Nuzlocke Challenge

Well after a very tense Victory Road journey I have arrived at the Pokemon league!

I've cleared out the Sevii islands aswell for the 2 Ultra Balls and have caught everyone I can to assist me...

Introducing...

Bolegnese the Tangela! Caught on Route 21!
Death due to Seaking apparently being able to use Peck :(

Lucky the Gyarados! Caught in Cerulean City via Super Rod!

Pterry the Aerodactyl! Recieved on Cinnabar Island!

Smiley the Gloom (Soon to be Vileplume)! Caught on Bond Bridge, Island 3!

Crusher the Poliwhirl (Soon to be Poliwrath)! Caught on Route 23!

Granite, the Onix! Caught in Victory Road, via Master Ball!

With this motley crew at my disposal, aswell as our old friends Malone, Airheart and Salem the Elite 4 don't stand a chance!

Alot of training of these newbies to go, but next update will be the E4 itself! You won't want to miss it!

One small note, I'm changing up the rules a little for the E4. Healing items can no longer be used in battle, merely between battles. I reckon that'll be a fairer fight.

Lets get reeeeaddddyyyy to griiiiind! Then rumble!

I'm doing this on Platinum, I won't post pictures and things because I honestly don't have anything to do so with, especially anything with decent quality, I will keep you guys updated through regular posts though.

Prologue and Chapter One
Chapter Two
Chapter Three
Chapter Four
Chapter Five

(not a chapter since i'm not gonna make any story-writing for that, there was no real unexpected event apart from the fact that I got a krabby who was initially supposed to be a HM slave but has grown on me since i caught him - well he still has all the HMs)

Current team:
Adeliz, level 16 female sneasel
Sesheta, level 15 female ekans
Heliwhim, level 11 male hoppip
Kirin, level 12 male krabby
RIP:
Cream, male togepi

also i'll be away until the 16th as some of you know, so i won't be able to keep the list of stories up-to-date; here is the code if anyone wants to do it:

Parts 1-3

Parts 4-6

Part 7: What'z u batin' average?

After victory at my first gym, the whole team looks better. A little bit of confidence goes a long way I guess. So, after healing up at the Pokecenter, we head out towards Mt. Moon.

First, however, we get stopped by this guy in a white coat. He says that he's Oak's assistant, and gives me running shoes. "Finally! These clunkers I've got on were killing me." He didn't hear the exclamation of course, because he had to book it back to the lab. Funny how he didn't pass me on the way, but I guess he showed up while I was battling Brock. So, with the ability to run, I get a move on.

Several insecure trainers later (seriously, you're a girl, you WILL get looked at) and My pokemon are flying high. No problems with poison so far, and everyone's going down relatively easy. One of the trainers was carrying a bat, and asked me what my batting average was, I told him I had no clue, as it had been several years since I played baseball. I had to leave before I could get into a game, however, because Scortch seemed to believe that the bat was a torch...

We continued down our road, with the sun blazing before us. Scortch chased a few bunnies around, but I was surprised to note he didn't attack them like he did other pokemon. I guess pokemon don't treat wild animals like other pokemon. I thought about it for a little bit, and decided to ask Oak next time I saw him, so we pressed forward.

"Now let's see, the new pokemon harvesting laws say one per route, but I haven't caught any from here yet. Let's see what we can find." I barely finnish musing to myself when a Spearow pops out of hiding. "Hmm, no replacement to AirAce, but we could always use some more power." Scortch caried out my orders, and I KNOW he didn't hit any harder than he had to, but unfortunately that was enough. No Spearow for me.

I decide to try again in Mt. Moon, and there run across a Zubat. This time things go much better, and Dracula joins the team! I now stop and think about continuing. I am not daunted by caves, in fact, spelunking is one of my favorite pass-times, and I would never need to worry about light with Charmeleon around; however, looking at my team, most of all Dracula, they all need a little power boost.

