Warstory: Revenge of the Slug

Given my recent defeat at the hands of PabloMeza, I set out to ShoddyBattle with the intent of redeeming myself. One of my greatest regrets in that particular battle was that the central figure in my team, Gastrodon, never really got a chance to shine outside of his single kill. As far as I know, Gastrodon is a pokemon who nobody really prepares for, and nobody seems to know his moveset, usually resulting in me pulling off kills from both sides of the spectrum (as I kill a physical attacker with counter and then follow up with mirror coat). And luckily enough for me, the first battle I entered gave my slug just the opportunity he was waiting for.

Medicham really isn’t more amazing than Gastrodon, but he is the starter :p

Chuckdhead sent out Weavile.
Amnesia sent out Medicham.
Weavile is exerting its pressure!

Fire Punch should be more than enough to kill, and my confidence in Brick Break isn’t what it used to be. Considering Chuck should be expecting a Scarf, I’m not fully convinced he won’t switch.

Medicham used Fire Punch.
It's super effective!
Weavile lost 115% of its health.
Weavile hung on using its Focus Sash!
Weavile was burned!
Weavile used Swords Dance.
Weavile's attack was sharply raised.
Weavile was hurt by its burn!
Weavile lost 12% of its health.
Chuckdhead's Weavile fainted.

Amnesia leads 6-5

Fortunately enough, Weavile stuck around, and with a little hax I got an early lead. Chuck would have been forced to switch after this turn anyway, but having a live Weavile could have come back to haunt me in this match.

Chuckdhead switched in Salamence.
Salamence's intimidate cut Medicham's attack!

Fire Punch is just about as good as a backrub on Salamence, so I’m forced to make my first switch of the match. In this instance, my lack of experience catches up to me; stat boosting opponents is something I almost never handle properly – I’ve only really got a few ways to ruin a booster on my team. Assuming that my Starmie can take a hit and then outspeed Salamence for the kill, I send him in…

Amnesia switched in Starmie.
Salamence used Dragon Dance.
Salamence's attack was raised.
Salamence's speed was raised.

…only to meet certain death. Is it ironic that I can’t see a DDing Mence coming even though I carry one on my team, or just really stupid? Anyway, any kind of switch is just going to make things worse, so it’s time to pay for my mistake.

Salamence used Dragon Claw.
Starmie lost 125% of its health.
Amnesia's Starmie fainted.
Salamence lost 10% of its health.

Tied 5-5

Of course, no team carries only one icer around, and I send out the one that should have come first.

Amnesia switched in Jolteon.

Ah, Jolteon. The third most amazing pokemon on my team. I’ve yet to run into another Jolteon, and I can’t figure out why. With his speed and versatility, Jolteon can usually pull off at least one kill a match.

Salamence used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Jolteon lost 256% of its health.
Jolteon hung on using its Focus Sash!
Salamence lost 10% of its health.
Jolteon used Hidden Power.
It's super effective!
Salamence lost 103% of its health.
Chuckdhead's Salamence fainted.

Amnesia leads 5-4

And that is why. Focus sash has saved me from countless DDers, as a fully healed Jolteon can stop a potential sweep before it does significant damage to my team. In this case, I should have switched into Jolteon the second I saw Salamence; because I didn’t think the situation through well enough, I lost my Starmie (another thing which could have come back to bite me)

Chuckdhead switched in Donphan.

Another Ice-weak, and one that’s slower than me? Hahahaha-

Donphan used Ice Shard.
Jolteon lost 22% of its health.
Amnesia's Jolteon fainted.

Tied 4-4

………
………
[Short intermission as I curse out my computer]

Honestly, I should have seen that coming from a mile away. Another small mistake that I’ll have to overcome, though honestly Jolteon had already done his share for this battle. At any rate, it gives me the chance to bring in the star of the show…

Amnesia switched in Gastrodon.
Chuckdhead wet his pants.

Seriously, though, at this point I expected a switch, and not wanting to tip my hand too soon, I go for Surf. Frankly, it should do more damage than Counter anyway.

Donphan used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
Gastrodon used Surf.
It's super effective!
Donphan lost 83% of its health.
Donphan's leftovers restored a little health!
Donphan restored 6% of its health.

Excellent. Honestly, Gastrodon’s special attack isn’t all that impressive, especially with absolutely no investment, but there are more important things for him to concentrate on. Apparently, setting up SR was more important to Chuck than keeping Donphan alive – either that, or he didn’t know what to expect from the slug.

Donphan used Earthquake.
Gastrodon lost 35% of its health.
Gastrodon used Surf.
It's super effective!
Donphan lost 85% of its health.
Chuckdhead's Donphan fainted.
Gastrodon's leftovers restored a little health!
Gastrodon restored 6% of its health.

