ADV UU is an underappreciated tier which I massively enjoy, perhaps more than OU. However, having played only around 250 matches in it since I took it up in 2011, it's not my strongest tier. The metagame is far quicker than ADV OU, with battles ranging from 35-85 turns in general. This is caused by the fact that most of the biggest threats in the tier are offensively oriented - Kanga, Pinsir, Gligar, Manectric, Tentacruel etc, and there are no bona fide hardcore walls either. I challenged Umby, a far better player than me, over IRC. Despite having beaten me multiple times previously (one of those I had 70% chance to win though) and having seen my team before, he willingly accepted. In the first game we played, he beat me with a Venomoth team, and I was disappointed as I had played poorly overall. I decided to challenge him again and resolved to improve my game. I thought this warstory overall would be nice way to say goodbye.

My team:

The team I am using here is my strongest ADV UU team - it is balanced and aims to accomodate powerful, slow-to-medium physical sweepers - Swords Dance Sandslash and Pinsir, and CB Muk - while covering important offensive threats with Cradily and Lanturn. Sharpedo can both clean at the end, and covers Reversalers/Flailers with Endure and Rough Skin. Anyway, let's get into the game.

Battle between Triangles 33 and Umby started!

Triangles 33 sent out Galadriel! (Lanturn)
Umby sent out Kangaskhan!

vs.

Start of turn 1
Triangles 33 called Galadriel back!
Triangles 33 sent out Elendil! (Cradily)

vs.

The foe's Kangaskhan used Double-Edge!
It's not very effective...
Elendil lost 83 HP! (22% of its health)
The foe's Kangaskhan is hit with recoil!

The foe's Kangaskhan restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

I make the safe switch to Cradily as Umby D'E's. From the damage I know it's not Choice Banded. It could be a 3 attacks + Rest set, a SubPuncher (the kind which gives Cradily most trouble), or a Wisher.

Start of turn 2
Umby called Kangaskhan back!
Umby sent out Tentacruel!

vs.

Elendil used Hidden Power!
The foe's Tentacruel lost 48% of its health!

The foe's Tentacruel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

I knew Umby was going to switch, and decided to go with generic damage. He switches to Tentacruel as I HP Rock. Tentacruel seems to be a strange switch-in to Cradily. I can only presume that he was pivoting Toxic so that he could go to something that doesn't like getting Toxiced on the switch.

Start of turn 3
Umby called Tentacruel back!
Umby sent out Lunatone!

vs.

Elendil used Earthquake!
It had no effect!

Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

I EQ, playing cautiously at the start. If I were pro, I would have Toxiced - I knew he was pivoting with Tenta, but I assumed he would be more cautious than to go straight up to Lunatone.

Start of turn 4

vs.

The foe's Lunatone used Calm Mind!
The foe's Lunatone's Sp. Att. rose!
The foe's Lunatone's Sp. Def. rose!

Elendil used Hidden Power!
The foe's Lunatone lost 31% of its health!

The foe's Lunatone restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Seeing as Umby pivoted to check for Toxic, I presumed Lunatone would Sub first off. Umby knows this team and knows I have Toxic. Perhaps he's either predicting me perfectly, or he's being too careless, or he doesn't have Sub and his team is really really Cradily weak. Umby would never make a team so Cradily weak though, would he?

Start of turn 5

vs.

The foe's Lunatone used Ice Beam!
It's super effective!
Elendil lost 216 HP! (58% of its health)

Elendil used Toxic!
The attack of Elendil missed!

The foe's Lunatone restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Ice Beam... It looks like he's Subless (could be running a non-BP set though), but my Toxic annoyingly misses and I'm forced out. The fact that Lunatone and Tentacruel are his first Cradily switchins indicate that he might be a tad weak to it, or he's keeping something in reserve.

Start of turn 6
Triangles 33 called Elendil back!
Triangles 33 sent out Galadriel! (Lanturn)

vs.

The foe's Lunatone used Baton Pass!
Umby called Lunatone back!
Umby sent out Vileplume!

As I make the conservative switch to Lunatone, Umby BP's to Viloplume (possibly with or without Substitute). The fact that Vileplume is the recipient of passes indicates to me that it is most likely a Sunnybeamer.

Start of turn 7

vs.

Galadriel used Thunder Wave!
The foe's Vileplume is paralyzed! It may be unable to move!

The foe's Vileplume used Sleep Powder!
The attack of the foe's Vileplume missed!

I Thunder Wave, predicting Umby to Sunny Day. He Sleep Powders and misses - I got let off the hook as the one thing this team doesn't have is a sleep absorber.

Start of turn 8

Triangles 33 called Galadriel back!
Triangles 33 sent out Elendil! (Cradily)

vs.

The foe's Vileplume used Sunny Day!
The sunlight turned harsh!

The sunlight is strong!
Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

No word of a lie, that was a misclick. I misclick a lot - my fingers carry about half my body fat, and my mouse is dodgy. Anyway, it might have been an alright move, had Cradily taken the sleep. It could possibly wake up on Kanga and wouldnt be switch fodder for much.

Start of turn 9

Triangles 33 called Elendil back!
Triangles 33 sent out Celeborn! (Muk)

vs.

The foe's Vileplume used SolarBeam!
It's not very effective...
Celeborn lost 158 HP! (39% of its health)

The sunlight is strong!

Umby SolarBeams, quite understandably, as Cradily is not necessarily what he wants to sleep. Muk takes it well.

Start of turn 10

vs.

Celeborn used Sludge Bomb!
The foe's Vileplume lost 78% of its health!