We begin our training regime again, and promptly my pokemon respond to the training. Except Dracula. I had to switch him out constantly, for fear of being KOd and not doing enough damage. He seemed like he couldn't see what he was doing, and I almost left him behind: when suddenly, in a battle against a jiglypuff, he knew exactly what he was doing. He let out a sonic screach, which I could barely hear, that drove the jiglypuff mad. I checked my pokedex and learned that Dracula had used Supersonic! With this new tool, he quickly caught up with the others, and I decided we were ready for Mt. Moon.

(note, all LV 15 at this point)

Part 8: the first taste of evil

Heading in, I notice several girls that seem to be lost. After being forced to battle by them, they complain about their predicament. I offered to help them out(I mean seriously, the entrance's only a quarter of a mile away), but they stubornly say that they'd rather die then let a boy with braces save them. "Whatever," I reply, and move deeper into the cave.

The path is rather un-eventful, having some battles with hikers and a crazy scientist, however, that is short-lived. I soon come across the creep dressed in black. "Hey You!" he shouts, "Get out of here. Team Rocket has buisness here tonight."

"Surely they can put up with a teenager," I reply, fairly ticked off at his attitude. He seems outraged, and throws out his pokemon. I let Scortch take him on, and there was absolutely no problem. I made sure Scortch wasn't too hard on his pokemon, for fear they would end up like POWDER. He did everything as best he could, and it seemed like the first one was reviving as we walked away, so I was satisfied.

On the other hand, however, I was quite disturbed. This man had made Ian look like a loving father... What is this team Rocket anyway? I seem to remeber something from my life before being in this world, but it's slowly fading away. "It doesn't matter," I say to myself, " whoever they are, if they all act like that then they are unacceptable!"

I had the missfortune of running into a few more Rocket goons, who fall swiftly before my growing wrath. I continue, marveling at the rock formations and wild pokemon. Suddenly I notice some strange rocks, and move forward to attempt to examine them, however, before I get there this scientist comes forward and screams, "BACK AWAY!!! THEY'RE MINE!!!" He then engages me in a pokemon battle, and finds that poison has no effect on Dracula. After knocking his last pokemon out, or rather watching it knock itself out in confusion, I claim the Helix fossil and he takes the Dome fossil. The rest of Mt. Moon passes without incident.

Part 9: FEAR, in more ways than one

While I do love spelunking, the rays of the falling sun feel good to my cold hands. It looks like Scortch also likes the change, as he promptly lays back in enjoyment. I let the whole team out for a bit of relaxation, but we are soon on our way again, as I want to reach Cerulean City before dark. I think about attempting a capture in the patch of grass nearbye, and give it a go. Another Spearow shows up, at which point I have indecision about catching it. I already have two flying types already, why do I need another one, but in the end Flapper joined the team.

I continue fighting wild pokemon there, strengthening AirAce as we go, when all of a sudden a briliant light blinds me. I panic for a moment, but then remember Scortch evolving. That must be what's happening now, so I close my eyes and wait for the light to go away. When my eyes re-ajust, Pidgeotto is staring at itself, and I call, " AirAce," to make sure that it is indeed my precious pokemon. AirAce comes flying straight towards me, and stops itself with precision. I'm impressed, and glad to have my pokemon become stronger. I begin to think that nothing can beat us

However, I notice that the Gym's typing is Water, which sends a shock down my spine. I check my team, though I know them by heart, and find what I knew I would. No resists, so I would have to rely on Dracula's recently attained Bite move to take them down, but that didn't give me much confidence, so I decide to try to find a bellsprout, which I'm told live in route 24.

I start heading north, and promptly see a figure running towards me. I stop just incase he can't see me, but he stops in time. "Hey squirt, finally got here did ya?" Ian's anoyying voice broke the silence like a dying rabbit. "Well, I've caught myself some good pokemon. Let's see about you!" And with that we plunge into battle. Dracula is out in front, battling his Pidgeotto. After some bites and a Supersonic, I pull Dracula back, seeing that he wasn't being effective, and send out my own Pidgeotto.