Amnesia leads 4-3

And that, my friends, is why Gastrodon has no attack investment. Bold with 252 HP and near-max defense, Gastrodon can take hits like a champ. Nothing is going to stop this monster from taking down the rest of Chuck’s team…

Chuckdhead switched in Raikou.
Raikou is exerting its pressure!

…or not. The obvious thought here is HP Grass; otherwise, why would Chuck send out an electric type to a sturdy pokemon that could be running Earthquake (though Mixstrodon is most likely a very bad idea). Either he doesn’t know Gastrodon’s typing, or he’s going to OHKO me. I choose to give my opponent a little credit and switch out to Salamence, who resists grass 4 times over.

Side note: HP Grass is one of the reasons I really dislike Swampert. People really only carry it to take him down, and it makes using Gastrodon that much harder to do.

Amnesia switched in Salamence.
Salamence's intimidate cut Raikou's attack!
Pointed stones dug into Salamence.
Salamence lost 25% of its health.
Raikou used Calm Mind.
Raikou's special attack was raised.
Raikou's special defence was raised.
Salamence's leftovers restored a little health!
Salamence restored 6% of its health.

Raikou used Hidden Power.
It's super effective!
Salamence lost 164% of its health.
Amnesia's Salamence fainted.

Tied 3-3

Well, it looks like I didn’t give my opponent enough credit, after all. Using the threat of HP Grass and/or the lack of power on Gastrodon’s part to set up, Chuck then goes on to surprise me by using a completely different Hidden Power than I expected. Well, now that I know Raikou isn’t packing HP Grass, Gastrodon is free to come in again, right?

Amnesia switched in Gastrodon.
Pointed stones dug into Gastrodon.
Gastrodon lost 6% of its health.
Raikou used Substitute.
Raikou lost 25% of its health.
Raikou made a substitute!
Gastrodon used Recover.

Raikou's leftovers restored a little health!

Raikou's leftovers restored a little health!
Raikou restored 6% of its health.

Raikou used Calm Mind.
Raikou's special attack was raised.
Raikou's special defence was raised.
Gastrodon used Surf.
The substitute took damage for Raikou!
Raikou's substitute faded!
Raikou's leftovers restored a little health!
Raikou restored 6% of its health.

Well, that sucked. I’ve let my opponent get 3 CMs up, and all I got was this stupid T-shirt. On the bright side, I’ve gotten my Gastrodon back up to full health, which was my intention in the first place. Unfortunately, my Gastrodon is way too weak to take down a substitute, and I’m not going to send out Blissey to deal with a subbed Raikou, so it’s time to make a sacrifice.

Amnesia switched in Medicham.
Pointed stones dug into Medicham.

Medicham lost 190% of its health.
Amnesia's Medicham fainted.
Raikou's leftovers restored a little health!
Raikou restored 6% of its health.

Chuck leads 3-2

I’m behind for the first time in the match, and my physical attackers are both six feet under. My only choice is to send out the sixth most amazing pokemon on my team, Blissey. I hate the darn thing, but it just never freaking dies, so until Shuckle gets his uber-lution in the next generation, the bitch is stuck on my team.

Tied 2-2

[End ultimate gayness]

And thus, Blissey earns her spot on my team yet again. Just you wait, Blissey. One day you’re going to fail me, and when that day comes…

Chuckdhead switched in Metagross.
Metagross used Meteor Mash.
Metagross's attack missed!
Blissey used Softboiled.
Blissey restored 50% of its health.
Blissey's leftovers restored a little health!
Blissey restored 6% of its health.

Honestly, at this point I should have just gone for Seismic Toss and accepted that Blissey was on her way out, but hey, I’m no quitter!

Metagross used Meteor Mash.
Blissey lost 68% of its health.
Metagross's attack was raised.

Amnesia's Blissey fainted.
Metagross lost 10% of its health.

Chuck leads 2-1

Too bad my Blissey is. Oh well, I didn’t really need her anyway. It’s time to send out the only part of team that really matters and close this match down.

Amnesia switched in Gastrodon.
Pointed stones dug into Gastrodon.
Gastrodon lost 6% of its health.
Metagross lost 100% of its confidence.

Chuckdhead switched in Cresselia.
Gastrodon used Counter.
But it failed!
Gastrodon's leftovers restored a little health!
Gastrodon restored 6% of its health.

Seriously, my Gastrodon is so scary that it makes +1 Metagross run away crying. Not really, but some quick damage calculations show that max attack Metagross with Life Orb and +1 attack maxes at around 45% damage, not nearly enough to kill my Gastrodon (without the attack boost, it would be 26-31%, in case you’re wondering). So if he had stayed in, I would have countered him to death and then had to take on his Cresselia at about half health. I guess some people just want the sure thing…

Cresselia used Energy Ball.
It's super effective!
Gastrodon lost 59% of its health.
Gastrodon used Mirror Coat.
Cresselia lost 114% of its health.
Chuckdhead's Cresselia fainted.
Gastrodon's leftovers restored a little health!
Gastrodon restored 6% of its health.

