Overview
########

  • Good bulk
  • Access to Regenerator
  • Access to Spore
  • Good defensive typing
  • Usable Special Attack
  • Absorbs Toxic Spikes

Physically Defensive
########
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Spore
move 2: Giga Drain
move 3: Clear Smog / Sludge Bomb
move 4: Stun Spore / Synthesis / Foul Play
ability: Regenerator
item: Black Sludge
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
nature: Bold

Moves
========

  • Spore is to put foes to sleep and take them out of commission for most of the match. Also the only 100% accurate sleep inducing move in the game.
  • Giga Drain is reliable STAB that helps restore Amoonguss' HP
  • Clear Smog is used to remove stat changes from enemies and can be very useful against opposing sweepers
  • Sludge Bomb can be used over Clear Smog if extra power is preferred over removing stat changes
  • Stun Spore is used to paralyze opponents and can be particularly useful for assisting slower sweepers
  • Synthesis can be used as semi-reliable recovery, but is generally not preferred because it has Regenerator
  • Foul Play can be used to deal with some common checks such as Metagross

Set Details
========

  • EVs and nature are to maximize physical bulk
  • HP also coincidentally hits a perfect Leftovers number
  • Leftovers are good for reliable chip recovery
  • Regenerator can recover a third of its HP while switching which is always an awesome attribute to have
Usage Tips
========

  • Can come in on powerful Fighting-types lacking Ice Punch and clear their boosts and paralyze them, put them to sleep, or even finish them off if they are at low HP
  • Do not expect it to entirely wall attackers, but rather to act as a defensive pivot who can come in, do a quick job, then come out and recover HP thank to Regenerator

Team Options
========
  • Other Regenerator users such as Alomomola and Slowbro can form an effective core
  • Slow sweepers that can capitalize off of paralysis from Stun Spore such as Swords Dance Heracross and setup sweepers who can use free turns given by Spore such as Mega Houndoom make good partners
  • Hidden Power Fire can be used to get past Steel-types that block Amoonguss, but is generally hard to fit onto a set

Other Options
########

  • An Assault Vest set is plausible, but Amoonguss' Special Attack is hardly usable and it can not use support moves such as Spore, Stun Spore, and Synthesis. It does have the nice Regenerator / Assault Vest combination, but it is generally not advised
  • An offensive Life Orb set can be used, but even with a Life Orb it is still relatively weak, having the power of a base 125 Special Attack without an item. Also, it compromises Amoonguss' bulk, which it holds so dearly. Regenerator helps alleviate this a little bit, but it is still not the best option for Amoonguss.

Checks & Counters
########

  • Forretress and Escavalier can completely and utterly stop Amoonguss. They both have Overcoat so they are not affected by Spore and Stun Spore and they are immune to one and 4x resist the other of its STABs. Forretress guarantees hazards against it or at least forces the switch and Escavalier can force it out and smash any switch in with an attack off of its base 135 Attack
  • Flying types can tear apart Amoonguss with their super effective STABs. Crobat in particular resists its Poison STAB as well as 4x Resisting its Grass STAB and can then mash it with a STAB Brave Bird
  • Fire Types such as Chandelure, Darmanitan, Victini, and Arcanine can burn Amoonguss to the ground. Darmanitan and Arcanine can hit him with STAB Flare Blitz and Victini can magnificently obliterate Amoonguss in a flaming V. Chandelure resists both of his STABs and can fire (heh) at him with a STAB Fire Blast or Flamethrower

Slash Foul Play in the last slot as it is an unique move Amoonguss has to deal with some of its checks. for example it 2hkoes Metagross and does a lot to Crobat and Escavalier

Synthesis >>>>> Stun Spore. Sludge Bomb is already for Grass types that resist Spore. Also Foul Play should be there somewhere imo too.
im not sure exactly sure where i stand on Synthesis vs Stun Spore discussion. Remember, stun spore doesnt affect grass type either :P. I will add foul play to the last set as it has been recommended twice

Haha I know it doesn't, just throwing a point out there. Synthesis is just good recovery for what we call "being a stalling ass" haha. Stun Spore is inaccurate and just wastes a moveslot imo

well thanks for your "o" lol. ill ask around on IRC for the general opinion.

You might want to specify which targets Clear Smog hits, since atm I can't really think of threats on the spot that mind Clear Smog or Amoonguss can safely use said move on except for random Smeargle/Gorebyss recipients and some random non-Steel-type CMers (in fact the only things it can safely use it on without being KOd are Lilligant and Suicune). Sludge Bomb seems better imo since you can basically spam it on Florges and pressure it with bare 3HKO + a chance to poison, making it waste turns with Aromatherpy, and just operates as a strong attack with a decent poison chance in general.

In the overview, you have only listed its pros. You should prolly add some of Amoonguss' shortcomings like common weaknesses to fire and ice as well as its slowness. The nerf to powder moves could also be mentioned.
