BlueStar's Original Thread
[Overview]

Shelmet is an often-overlooked Pokemon, mainly due to its typing, which gives it a weakness to Stealth Rock, as well as its poor offensive stats. However, Shelmet has amazing 50 / 85 / 65 defensive stats, as well as access to some useful support moves such as Encore, Spikes, Recover, and Yawn. Its typing, while giving it nasty weaknesses, also grants it excellent resistances to Fighting-, Ground-, and Grass-type attacks, allowing it to set up on some threats.

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Recover
move 3: Yawn / Toxic
move 4: Bug Buzz / Protect
item: Eviolite
ability: Shell Armor
nature: Calm
evs: 116 HP / 236 Def / 156 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

With its natural bulk and resistances, Shelmet can be an effective support Pokemon. It can switch into Fighting-types lacking Stone Edge, such as Timburr, Mienfoo, and others, and set up Spikes; this is the main move on this set, racking up damage when the foe switches. Recover is an interesting move, allowing Shelmet to heal itself from weak attacks in order to get more layers. The third moveslot is for status. Yawn can be used to give more free turns, but Toxic cripples defensive
Pokemon and can be used with Recover to stall the foe to death. There are two options for the last moveslot. Protect can be used to scout the opponent's move and works well with Toxic. On the other hand, Bug Buzz can be used to prevent Shelmet from becoming complete Taunt bait, giving it a strong STAB option to smack foes with.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EVs provide Shelmet
with an odd number in HP, meaning that it can enter a field with Stealth Rock five times instead of four, while the Defense EVs reach the highest even number, giving a jump with Eviolite. The remaining EVs are placed in Special Defense. Eviolite is the recommended item here because it makes Shelmet significantly bulkier; this is needed in order to set up Spikes, and works well with Recover.

Pokemon which benefit from Spikes are good partners to Shelmet. Tentacool is an interesting partner because it can spin away Stealth Rock, which mauls Shelmet, and also give Toxic Spikes support so that Shelmet can stall its foes better. Ghost-types such as, Duskull are great team options too because they can block attempts to spin Shelmet's Spikes.

[Other Options]

Hidden Power Fire allows Shelmet to 2HKO Ferroseed, who would normally set up on Shelmet, but has little use otherwise. It's also worth noting that Shelmet can learn Baton Pass, and can aid its team further by passing Curse or Acid Armor.

[Checks and Counters]

Because Shelmet generally uses no attacking moves, Pokemon with Taunt can easily set up on it. Toxic also proves to be very dangerous, because it really hinders Shelmet's staying power. Entry hazards will also cause trouble because Shelmet is susceptible to every form of them and is weak to Stealth Rock. It also has exploitable weaknesses in Rock-, Fire-, and Flying-type attacks, meaning that
Pokemon such as Taillow, Houndour, and Darumaka can easily OHKO with their STAB attacks.

[Dream World]

Shelmet gets Overcoat as its Dream World ability. It's useful since Hippopotas and Snover are common, and not taking damage from hail or sandstorm is nice.

With its natural bulk and resistances, Shelmet can be an effective support Pokemon. It can switch into Fighting-types lacking Stone Edge, such as Timburr, Mienfoo, and others, and set up Spikes; this
that will greatly aid your team. Spikes is the main move on this set, racking up damage when the foe switches. Recover is an interesting move, allowing that allows Shelmet to heal itself from weak attacks in order to get more layers. The third moveslot is for status. Yawn can be used to give more free turns, but Toxic cripples defensive Pokémon and can be used with Recover to stall the foe to death. There are two options for the last moveslot. Protect can be used to scout the opponent's move and works well in general with Toxic. On the other hand, Bug Buzz can be used to prevent Shelmet from becoming complete Taunt bait, and also giving it a strong STAB option to smack foes with.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EVs provide the last odd HP number for Shelmet, meaning that it can enter a field with Stealth Rock five times instead of four, while the Defense EVs reach the highest even number, giving a jump with Eviolite. The remaining EVs are placed in Special Defense
are there to reach the last even number (in order to get a stat jump with Eviolite), as well as the Special Defense EVs. Eviolite is the recommended item here because it makes Shelmet significantly bulkier; this is needed in order to set up Spikes, and works well with Recover, which it will need.

Pokemon which benefit from Spikes are good partners to Shelmet. Carvanha is an excellent example
partner for Shelmet; it covers Shelmet's Fire-type weakness, while Shelmet covers its Fighting- and Grass-type weaknesses. Carvanha appreciates also loves Spikes because they grant it OHKOs it otherwise could not achieve, with them, it gets many OHKOs that it couldn't achieve otherwise. Tentacool is another interesting partner because it can spin away Stealth Rock, which that mauls Shelmet, and also give Toxic Spikes support so that Shelmet can stall its foes better. Duskull and Misdreavus are great team options too because they can block attempts to spin Shelmet's Spikes.

[Other Options]

Hidden Power Fire allows Shelmet to 2HKO Ferroseed, who would normally set up on Shelmet, but has little use otherwise. It's also worth noting
to note that Shelmet can learn Baton Pass, and can aid its team further by passing Curse or Acid Armor.

[Checks and Counters]

Because Shelmet generally uses no attacking moves, Pokemon with Taunt can easily set up on it. This means that Taunt + Nasty Plot Misdreavus can use Shelmet as setup fodder. Toxic also proves to be very dangerous, because it really hinders Shelmet's staying power. That was actually the second set since C_P did the first one on the Original thread.

Thank You. This is now done.

I was in the middle of doing a check (should have posted, I know), so I ended up refreshing into some new mistakes.