"Well, at least I know you're working on them," comes Ian's mocking voice, which quickly turns into a gasp as my Pidgeotto Quick Attacks his to the point of fainting. He sends out ratata, into which JackieChan gladly switches. After laying some karate basics on the rat, out comes an Abra. I had to check my Pokedex for this one, I couldn't remember what it was. I smile as I see that the only move it knows right now is teleport, which is useless in battle, though useful outside of it, hmm... I might want one of those myself. Oh well, In comes Zubat who mops the floor with abra, and now it's down to his Squirtle. The only pokemon I have that's still at full health, due to this battle or prior training, is Chomper, so he comes out to take on Squirtle. At first we look even, everything going well.

But a crit in his favor turns that around, and I see that I will lose Ratata if he doesn't KO Squirtle next turn. I start to call him back, but then he turns and looks at me. There was no fear in his eyes, and he gives me a look that said clear as day, "Don't you dare." I back off, and then tell him to Hyper Fang. I know that he isn't completely accurate with this move, but I also know that it's the only way we'll win. Chomper does what he was named after, and hangs on for quite some time. I was on the verge of calling him off when he stopped. I saw squirtle still stood, and covered my eyes. I didn't want to see what was about to happen. I waited for the sound of ratata being blown backwards, but it never came. Risking a peak, I see squirtle, cowing and flinching in fear. Suddenly I have hope. "Quick Attack while it's still flinching Chomper!!" Chomper was clearly just waiting for the order, and gladly rammed into the squirtle, knocking it out and securing victory!

Part 10a: The Torrential gym, preperations

I couldn't believe that Chomper had pulled that out of his belt, and treated him to an exsuisite(or as fancy as you could get there) dinner, after healing him of course. We celebrated the victory all night, but when morning came, I had different things on my mind. It had been that hard to take down a water type, and we're about to go up against one. How in the world will we be able to pull this one out? I mull over this question as we wander around the city. I head north again, wondering if there's another route on the other side of the bridge. I am met by six trainers, actios for a battle. One after the other they have their butts handed to them by Dracula, Chomper, and JackieChan. I haven't used Flapper yet, because I haven't had the time to mass train him to my standards yet. The final trainer acts mysterious, handing me my prize, and then beconing me over to the side.

"How would you like to join Team Rocket, a criminal group that steals other people's pokemon." The very sound of the invitation disgusted me, and I lept back at the words. "Obviously you need some encouraging," He said, and we proceeded to battle. To be perfectly honest, he was a joke, and my guys had no problem finnishing him off. he tells me I'd be great for team Rocket, but mearly smirk and turn my back.

I then check the grass by the bridge, hoping for an answer to my water problem, and lo and behold, BELLSPROUT! I was overjoyed at the sight of a grass type, and nicknamed her Victoria. My worries were now releived, and I promptly took to training my pokemon. I wanted to traing Victoria first, but I reminded myself that I had promised Dracula to give it some more power first. Dracula took eargerly to the training, and learned a new move called Wing Attack. I now had no problems taking on the plant and bug infestation that covered the area, and his power rose quickly. Suddenly the light came again. This time I was expecting it, though that made it no less blinding. I look up, and Golbat(or so my pokedex tells me) is flying in front of me. As I go to train the rest of my team, I feel more confident than ever. Let's see just how well you'll do Misty!

any feedback on what I've done so far?

I think you've done well so far Lightsabre.

Anyway, I've been thinking about doing this on my Emerald game, though of course I'll have to export some things on my save file first.

Don't sign me up just yet though, in case I change my mind.

Edit: By the way Light, what happened to Part 11.

I might try this on Emerald, but I doubt it. I would get frustrated way too easy when I lose something because of a crit or things like that.

wow lol. I can't beleive I missed those. I'll edit them to have the correct numbers. and about the nickname, it is Scortch, even if that's not how it's really spelled.

