Default Simulator Usage Statistics for VGC '12 (Updated January 15th)

ryuzaki who runs the SkarmBliss VGC server on Pokemon Online is going to try and update every week with usage statistics for the VGC '12 tier. I think some numbers might spark some discussion as well as let people know what the most common threats are in the online metagame. It'll also serve as a nice archive of the evolution of the online metagame. Keep in mind that regionals will not see usage ANYTHING like this. It may be somewhat representative of what you'll see in later rounds, Nationals Top Cut, or Worlds as more of the playerbase will be used to playing online - but also keep in mind the best players usually have a few Pokemon that most haven't seen used much or used in ways you don't expect.

This is really awesome, since there were only about 20 VGC 2012 rated battles on our server in the month of November.

Got a kick out of 3 weather setters being in the top 10 then Ninetales down at 35.

But as you said, these ratings should always be taken with a huge pinch of salt since the regionals have way more unpredictable usage until the later rounds.

not to mention people tend to use pokemon they may not be able to get in cartridge legally without great difficulty (like some of the XD pokemon for example)

either way definitely cool to see what's being used a lot to get a taste of the metagame.

Fuk Ninetales.

Surprised Hitmontop isn't at the top, but not surprised at all by the top 3. And Scizor at number 11 was surprising.

When did Snorlax get so popular? My team isn't hipster enough now.

I'm rather surprised that Top 10 from VGC 2012 doesn't look all that different from it's 2009 counterpart. Eight of those Pokemon have been staples for at least 4 years now! Looks like Doubles is much more stale than I initially thought.

Thanks for sharing.

Before the statistics were released, I just knew Zapdos would come out on top... Also, Metagross ftw!

Not suprised at who's in top20. Though whoa didn't even know Volcarana was used, and didn't expect chandy to break t5

I don't think being a staple in 2009 and 2012 and seeing some to no use in 2010 and 2011 qualifies as four years.

Uh, sorry, I meant a "standard" Doubles metagame with no wierd rules like two Ubers per team and Unova only Pokemon.

That's still only six at the most though. Tyranitar and Chandelure were banned and Politoed and Hitmontop were lol (Hitmontop did not learn Low Kick, didn't get Close Combat until after lv. 50, and Technician Mach Punch was even more situational then than it is now).

THIS SPREADSHEET contains the data and puts a few interesting twists in it. I'll be adding more as the week goes on.

I'll keep that spreadsheet up to date. If there's anything that anyone would like to see on here give me a heads up, I have a lot of time on my hands in the next few weeks and would be more than willing to implement your ideas.

Interesting week, Sandstorm is the most likely weather at 4 with Hail being the second most likely at 7. Interesting that rain didn't make the top 10 at 12 and that sun only makes the top 40 at 37. Also interesting the huge increase of usage of Salamence and Eelektross.

Hate to break it to you but the popularity of weather inducers doesn't necessarily indicate that the weathers going with them are as popular as the inducers themselves. Yeah, you might say that sand is a popular concept, yet hail has really only Abomasnow going for it and not much else since things like Glaceon are too reliant on certain field conditions to be working effectively. I would say that sand and rain are probably the most popular weather styles but I think rain is still the best because it can be abused in a variety of ways and isn't hampered by Intimidate.

I was just pointing it out that it was interesting that the inducers of each weather were in an interesting order...I was maybe too broad by saying sandstorm, hail etc. I was expecting Politoed to be at least in the top 10 considering the amount of rain teams I have come across on PO.

Also, I would agree with you for most of the post but apart from the last bit about rain. Most rain teams always have Politoed, Ludicolo, Toxicroak and a Thunder abuser as the core of the team. This leads to easy prediction as all rain teams spam surf. Also, there is no defensive synergy as the focus is all on offensive synergy in rain teams. However, with sandstorm, all rock/steel/ground get a 50% Sp.Def boost and, although hampered by intimidate, have a wider variety of abusers and therefore usually have better defensive synergy compared to rain teams. I would say that sand teams are probably slightly better than rain teams. I would also like to point out that I don't run either weather on my team and therefore will not be biased in my view.

Only rock types get the 50% Sp. Def boost, and from what I've seen, the presence of tyranitar doesn't necessarily mean you're facing a sand team, it is an incredibly versatile choice, as it can pretty much counter zapdos completely, and quite a few other top mons, such as cresselia, chandelure (without WoW) latios and abomasnow.

Not to mention, a lot of teams with Abomasnow or Tyranitar will possibly have chosen them only for the purpose or changing the weather against Rain teams, which is a great asset to have.
