Monday Night Wi-Fi Battle. Tricky(Fate) vs. MoFro: Trick(y)Room MAYHAM!

TrickyFate here again with my 3rd Warstory. After many losses and wins, some more embarrassing than others. I'm back with another recount of a close battle.

This one is between TrickyFate(that's me!) and MoFro.
Eager to test out my newly finished trained Spiritomb, I go looking for match. So I pick 5 more members for this pick-up group and head for a fight.

For purposes of flow and condensation, I ignored mentioning the recovery of leftovers/spikes damage unless they were imo important. Most of the time, the % listed unless otherwise stated is after all global effects were applied.
I'm doing this as accurately as possible. I give myself a 95% accuracy rating!

DISCLAIMER: TrickRoom ALWAYS go last, so if you think the turn order was weird in the turn before and after TrickRoom was done, its not. That's how it was.

Fate sent in Spiritomb "GO SPIRITBOMB!(nickname)"
MoFro sent in Dusknoir

Turn 1:

Spiritomb used Hypnosis
Dusknoir feel asleep!
Dusknoir's Lum Berry cured it of Sleep
Dusknoir used Trick Room!

The dimensions around the room got twisted

Nothing scatters your joy faster than a lum berry messing up that leap of faith hypnosis move. Not only that, but it looks like I be fighting a TrickRoom room team. Interesting. I accept your challenge!

Turn 2:

Spiritomb used Hypnosis, it missed!
Dusknoir used Taunt!
Spiritomb fell for the taunt!

My try at another hypnosis fails and Dusknoir taunts me for my miss. That meanie..
TrickRoom is a ALWAYSLAST priority move, so this is why my Spiritomb went first on the turn it was used and after. You see this happen again often thruout this warstory.

Turn 3:

Dusknoir is tightening its Focus!
Spiritomb used Pursuit! (Dusknoir 80%)
Dusknoir used Focus Punch...
DUsknoir lost its Focus

Refusing to switch, I see I made the right choice and dodge his focus punch. With Pursuit, he's deadlocked. Looks like it be a slugfest.

Turn 4:

Dusknoir is tighening its Focus!
Spiritomb used Pursuit! Its a critical hit! (Dushnoir 40%)
Dusknoir used Focus Punch...
Dusknoir lost its Focus

Guess like me, its the only attack move its got.

Turn 5:

Dusknoir is tightening its Focus!
Spiritomb used Pursuit! (Dusknoir, 20%)
Dusknoir used Focus Punch...
Dusknoir lost its Focus

Going to score an early lead next turn..

Turn 6:

Dusknoir used Destiny Bond!
Spiritomb used Pursuit! Its a Critical Hit! (Dusknoir, 0%)
Dusknoir takes its foe with it!
Spiritomb faints

5-5

The dimensions around the room goes back to normal

Ouch. I thought MoFro was quite mean here, I wanted to try my Spiritomb more..oh well. One TrickRoomer down, how many more does he have left.
Lets be safe and send out a neutral pokemon to scout his next move.

Turn 9:

Mofro withdraws Jirachi
Mofro sent in Rhyperior

Porygon2 used Tri-Attack! It's a critical hit!(Rhyperior, 40%)

After 2 Thunderbolts, no way was I gonna fall into his prediction. And I'm awarded by taking a good chuck of the dangerous Rhyperior. I thought it was interesting how he switched directly instead of U-Turning, guess he didn't want his Jirachi to take a T-Bolt, and thought he save two birds with one stone.

Turn 10:

Rhyperior used Earthquake! (Porygon2, 25%)
Porygon2 used IceBeam (Rhyperior, 0%)

5-4

Pretty cool that P2 can take a STABBED Earthquake here..good thing it wasn't LifeOrb'd or Choice-Band'd. And he sends in that annoying Blissey to take its place.

Fate sent in Skarmory
Machamp used CrossChop (Skarmory 80%)

Turn 26:

Swampert used Earthquake! (Blissey 55%)

Blissey's Sing seems to hit me more than Hypnosis..TrickRoom #3 ends.

Turn 27:

A quickswitch is in order here.

4-4

Fate sent in Regi-Rock(30-35%)

Will I make it?

Regi-Rock used EXPLOSION!

SlowBro and Regi-Rock fainted!

3-3

Fate sent in Swampert(60%)
MoFro sent in Blissey (SR+Spikes damage) (40%)

BOOM! Take that. I yelled out something naughty when the SlowBro IceBeam'd first thinking I was done for. Then I was like hurrah, when it left me enough to blow up SlowBro's face. Well, its payback for when he DestinyBond'd my Spiritbomb..3-3, we're tied and we're approaching the climax. I predicted right in think he send out Blissey. And that is the end of this one warstory. Was pretty head to head thruout most of the matched. Was decided on timing and control. Afterall, the biggest thing in getting a TrickRoom team to work from a tactical standpoint is constant control and awareness. That is also one of the ways to beat one.

