List of most common misconceptions

People should really pay more attention to move power calculations instead of using NVE/SE attack messages to gauge the usefulness of a move.

Gay psypokes is gay

Anyways I messed up on the damage calc but Isn't a counter something that can switch in on most moves and pose a threat?

Do most tyranitar not use stone edge for some reason?

I never said Champ was a counter. That post was in response to "name a fighting type that can switch in on ttar and OHKO"

Hmm...it still hasn't been mentioned (might have accidentally overlooked a post).

Another common misconception is that the Burn status will still lower Attack on a Guts Pokemon. The truth is that Guts Pokemon neither suffer nor nullify the drop; they get that 1.5x boost.

Okay, back to the real conversation. *points up*

I tried using chatter multiple times on a amnesia slowbro, and it didn't even confuse once out of 4 attempts. I tried again with a different yell and it still failed to confuse.

Slowbro has Own Tempo which prevents confusion.

Does Breloom switch in easily? Resists Quake/Slide/Crunch and can use Sky Uppercut and Spore.

One misconception that i see every now and then is that a pokemon team should cover ALL and have no weaknesses.

your team will have some weak spots and you can not cover every single weakness, and i see people that take 2 weeks or more to make a them because they sit there and go no this team sucks against garchomp or someone else honestly make a fricken team then alter it as you go along and see weaknesses but again there are times you have to make a choice of which weakness to cover.

The greatest misconception I've encountered, is "Pikachu is crap."

LOL...I have made so many people suffer for that one. =D

Other misconception is that Light Ball doubles Pikachu's Attack. ¬_¬

Pikachu's attack IS doubled in this generation while holding a Light Ball.
Which makes pikachu quite funny to use :-D

Thats easy.

Intimidate Hitmontop, one of the highest defense Intimidators, resists both Crunch/Stone Edge. It pretty much lol's at EQ with Intimidate if you got the EV's right. Mach Punch is an easy 2HKO off only 240 atk thanks to the STAB (Regions of 70% damage to be more accurate) while Revenge or Hi-Jump Kick is a definite OHKO.

Boltbeam Tyraniboah is a joke as far as Hitmontop is concerned since it can't even scratch its awesome special defense.

Pikachu's attack IS doubled in this generation while holding a Light Ball.

See, misconception, right there.

Not only does the game text say "A mysterious orb that doubles Pikachu's Sp.Attk," but I've tested it myself and see no boost at all. It was a rumour started by a Japanese source as far as I know.

I use a physical light ball pika and it does double attack,i tested it early to make sure, could a tranferred light ball not? or a transferred pika not get the boost, both my ball and pika were bred in diamond

common misconception:

the game's text is infallible, the things stated in-game are the only effects that a move/ability/status can have.

like for example, nothing in the current sandstorm text mentions anything about giving rock type pokemon a 1.5x boost in their special defense. the players had to test it out themselves, thus revealing the travesty and utter bunk-ness of Sandstorm TTar Teams.

I guess this is a misconception of mine: SPP's description of Trick Room says: slower pokemon attack first in 5 turns. So I thought it took five turns and then the slowest pokemon on that turn struck first. I was really wondering before why people were basing teams around it.

A newbie misconception (usually if you begin to learn EVs and competitive battling): Shuckle is a wall and is really good. I used to think that (I actually had it on my team when I won my first tournament ingame) and I know so many people who do. It's defenses are sooo high lol (who cares if its HP sucks).

SkarmBliss is not invincible.
Garchomp, Gyarados, Salamence, Tyranitar are not invincible.
Weavile, Heracross and Infernape leads are not unbeatable.

Everyone seems to use them, no doubt thinking they are the best in the game, and I know some people can't stand fighting them.

SkarmBliss is ruined now basically, since Skarmory can pe pwnt straight through his physical defences anyway and the physical/special split means Skarm isn't so hard to beat down.
Neither is Blissey, Close Combat fixes that little problem.

Garchomp, Salamence, Gyarados and Tyranitar are all standard pokemon since they have pretty good stats and a decent standard moveset to put on them, but they aren't invincible. A Boltbeamer with some decent defences can shoot down Garchomp, Salamence and Gyarados - Porygon2 for example, with Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Recover would work quite nicely, if you wanted to make him a novelty pokemon, breed for HP Fighting and counter Tyanitar at the same time too. >_>

Weavile, Heracross and Infernape - the 3 most common leads (followed by Metagross and Breloom from what I can gather) all have crap all defences, any pokemon with a decent defence stat and nice attack or special attack will counter them right off the bat. A Kingler lead could counter them all at the same time, with Rock Slide.. Crabhammer should go on him too, since it can't get Waterfall.

Tell that to Focus Sash Weavile. . .

Focus Sash away, Kingler will take the hit and OHKO.

That's my bet, anyway.. too.. "occupied" right now to be bothered checking on a damage calculator.

Weavile is no longer a popular lead. Neither is Infernape or Heracross. More leads are focused around Metagross / Breloom / Gallade / Swampert / Bronzong, all which crap all over on Kingler. Why'd you use Kingler in the first place I don't know

According to Metalkids, Kingler (0 Def / 4 HP) can take a Swords Danced Night Slash from Weavile and survive with 10% health before Leftovers, so it could definitly kill it on the second turn.

That is, depending on if a Kingler can 2HKO a Weavile. And Brick Break is an OHKO on Weavile before Focus Sash, so Kingler is a decent enough lead to stop Weavile. Not so much against the other leads though I don't think, I doubt they have a 4x Weak that's so easily exploitable.

Edit: COOO-KEEEEEE! :P Kingler is pretty cool, I'll admit that.

The thing is, it's pointless using Kingler if it's only meant to counter Weavile. Besides, have you seen any Weavile leads on any team yet?

The more I read this thread the more I think that maybe some of you should be reading it instead of posting in it.

The more I skim through this thread the more I have the feeling Synre is right. I said COMMON misconceptions. I didn't say solve dense SPP-Guests image that Lucario should only be using Pulse moves sheez christ. These are more things that people tend to fall for when they're into competitive battling a bit, but apparently yet not far enough.

CoolTrainer20 made one of the most worthwhile posts here, I'll add his suggestion definitely. Brick Break on Normal and Ground types is a very good example, and so is Rock Slide on Slaking and stuff, though it's been covered before.

I've seen a Focus Sash Weavile lead (granted, I've only battled about 5 times on Wi-Fi).