Tleilax- things like crits can be acounted for. I have switched out more than once wgen I was in crit range, not regular hit range

Meet FISHY the piplup! Currently level 12 at just past the Oreburgh gym, and he had some tough spots too, I had gotten CORY's (Rival's) Tutwig down to -6 attack but he got 2 crits, Fishy survived with 2 HP left

FROMAN the Machop, met him right after I just got to Oreburgh, I was kinda hoping for Machop or the rare Ponyta, either would of worked, I used him to beat Oreburgh gym even though FISHY could of easily, I think Machop will be doing most of the fighting for me, currently level 14 after the gym

The first one caught right after Sandgem, PECK the Starly, I figured I would grab him for Fly and he could be useful after he evolves to Staraptor, he is currently doing good at level 10, I met an Abra right after I met him trying to level him up I wish so much I had met that Abra first, the rules prevented me from catching it though :/

So far, FISHY has the only close calls, everyone else has been doing good, I would really hate to lose FISHY or FROMAN, I wouldn't mind to much if PECK had to go, but he would still be missed for his awesome flying skills :(

R.I.P.

NO ONE! (Yet...)

Alright, chapters and stuff will be up tomorrow or later, including the rules I am using for the challenge.

I'm mostly doing the basic stuff, at least for my first playthrough: only the first pokemon in an area, has to be nicknamed and stay alive, no trading or day care (I'm not playing HGSS so no pokewalker anyway), all items allowed. I probably won't use legendaries and I don't normally purposely overlevel so I guess technically I am doing that rule too.

I really want to try the "no buying PokeBalls" or something similar also, maybe I'll do that on Yellow since I've just barely started and only have caught 1 pokemon so far. More interested in playing through Ruby right now though.

Can't decide how hard I want to try, this is pretty new for me lol. I doubt I would make it far if I did like no healing items + limited Pokecenter, I'm currently doing unlimited both (yeah what a dork)

Anyway my current team with unoriginal nicknames:

PIKDUM the level 16 Marshtomp (need to find the name rater...)
HSIMOORHS the level 16 Shroomish
RUMSIHW the level 14 Whismur
WHISMUR2 the level 10 Whismur (yeah I found another one somewhere else :( )
TABUZ the level 13 Zubat
PRAKIGAM the level 7 Magikarp (boxed right now because I don't want to train for 13 levels and Gyarados isn't too good early anyway)

Dead:
NOOGAZGIZ the level ~7 Zigzagoon

I'm currently training in the cave at Dewford to get ready for the gym

Starting my Emerald Nuzlocke Challenge, using the following rules:
  • 1. If a pokémon in my party faints, I must release or put it in a box labeled "Dead" as soon as possible.
  • 1a. If all the pokémons in my party faint, I can make a new party with pokémons that are waiting in the PC. If there are no pokémons in the PC, the game is over.

  • 2. The battle type will be SET - no switching out after defeating an enemy trainer's pokémon.

  • 3. I can only catch the first pokémon I encounter in an area (an area being something that has its own name on the map). This only applies after I get my first five pokeballs.
  • 3a. If I already have a pokémon of the same species as the first pokémon I encounter in an area, I can ignore that encounter.
  • 3b. Pokémon that are given, traded or obtained in any way other than in the wild don't count (they must come from the game though).
  • 3c. As far as Legendaries go, I will buy several ultra balls and try to catch it for real, however, I cannot use it in this playthrough.

  • 4. I will nickname all my pokémons.

  • 5. I can buy one item per shop I visit. Apart from that, I can only use items I find in the wild, or that are given to me, including pokéballs of any kind.
  • 5a. Items cannot be used inside of a battle, and I am only permitted to use HP healing items [potions, super potions, etc.] outside of battle, however, healing items can be given to pokemon to hold for use in battle.

  • 6. I will not use the Daycare center.

  • 7. Usage of HM's is unlimited, but I can only use one TM per pokemon.

Basically, the same rules as Accent, only slightly modified.

Okay then, let's get started:

The Prologue: The Beginning of a Strange Adventure.

Darkness....

"maxim..." calls a voice from seemingly everywhere.

"What the...who's there" I mumble.
"I am... I am the master of your fate..."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You'll soon see, prepare for an experience like no other!"
"Who are you...Ahhhhhhhh!" *THUMP!*

After that strange experience, I wake up after slamming on the floor of, a truck! I don't remember sleeping in a truck, am I being abducted?! Then, my pain from taking a fall onto a wooden floor comes back to me. I see a light coming from the outside, and I see, to my shock, a small town that looks eerily familiar...