PROS: Interesting TrickRoom team. Porygon2 going his part. Swellow saving the day again.

CONS: Pretty good match the whole way. Critd Frozen Skarmory was annoying, but I try to factor the bad stuff into my plans. I always try to have a backup plan when I know I'm gonna take an icebeam or switch into an IcePunch knowing that it can and will freeze me over and screw me up.

Random Thought: I need to stop writing these late at night when I have work in 5 hours! Formatting it into a readable manner and commentary takes alot longer than I expected..

(Missing Turns Added in!)

First reply.
EDIT: Finished reading it. It was very well written. I held my breath til the end, lol.
Swellow came through again, eh? I guess it's time to free my Swellow from its pokeball prison and let it take a breath of fresh air.

Swellow: "SWELLOW! (I don't know how the hell its roar sounds like lol) THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION TRICKY!"

Nice warstory. Well written and humorous too :D. I loled at the American Idol comments, made the warstory even more entertaining. Nice using P2, Trace is awesomely helpful a lot of the time.

I loathe American Idol with a passion, but you made good usage of it. :B

Every time I read a warstory with Swellow tearing it up it makes me want to use him more and more.

Haha, I've battled MoFro right before you and tasted that "tricky power"

Congratulations Tricky, it was a nice battle and a nice Warstory.

Nice.

Porygon 2 is awesome. Of course I didn't realize it was P2 until you were doing pitiful damage to Blissey. The Trace didn't give it away, nor did all the recovers.

Swellow is also awesome. Except it fails compared to Staraptor. Also, what would you have done he had CM Jirachi or ..... I can't think of any slow Special Sweepers..... I think three Trick Roomers was his down fall. He had nothing to stop a fast sweeper on the downtime.

First off great warstory, second of all...
068-3.png

Turn 35:

Machamp used Cross Chop! (Porygon2, 0%, faints)(LifeOrb'd 70%)

STABBED CrossChops is one thing P2 can't stand up to.
Why did he use Cross chop instead of Dynamich punch, and if he had guts, then why not Close combat?

Great story. I was glad to see succesful Trick Room team, it surely wasn't easy to win that one. In factg, if your team had 1-2 faster guys you'd probably have lost. Pory2 and Swampert/Skarmory really saved the day.

I need to ask, though, doesn't Swellow have anything better than Facade to use against Jirachi? Not sure on his movepool, and I know Facade is twice-gutsed + STAB, hitting really hard for a NVE move, but maybe there's something else?

Thanks for the war story, Tricky!

A few things:

@nihilus: Yeah, Ursaring was great but Machamp was more versatile - also I was at first thinking of doing a Guts Machamp like my Guts Ursaring, but ended up opting for No Guard anyway (because I was tired of breeding and got a good one). Besides, Flame Orb hurts you more than Life Orb does, and it hurts you when you switch in also if it's already on. I might get another Machamp or try Ursaring out with a different move set, but we'll see.

@The Man...tyke: My Machamp is still level 40 - Dynamicpunch is still in the cards for when I have time to level him up that extra bit, lol. I think Dynamicpunch could have helped to finish off Regirock in those lost 4-5 turns, so that's going to be #1 priority for me now.

@Hyra: Jirachi is actually speed EV'd to outspeed some things (but not everything obviously) and when I have to go without Trick Room for a bit he's useful for flinchhax and staying alive with Wish. In this battle Jirachi got burned pretty early on so I couldn't really make use of that, so that did cripple a major part of my team.

Also, I wanted to note that the HP levels on my Machamp were wrong there toward the end - he went in with 45%, took about 15-20% Spikes/SR damage, leaving him about 25%, and then two Life Orb hits had him down to 17 HP or so at the end before Swellow protected... it was really that close.

Rhyperior got Critical Hit by Tri-Attack or else it would never have done 70% damage. XD

Also, this is the 3rd or so battle where Focus Punch failed out loud, so it's going to be Night Shade from now on. =)

Tricky I'll send revisions in PM. Thanks for the awesome battle! That was great fun.

Swellow doesn't exactly have the most extensive of movepools, but he can get Brave Bird through breeding, as well as Pursuit (although I doubt Pursuit and Brave Bird is a legal combination).

