks pretty solid otherwise!
Hi Pinkacross, your content is great and helped me build better teams. I'm having a hard time getting out of the low 1700s with this squad. Any suggestions for improvement? Raging bolt or bolt + volc give me the hardest time but they're not insurmountable. https://pokepast.es/ba9cbf5534914d3c
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
I'd say tera fire leftovers ideally
And yea dualstatus hex pult is very difficult to handle, no way to fix it with just 1 mon unless you slap on a garg somewhere
    FritoLay
That is my favorite Gambit set so I'll try it if i plateau. I just got to a PR #291 on the ladder with your Tera Fire SD suggestion, really appreciate the help.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
    Congrats! :D
Hi Pinkacross, I'm currently stuck around 1200 rating, and recently faced a swiftswim-peliper start. It makes me wonder if my team is ever capable of defeating a drizzle team, or is it going to be one of this team's weakness?

    https://pokepast.es/9d2c2aaf7ad4a65b
    Prqnk3r
So I basically rely on the fact that my other stalling pokemons can do their job at chipping the enemy's hp before I pivot over to dragonite. However, my team is very vulnerable against water types and special attack electric type. What pokemons should I replace to give my dragonite an easier time, or is the playstyle around the dragonite the problem.
    Prqnk3r
Heavy-Duty boot counter me, and I lack proper hazards controller as it is hard to pivot into great tusk sometimes. Also, having him as the only one with knock off also makes it difficult to remove the item. I was thinking of replacing my clodsire with knock off, earthquake gliscor.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
Scarf Dragonite is not a very effective breaker. I'd try replacing it with Dragapult, dual status hex darts. Try Alomomola over Dondozo so you have at least one pivot, and go full HDB. I'd recommend Tera Steel on Alomomola as well.
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
You have a very rough situation against Ground types, perhaps try Air Balloon Kingambit? Not a fix but it helps. This team is very odd, not really sure to begin with mending it. Which pokemon is performing worst?
    Jackman10
    Jackman10
    raging bolt
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
Perhaps try replacing that with a pokemon with a ground immunity. I could see Corviknight working well here.
Hi Pinkacross, watched your HO vid and was inspired to take some artistic liberties with the creative direction, please rate my Nat Dex team at your own convenience:

    https://pokepast.es/398e16d24be59470
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
I don't know much about NatDex but I would advise physdef Gliscor. Your team has no great Knock Off absorber beyond Gliscor, and having it be specially defensive seems not ideal.
Hello Pinkacross, I've been a big fan of your gen 8 teams and was wondering if you had any Hydreigon teams

https://pokepast.es/cb8d9dd8dec3449a I haven't had much success making my own

Additionally, I haven't had much fun playing gen 9, is there any Garchomp teams you might be willing to share https://pokepast.es/5271e4fdddabd02d. Any input will be appreciated!
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
I don't have any updated Hydreigon teams for g8 unfortunately. As for Garchomp in gen 9, this team is definitely the type of build you want to run Garchomp on: Helm Dual hazards on Offense. I think SD Scale Shot Garchomp is beyond unviable. As for improvements, it looks solid on paper, what is the team struggling with in practice?
    wren michael
    wren michael
Meowscarada 6-0's my team and since my team isn't too too bulky it seems I have to tera at the threat of any ice move. So far the only way to deal with the cat is to sack and tera dnite
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
One option I could see here is replacing Glowking for Volcarona. Since you have AV Primarina you could perhaps afford it. This would leave you without a Toxic Spike absorber but only 2 pokemon are effected, so not that big of a deal.
I just started working on this blaziken / hawlucha team and I am a little lost on if I should add more hazards or a taunt user on the team because I tend to sweep or get sweeped. If you could give any input on how to improve it would be greatly appreciated. https://pokepast.es/5b2fd831df37ef49
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
This corviknight is very out of place with the rest of the HO team, I'd recommend removing it for a Glimmora. I think that would fit well here.
I worked on this Hoopa U BO team for a while but now I'm at a point where I'm not sure what to improve. What changes do you think could be made? https://pokepast.es/8a860776856c2885
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
No obvious errors, what's working well and poorly in testing?
    Former Character
    Former Character
It mainly comes down to enamorus that I'm dissatisfied with. I feel like it isn't pulling its weight or I just cant properly use its utility. Should I just run a valiant or something instead? then i have a large fairy weakness
    Pinkacross
    Pinkacross
One somewhat odd choice would be Alomomola over Enamrous. While it's not a ground immune, it matches up well into many ground types, works well with Hoopa, and your team loves Wish support. Give it a try and lmk how it goes! :]