"So, did you have a nice trip, Sean?" says a lady I've never met before.

I was still in a bit of a daze from the strange dream, but I say "yep".
"Well, we have arrived in Littleroot Town, It's a quaint place, don't you think?"

I am then struck with the realization that I've been transported into one of the 3rd Generation Pokemon games, the headband I'm wearing tells me I'm in Emerald.

"Let's go inside, shall we?" I reluctantly nod in agreement, and find that Vigoroth are moving furniture into the house. My "Mom" tells me to set my clock, and I obey, still not sure what the heck I've gotten myself into. I also check the PC and find a potion, score. I go downstairs, and after a brief TV show, am shoved out the door and told to go to Prof. Birch's lab.

"Well, that was odd" I said to myself.

Chapter One: A new Pokemon, and a new trip.

I went to both houses, and found that Birch was out on fieldwork, great. In the second house, a girl told me to meet with her daughter. Instead of her daughter though, I find a pokeball. "I guess this must be my starter..." no sooner had I said this than a girl, presumably the daughter poped out of nowhere and...

"THIEF!". I sure don't recall her saying that in the games. Lucky for me her mother was a more sensible person, and said that I was just visiting. "Oh..." she said, clearly embarrased at the situation. "Well, it's nice to meet you, I'm May" she stated. I departed before the conversation became stranger than it already was.

After leaving, I went out near a suspicious-looking piece of grass, when suddenly...

"HELP!!!!!!"

This guy in a lab coat was being attacked by a Zigzagoon, and he yells at me to pick a pokemon from his bag. I mull over the options, Torchic was a good fire type, and good ones are hard to find early in the game, Mudkip evolves with a nice typing and movepool, and Treeko is a good grass type, but it's moves aren't so good without the physical/special split. Eventually, I decide on Mudkip, and just in time too, the Zigzagoon in this game are apparently a lot more vicious than I previously imagined, as this one was gleefully trying to bite his leg off.

I send out the Mudkip, and easily defeat the fiendish Zigzagoon.

"Thank you, I was caught without my pokemon, so I thought I was going to be one of the Eliminated."

"The Eliminated?" I ask.
"err...Hi, you must be Sean." that was abrupt.

"Well, as thanks for rescuing me, I'll let you keep the pokemon."
"Thanks." Then he asks "Would you like to name your pokemon."

"No Thanks, I'm not very good with names."
"err...What do you wish to nickname him." I was getting the feeling these people weren't listening to me, but I respond "Tide".

"Good, why don't you talk to May and have her show you the basics." I already knew the basics, but I knew he wouldn't listen to me, so I followed his instructions.

Well, I head up the route I went to earlier, and started talking to Tide. "So...you probably won't believe me, but I'm not supposed to be here so much." The Mudkip listens patiently, and seems to believe me. He then starts sounding off his name. That's going to be annoying. I arrive in Oldale town.

So, that's the end of that, how do you guys like it, should I make more, or should I give up?

I just got HeartGold today and I want to mix up my usual play-through style so this seems like a great idea. I'm the kind of person who really likes a challenge so I'll be going all out just to see if I can do it.

-Faint=Release
-Only catch first Pokemon encountered in each area
-Nicknames
-Healing items in battle only
-No stat or level boosting items
-Set style of battle
-Items (poke balls, potions etc...) cannot be purchased
-No legendary's
-No grinding

I will post updates in this thread. What do you guys think? Any suggestions for additional rules?

wow lol. I can't beleive I missed those. I'll edit them to have the correct numbers. and about the nickname, it is Scortch, even if that's not how it's really spelled.

Considering the luck I have playing these games I couldn't account for ANYTHING. Here is a transcription from my battle with Clair in HG. We are both on our last, and I have no Revives left. I have been hit with Smokescreen once and am paralyzed. The Dragonair is one hit from death.

Dragonair used Dragon Pulse (it takes 3 to kill me).
Kangaskhan used Strength. It missed!