Swellow doesn't exactly have the most extensive of movepools, but he can get Brave Bird through breeding, as well as Pursuit (although I doubt Pursuit and Brave Bird is a legal combination).
It's legal. Dotrio can learn Brave bird by eggmove, and pursuit by level up. And there in the same egg group.

I'm trying to remember exactly where those turns went. Didn't Porygon2 switch in on Slowbro and trace Oblivious at some point?... then I think I switched to Blissey... I can't remember lol

Also I'm pretty sure I sent in Jirachi again after Rhyperior fainted, to restore Trick Room and send out Machamp. I think the lost turns were in there somewhere.

But the first part and last part of the battle were pretty much spot on

Also don't underestimate STAB Guts 2xPower Facade from anything. I 2HKO just about anything that moved with my Ursaring using that combo.

Props to you for such good trick room counting! I suck at things like that (even remembering sleep talk when I rested), but at least twice in that match you timed it very well :-)

Dushnoir used Trick Room!
DUsknoir lost its Focus
Found a typo early on, still reading, looks good though

EDIT: Ok i finished reading it. It was great. I liked the referance to american idol, i lol'd

I'm guessing then Protect/Facade/Brave Bird/Pursuit would be the best moveset for Swellow? If yes, Facade is indeed the most damaging move to Jirachi.

Pursuit vs. Facade on the switch.
Lets look at it this way. I'm a little rough about how damage is done..but..

Pursuit on the switch: 80bp Dark Attack(most things that switch from Swellow imo are usually 60%hp+ and slower

Facade on the pokemon switching in(burned): 140bp w/Stab (210BP)

Even if the thing switching in was resistant to normal attacks, Facade would be about around 105BP I think, so damage-wise, the Facade is better. Guess it depends on if you want to hit the switcher, or the one to take its place.

U-Turn does have its nice uses though. Does the lowest damage out of BraveBird/Facade, but it takes a decent chuck of HP off the lowerdefense stat pokemon and get a switch without feeling like you lost a turn. Good set-up for the counter that you U-Turn'd away from. Also saves BurnDamage turns.

What's also interesting is that when one would send in a Tyranitar, U-Turn brings it to just about 40-45%. So if your in a tight spot in the lategame of a match, you can U-Turn away and hope it doesn't pursuit, send in something to sacrifice, and U-Turn or Facade again to kill it.

U-Turn seems definitely better than Pursuit, then. Aside from cases where you want a pokémon to stay trapped in, Brave Bird/Facade is better. Brave Bird hits ghosts for 180 while a SE Pursuit on the switch-out caps at 160. Nice.

U-Turn/Facade/Brave Bird/Protect, then?

Your porygon 2 seems to have won you the battle, as usual xD. What is up with that extreme hax, poor mofro.(then again, critfreeze ib is gay) WHY DOES SWELLOW WORK FOR YOU??!!?? he always fails me when i need him >_>

Great warstory. Your warstories always inspire me to want to train a swellow. Is yours Jolly or Adamant? The standard is Jolly right? But yours seems to hit incredibly hard...

Fixed and added in the missing turns. One TrickRoom sequence may still be out of tune though, but I'm 95% sure that I'm correct in the important parts where it went on and off.

Great warstory. Your warstories always inspire me to want to train a swellow. Is yours Jolly or Adamant? The standard is Jolly right? But yours seems to hit incredibly hard...

Yes, mine is Jolly to outspeed those pesky Gengars so I can 1hit them with BraveBird and also against Weaviles when I feel lucky and need to to flip a coin to see who will live and who will die since our speeds will be the same.

Also Facading away Alakazams, Sceptiles, Starmies, Azelfs and the like is always welcome. And what do you know, most of them pack moves that Swellow is weak to and are weak to U-Turn! So if they're not at optimal health, I can U-Turn away, kill them, avoid Burn damage and bring in a good stable pokemon to set up the next wave of attacks.

My Swellow may be Jolly, but the surprising damage is does is more from the actual Facade attack than its stats.
My Swellow has 31ivs in atk and speed.
So its running at:

383 speed. and its attack after FlameOrb activates is:
269 x 1.5 = 403.5

This beats out on RainDanced STABBED LifeOrb'd Surf from a Kingdra on pretty much on all accounts other than speed.
And if your ever hit by one you know how much damage that does to you.

403.5 attack combined with a 210 BP attack will hit hard on anything not resistant to it, and even on those that are if they don't have the defense to back it up.

You may notice though, that in all my stories, most of its kills are against pokemon that are usually below 70-75%. This is fully intentional. Swellow will be hardpressed to 1HitKO most pokemon that don't have Blissey level defenses. So that's why I keep him at the end when most pokemon at below that health mark so it can cleanly pick them off.
