[SET COMMENTS]

Heatran is a Pokemon that can force out many different Pokemon with its high Special Attack as well as its useful resistances, and this set aims to abuse those free turn to set up a Substitute. This lets it take down swich-(add dash)ins without relying on guesswork: for example, being able to set up a Substitute when the opponent has both a Terrakion and a Landorus means that Heatran doesn't have to predict to take down KO a Pokemon. Substitute also helps Heatran by avoiding being able to get revenge killed, as now Pokemon such as the aforementioned Landorus and Terrakion will only be able to break its Substitute and get KOed by the appropriate attack afterwards.

Substitute along with Toxic also lets Heatran cripple other common switch-(add dash)ins into Heatran that would otherwise easily wall it. The likes of Jellicent, Rotom-W, and Dragonite all resist Fire Blast and aren't bothered by Earth Power, but Toxic is able to can cripple them and possibly even lets Heatran take them down. Using Substitute means another round of poison damage and after a Substitute or two, Fire Blast or Earth Power can 2HKO. Heatran also makes for a good Toxic user in general, as it is able to take down most Toxic immunes with STAB Fire Blast and Earth Power which lets it take down Steel- and Poison-types.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Timid is the chosen nature, as this lets Heatran outrun standard Gyarados and Dragonite and take them down with a combination of Toxic and Substitute. Special Attack is maximized to make Heatran as threatening as possible, but a bulkier spread can also work. If you decide to use such a spread, take the EVs from Special Attack and not from Speed as the ability to outrun Gyarados and Dragonite and speedtie with other Heatran is too valuable. Roar can replace Toxic on SpikeStacking teams as the entry hazard damage can pile up quickly, but being able to cripple common switchins is usually preferred. Will-O-Wisp is another option in the last slot as it halves the Attack of Dragonite and Gyarados, but Toxic is mostly superior as it can't be stalled out with Recover or Roost, as well as having superior accuracy.

Because two of the most common switchins into Heatran—Politoed and Tyranitar—are weather starters and also worn down by Toxic, this set functions excellently on sand and sun teams as Heatran really greatly helps with winning the weather war. Having Politoed or Tyranitar poisoned puts a timer on it, and along with Substitute and Heatran outspeeding both of these Pokemon, means that weather war will eventually be won if the own weather starter isn't taken down. Heatran also pairs well with Pokemon that appreciate bulky Waters being poisoned, and Dragonite is a good example of that. Dragon Dance Dragonite is able to set up on poisoned Water-types while Toxic wears them down and puts them in Dragon Claw or Outrage range. It's worth noting that there are two Water-types that don't mind Toxic, namely Starmie and Hydration Vaporeon. As such, a teammate that can deal with those Pokemon makes for a good teammate, and Rotom-W and Ferrothorn are some of the best options for that.

Heatran is a Pokemon that can force out many different Pokemon with its high Special Attack as well as its and useful resistances, and this set aims to make use of those free turns to set up a Substitute. This lets it take down switch-ins that can outspeed and KO it, such as Terrakion and Landorus, without relying on guesswork. For example, having a Substitute up when facing an opponent with Pokemon who would usually be able to outspeed and KO Heatran, such as Terrakion and Landorus, means that Heatran doesn't have to predict correctly to take down the Pokemon. (this said the exact same thing as the previous sentence but in a much more convoluted way, so I got rid of it and added the example into the previous sentence) Substitute also makes it harder for your opponent to revenge kill Heatran, as now Pokemon, such as the aforementioned Landorus and Terrakion, will only be able to revenge kill Heatran if they can break its Substitute and not get OHKOed by any of Heatran's attacks. Heatran harder to revenge kill, as Pokemon have to break its Substitute without being OHKOed by any of its attacks. (yeah, this was way too needlessly wordy to the point that the sentence sounded really bad)

(also I merged the paragraphs because they were both pretty short after my liposuction lol) Substitute along with Toxic allows Heatran to cripple other common switch-ins to Heatran that would otherwise easily wall it, including Jellicent, Rotom-W, and Dragonite. Using Substitute means (again, the first sentence covers everything the second sentence said in a much less wordy way) Using Substitute means Using Substitute makes the opponent take another round of poison Toxic damage,(comma) and after a Substitute or two, few turns, either Fire Blast or Earth Power can 2HKO.