This challenge looked great so I just had to try it out on my Fire Red. :)

I'm using moot's rules with variations. Firstly, I will only buy Pokeballs from Pokemarts, no ultra/great balls and only if I need them. I'm still undecided on items in and after battle. So far I haven't needed them so far but during the later stages (the elite 4) I may need them :/.

Also, I am nicknaming all my Pokemon but as I have named them after friends I won't list the names here.

Anyways, onto the challenge :)

At the start of the game I chose Bulbasaur, for a few reasons. Firstly, Bulbasaur is immune to early game poisoning, being a poison type itself. It is also super effective against the first two gyms, making it a great help for the early game.

Bulbasaur has an impish nature :/ -Special Attack but it means it'll be bulkier, so I guess its ok.

The first battle with my rival was easy thanks to Bulbasaurs bulky stats and I breezed through the Oak's Parcel part fairly quick. After that, I went onto Route 22, hoping for a Mankey but unfortunately I only got a rash Rattata. :/

After leveling Rattata up a bit, I went to face my rival (named Fool btw, I wasn't feeling too creative.) He was easy due to his Charmander not having ember yet and his Pidgey not having Gust :).

Anyways after that I caught a Pidgey on Route 2 and a Weedle in Viridian Forest, however whilst leveling him, a Rattata's Tackle ended his short life. RIP Weedle :(

After Viridian Forest I breezed through Brock with Bulbasaur's Vine Whip and following the battle it evolved into Ivysaur.

Not much has happened since then, other than catching a Jigglypuff as death fodder for later. I'm in Mount Moon now and Pidgey is about to evolve. :D

My Team:

Ivysaur level 16 - Vine Whip, Tackle, Sleep Powder, Leech Seed

Pidgey level 17 - Tackle, Gust, Sand Attack, Quick Attack

Rattata level 14 - Tackle, Quick Attack, Hyper Fang, Tail Whip

Jigglypuff level 3 - Sing

Will update soon

EDIT: updates may be erratic depending on what im doing/how much time i spend playing other games

aww yeah i'm doing this.

with blue, although yellow would be nice as a trial run. may use the video thing on my computer to put it on youtube.

also the D/L thing in the OP doesn't work for me.

Started over my SS to do this challenge...
for the first time I can remember, my starter pokemon fainted on one of the first routes. And all it took was a weedle and a ledyba, to boot. So, I'll be editing this once I have a little more momentum going.

Is anyone doing this while using the items you find? Without items at all is way too hard, so I guess using the ones you pikc up would be fair. I'm hoping to start it on either gen 1, 2 or 3 games. Diamond I may attempt but it's way too slow for my liking.
Pretty much yeah. I got sick of poison stings 100% poison rate on my squirtle but I lost anyways.

Lol... the game really wants me to lose...
I get the Treecko, level 5, against a level 2 Zigzagoon.

Treecko uses pound!
Zigzagoon uses Tackle! Critical Hit!
Treecko uses pound!
Zigzagoon uses Tackle! Critical Hit!
Treecko uses pound! (1 more to death)
Zigzagoon uses Tackle!
Zigzagoon consumed it's Oran Berry! (...)

At the end of the battle, my Treecko had 2 life left, 1 hit to death.

Right i'm starting one on Ruby later today, my friend is starting it on Emerald at the same time. Then i'll start on either Diamond or HG (If I start again).

Most of the way through Nuzlockeing Fire Red as part of a race with BB and Sledge, got really lucky and got a Pikachu in Viridian forest first Pokemon to go with my Squirtle (and it did not kill me), beat brock with friend the squirtle, OHKOed everything misty had with Lv. 26 Mew the Pikachu, Lt. Surge was tough, damn Hyper Potions+Double Team, but the Mega Punch and Kick tutors gave me something to hit him hard with. Went back and killed a stupid number of bugs searching for a Pikachu with Light Ball to use Thief on, finally got one. Then pretty much swept everyone up to the last Giovanni battle where I am now with Pika and Blast. Had a couple of deaths, a rattata at Lv. 3 and a Diglett that was entirely my fault.. I poisoned it to catch it, then it died of poison... :'(
