Overview:
  • Only SmashPasser to use in the tier
  • no defenses to speak of

[SET]
name: SmashPass
move 1: Shell Smash
move 2: Baton Pass
move 3: Surf
move 4: Ice Beam
item: White Herb
nature: Modest
ability: Swift Swim
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[Set Comments]
  • essentially best BPer in the tier because it only requires one turn of setup
  • Surf is actually deceptively powerful in the rain
  • Get in and out fast
  • In the rain it can outspeed and revenge kill Pokemon up to Darkrai's Speed stat--don't bother with defenses since it can't take a hit
  • Really hard to stop a SmashPassed Pokemon

[Additional Comments]
  • Kyogre is required for rain boost to Swift Swim
  • Wobbuffet helps it get in and set up
  • If you want to go total BP, use a screener such as Latios or Deoxys-S
  • Groudon hurts really badly because it takes away the rain and your Speed Boost pre-Shell Smash
  • Mixed Rayquaza lures in Groudon and Lugia, two common Dragon Tail (phazing) users and KOes with Draco Meteor. It also KOes Giratina-O if it comes in.
  • Dialga can come in on Giratina-O's Shadow Sneak and outspeed and KO with Dragon moves while also being a good Smash recipient
  • Good recipients are bulkier mons with good coverage such as Dialga, Groudon, or Mewtwo
  • Can be used on an offensive team by passing to a set up sweeper like Calm Mind Mewtwo
  • Gorebyss can only really pull this off because it has only one White Herb, so things that limit the time of your sweep should be removed, like Toxic Spikes. Fast taunts like Deoxys-S or Rapid Spinners like Tentacruel, Forretress, and Excadrill can do this.

[Other Options]
  • there are no other options lol. Gorebyss can only really do damage with Surf and Ice Beam and it should never invest in any defenses

[Checks and Counters]
  • Groudon takes away its rain
  • Arceus, Giratina-O, and other priority users can bypass its boosts and do a ton of damage
  • just can't take a hit
  • Prankster Taunt really messes it up
  • Rayquaza has Air Lock to stop Swift Swim but will not be able to take a boosted Ice Beam
  • Gorebyss can only really pass once without passing defensive drops, so if you can scare it out then you've probably avoided the worst

And because I can...

SmashPassing is so overpowered. Just a few nitpicks:

- Mention LO and Hydro Pump in there somewhere. You do 77.97% - 91.83% to standard defensive Dialga with +2 LO Hydro Pump, so if it gets some prior damage, then it can't Roar you out because you can kill it. LO also give you a chance to OHKO Giratina before it tries to phaze out as well.
- Mention Dialga and Giratina in counters if you're running White Herb, since they can just phaze you. Defensive Kyogre can phaze Gorebyss as well.
- Dual Screens are nice. Healing Wish and Lunar Dance are also nice if you can provide it.

Fit these in somewhere, and we have:

You might want to mention team preview (don't get your phazers too damaged before Gorebyss is neutralized). Tentacruel absorbs TSpikes, so it doesn't have to spin. Dialga is immune to TSpikes, so it doesn't need spinning. Lum Berry on the receiver also negates TSpikes. Also this:

Good recipients are bulkier mons with good coverage such as Dialga, Groudon, or Mewtwo

You take out your own rain if Groudon is forced in for whatever reason (e.g. it's phazed out). Granted a +2/+2 Groudon is great, but is it good given the conflicts?

@shrang - what's the Healing Wish and Lunar Dance for? Gorebyss is only going to be able to pass once, while if you go for DS + Healing Wish / Lunar Dance, you are inviting your opponent's phazer in. Or he can bring in something with Sub, which also beats you.

@shrang - what's the Healing Wish and Lunar Dance for?

Well if by some chance, they stop your sweeper and Gorebyss is still alive, you can use (say Latias) Healing Wish to quickly bring Gorebyss back to full health to pass off again.

Hydro Pump is actually rather for the reasons Shrang mentioned. Also I'd be hesitant to mention Groudon as a check since after a Smash, Ice Beam will OHKO Groudon.

Also, IMO, you need to stress on what Gorebyss has over Smeargle who gets Taunt and Spore in addition to being a Smashpasser. Basically, Gorebyss can go on the offensive if needed and is fast enough in Rain even without a Smash. Gastrodon can somewhat check Gorebyss with Clear Smog to remove at stat changes though a simple pass to Dialga will overcome this.

And I think thats that

I'd mention Hydration in AC or OO because it makes you 'immune' to status under rain

I'd mention Hydration in AC or OO because it makes you 'immune' to status under rain

Swift Swim is the biggest advantage Gorebyss has over Smeargle, so it makes little sense to use Hydration. Why bother with status when pretty much any decently powerful neutral hit can kill it ?

I will mention Zekrom as a good recipient because it destroys everything at +2. Even Groudon gets owned by +2 Draco Meteor, or Outrage will still almost OHKO it. Bolt Strike destroys Lugia, Arceus and Chansey. Focus Blast or Hidden Power Fire can be used to KO Ferrothorn.

The thing is +2 Dialga will fail to 2HKO Chansey with Aura Sphere so you have to use Brick Break or Outrage to reliably get past it. If you hold Life Orb, Chansey can spam Softboiled till you die from it.

Groudon is unable to get past Giratina without a critical hit, although it deals massive damage, Giratina will survive and burn or phaze you out. Max Defense Arceus can also survive a +2 Earthquake and Roar you out.

Mewtwo is much frailer and the extra Speed is more useful for Zekrom than it is for Mewtwo. Zekrom also resists Grass-type attacks such as from Shaymin-S or Grass Arceus. +2 Outrage owns Arceus.

Only SmashPasser to use in the tier
Smeargle 9.9. Smeargle's a scary passer because it has the ability to shut down phazers via Spore.

You should mention that one of the more common checks to Gorebyss is Dialga, who can take a boosted hit (~60% from +2 rain Surf iirc) and phaze it away. Or it could just hammer Gorebyss / its recipient down with its powerful Special Attacks. Gorebyss will need screen support to ensure that Dialga won't murder it.

QC 4/3 so I can override your self-QC ;)

Wait could this be passed to a choice specs kyogre? If so holy crap you could just sweep with water spout 1HKO blissey, chansey(with hazards) and even 1HKO standard palkia with hazards or max damage.

1[20:27] <Furai> ibo can i take over smashpass gorebyss !_!
