Well, the first official #pokemon tournament has finally finished, with relatively positive feedback and opinions.
Some background:
The tournament was designed to promote discussion in #pokemon by removing the private teams aspect of battling, therefore encouraging battlers to discuss strategy even with opponents.
At the beginning, we asked the community to submit teams, and over 60 teams were submitted. We then picked 24 teams based on certain themes; Sand, Rain, Sun, Hail, No Weather, and Wildcard teams. It looks like most people didn't care for the wildcard teams and most of the Hail teams, so in future iterations we'll probably focus less on thematic differentiation and more on simply perceived quality of teams.
Teams:
As the tournament progressed, we experienced some interesting complaints / concerns / thoughts. SoT, reyscarface, and iconic, all respected battlers, all submitted teams that ended up doing quite poorly. iconic and reyscarface would yell "bad players," but you be the judge :P
We also experienced people yelling about cmx's team, a no weather team that had the controversial strategy of putting roost on a cb scizor. However, the team performed admirably, going 5 - 2 in the first 2 rounds before losing twice in r3 and leaving the tournament with a 5 - 4 record.
Then there was the wildcard issue...which, as bluewind succinctly put it...sucked. They had 32 chances to be picked, were only picked 9 times, and only won twice. They bowed out with a record of 1 - 2 (team 23) and 1 - 5 (team 24). In the future, I'll probably avoid putting smashpass / baton pass teams into the mix lol.
As we got into later rounds, certain battlers (iconic primarily), complained that Golden Sun's team matched up poorly against rain teams (primarily mcmeghan's team 10) due to its one water resist (celebi). However, in round 5 (quarterfinals), Golden Sun's team went 2 - 0 against mcmeghan, causing me to believe that the severe disadvantage wasn't as large as initially perceived. Poor ToF for not going with his gut instinct that Golden Sun's team could match up fine against mcmeghan's...and losing while using mcmeghan's team against golden sun's :P
As a host, I'll be making improvements in 3 areas for the next one. First, while thematic diversity will be a factor, it won't be as big a factor in choosing teams the next time. I'll probably only take 1 hail team and drop the wildcard entirely. Second, for eliminating teams after r1 + r2 (this gives each team 16 chances to be picked), I'll ignore thematic diversity entirely. This came up when I was deciding the last team to advance after r2. It came down to YAYtears, team 5 at 2 - 1, MDragon, team 11 at 3 - 1, and Lady Bug, team 20 at 2 - 1. I chose YAYtears' to advance because I didn't want a third Rain team, but next time I'll probably choose Mdragon's. Finally, for future tournaments, I'll be making sure that people can't use their own teams, except in certain cases at the end of the tournament when there may be no choice.
In the end, I wanted to reward a team based on both record and how many times it was picked. I came up with a formula of rewarding 5 points for every win, 3 points for every loss, and 1 point for every time the team was used. If there was a tie in points, I used overall record percentage as the tiebreaker.
Without further ado, the results!
Results (5W - 3L + times picked):
(just for clarification, 5w - 3l + picked is the same as 6w - 2l, but I wanted to show that getting picked reduced the loss weighting.)