Tied 1-1

…too bad chuck isn’t going to get it! That’s right, Gastrodon just shrugged off a 4X effective move to kill off Cresselia. Honestly, I don’t think Chuck saw Mirror Coat coming ^_^. Of course, with Metagross coming up, I might be on my way out…

Chuckdhead switched in Metagross.
Metagross used Meteor Mash.
Metagross's attack missed!
Gastrodon used Recover.
Gastrodon restored 50% of its health.
Gastrodon's leftovers restored a little health!
Gastrodon restored 6% of its health.

…or not! Relying on an 85% attack will catch up to you eventually, and it just gave my Gastrodon the chance it needed to finish things off for good. Of course, Meteor Mash might not have been enough to kill, even if it had hit.

Metagross used Earthquake.
Gastrodon lost 36% of its health.
Metagross lost 10% of its health.
Gastrodon used Counter.
Metagross lost 91% of its health.
Chuckdhead's Metagross fainted.
Amnesia wins!
Amnesia: gg
Chuckdhead: gg

And there you have it, folks. Gastrodon uses everything available to him to kill off three different pokemon with three different moves, and still has time to pick up the kids from school. Is there anything he can’t do?

Props:

- Gastrodon, for being the most amazing pokemon of all time.
- Jolteon, for giving my team another life against a deadly DDer.
- A little bit of hax never hurt anyone.

Slops:

- My inability to stop stat-uppers effectively, resulting in the premature deaths of two of my pokemon
- Blissey for taking up so many damn lines in every battle log I’ve ever read (seriously, though, I’d be dead without her)
- Nobody ever freaking uses Gastrodon. Good for me, bad for everyone else :p

I love the slug. I used one through the E4, and he has yet to fail me... But I never would have expected a pseudo-wobb ownage spree like this!

Arrgh, I can't get Calm Minders down for the count either, although you pulled it off getting that Raikou out of the picture, good job. Also, I love your use out of Gastrodon.

PS- GOD I HATE CRESSELIA..!!!

...so the strategy he used with Gastrodon to take down 3 Pokemon is nothing like the way Swampert is used whatsoever, and you're calling it a poor man's swampert.

Oooooook.

Well damn. Good job on performing so well with Gastrodon. You would have shrugged off the Meteor Mash which would only have done 32% tops due to your resisting it anyway (assuming 200 def is near max).

Woo Gastrodon!

Don't get me wrong - your opponent should have just CMed his Cress up in Gastrodon's face until it could OHKO - but it's still fun to read about lesser pokes getting some action.

Very nice Gastrodon.

I hate how people call Gastrodon a poor man's Swampert... Swampert lacks a 50% recovery move which gives Gastrodon just that much more durability. Plus this Gastrodon was evidently shown to be the Pseudo-Wobb variety. Swampert can't do what Gastrodon can, and Gastrodon can't do what Swampert can.

Although both being defensive Water/Ground Pokemon, they truely do have different functions.

Actually, Swampert can use Counter and Mirror Coat just like Gastrodon, only thing is that it doesn't have an instant recovery move. Anyways nice use of Gastrodon, I expect its use to rise because of this.

Except Swampert with both Counter and Mirror Coat is illegal. Gastrodon takes both from Wobbuffet, thanks to both being in the Indeterminate egg group. That kinda adds to the ''Gastrodon is a poor man's Wobbuffet'' idea, and is ironically funny.

Interesting Warstory, although it was sort of weird when you didn't see Ice Shard coming, or when you thought that a once danced Salamence wouldn't be faster than any non-Deokys, non-Scarf pokémon. The Raikou switch in was ok, as the guy really mind tricked you, but the other stuff might have costed you the game if you hadn't Gastrodon to save the day. Mad slug props.

Yes! The Gastropods strike back! Now all we need is a Magcargo sweep! Oh, and nice one for using Gastrodon. I caught one early on in the game, and he took me all the way to the E-4, although I never thought of using a pseudo-Wobba.

I have a Gastrodon too, but have a different EV spread than you lol.

Mine has 252 HP, 129 def and 129 spec def. But we have the same moveset xD

Interesting that you mention that, seeing as Swampert and Gastrodon are both in Water 1, so Swampert can get both of them at the same time off Gastrodon.

lol, that's true. I thought Swampert was Water 3. Dunno why. Thanks for correcting me.

Great story, I wasn't sure if you were going to win following the DDance Salamence and then the CM Raikou. Gastrodon was an absolute beast.

Swampert can also just get Mirror Coat as an Egg Move, and then be tutored Counter on Pokemon Emerald before trading over to D/P.