The foe's Vileplume used Sleep Powder!
The attack of the foe's Vileplume missed!

The sunlight is strong!
The foe's Vileplume restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Triangles 33: sorry

I could have Boomed there if I were very scared of Vilo, but I decide to play very safely and Sludge Bomb. Sleep Powder misses, so I dodge a huge bullet there.

Start of turn 11

Umby called Vileplume back!
Umby sent out Omastar!

vs.

Celeborn used Sludge Bomb!
It's not very effective...
The foe's Omastar lost 22% of its health!

The sunlight is strong!
The foe's Omastar restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Interesting. Umby seems unwilling to sack Vilo as of yet, and goes to Omastar, knowing that Muk is Banded from the damage. I can spin, so I'm not particularly perturbed by the idea of Spikes. The Rain Dancer is walled by Lanturn. I think Umby is using spies' team or very similar.

Start of turn 12

Triangles 33 called Celeborn back!
Triangles 33 sent out Elendil! (Cradily)

vs.

The foe's Omastar used Spikes!
Spikes were scattered all around the feet of Triangles 33's team!

The sunlight faded!
The foe's Omastar restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Umby: Pokemon indeed does happen.

Sure enough, there are the expected Spikes as I go to Cradily to get off a free Recover. At least I presumed.

Start of turn 13

vs.

The foe's Omastar used Toxic!
Elendil was badly poisoned!

Elendil used Recover!
Elendil regained health!

The foe's Omastar restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil is hurt by poison!

This is not good at all. As it turns out, Umby's Omastar carries the relatively uncommon Toxic, and my Cradily, which is a very important factor in the game, is hit by it and crippled for its duration. I guess Umby knows that Cradily is a physical variant as well. Umby has the upper hand certainly.

Start of turn 14

Triangles 33 called Elendil back!
Triangles 33 sent out Galadriel! (Lanturn)
Galadriel is hurt by spikes!

vs.

The foe's Omastar used Spikes!
Spikes were scattered all around the feet of Triangles 33's team!

Galadriel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Omastar restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

I go to Lanturn, knowing that Umby will Spike as opposed to Toxicing again, and also to force Vileplume in so that I can double switch to Sandslash.

Start of turn 15
Triangles 33 called Galadriel back!
Triangles 33 sent out Elrond! (Sandslash)
Elrond is hurt by spikes!

Umby called Omastar back!
Umby sent out Vileplume!

vs.

Elrond restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Vileplume restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

The double switch works as planned. Now it's a game of prediction - I could Rapid Spin as he switches, or he could predict me to do so and Sleep Powder. If I predict Sleep Powder, Earthquake is the optimal move.

Start of turn 16
Umby called Vileplume back!
Umby sent out Lunatone!

vs.

Elrond used Earthquake!
It had no effect!

The foe's Lunatone restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elrond restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

He predicts right, knowing that I will be very cautious around Vileplume due to my apparent (and indeed true) lack of a sleep absorber.

Start of turn 17

vs.

The foe's Lunatone used Psychic!
Elrond lost 153 HP! (47% of its health)

Elrond used Rapid Spin!
It's not very effective...
The foe's Lunatone lost 3% of its health!
Elrond blew away Spikes!

The foe's Lunatone restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elrond restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

I decide that the best cause of action is to spin anyway on Lunatone, as most likely he will either Psychic or BP predicting Lanturn to come in. I'm right, and Sandslash spins freely.

Start of turn 18
Triangles 33 called Elrond back!
Triangles 33 sent out Galadriel! (Lanturn)

vs.

The foe's Lunatone used Psychic!
Galadriel lost 91 HP! (22% of its health)

The foe's Lunatone restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Galadriel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Predicting him to simply attack again, I switch to Lanturn.

Start of turn 19
The foe's Lunatone used Baton Pass!
Umby called Lunatone back!
Umby sent out Vileplume!

vs.

Galadriel used Ice Beam!
It's super effective!
The foe's Vileplume lost 34% of its health!
The foe's Vileplume fainted!

Umby sent out Kangaskhan!

The foe's Kangaskhan restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Galadriel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Knowing he is most likely to BP to Vileplume, I Ice Beam. First blood. The reason why I make a seemingly needless prediction is my physically defensive EV spread which sacrifices Special Attack (and as such I was questioning whether Surf and Ice Beam combined would kill, as previously it has failed to do so against defensive Viloplumes at similar ranges), which will play an instrumental part later in the game.

Start of turn 20
Triangles 33 called Galadriel back!
Triangles 33 sent out Elendil! (Cradily)

vs.

The foe's Kangaskhan used Wish!

Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil is hurt by poison!

Kangaskhan shows itself to be a bulky Wishing variant, and as such I can either deal with it by Toxicing it with Cradily, or Thunder Waving it with Lanturn and Swords dancing on it with Sandslash. Nonetheless now Cradily can get a free Toxic off.

Start of turn 21
Umby called Kangaskhan back!
Umby sent out Omastar!

vs.

Elendil used Toxic!
The foe's Omastar was badly poisoned!

Kangaskhan's wish came true!
The foe's Omastar is hurt by poison!
Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil is hurt by poison!

I make what you could consider to be a poor play, as Umby could have potentially gone to Druidcruel and recovered a lot of health. However, I realise that Umby would predict me to Earthquake, predicting him to go to Tenta.

Start of turn 22
Triangles 33 called Elendil back!
Triangles 33 sent out Galadriel! (Lanturn)

vs.

The foe's Omastar used Spikes!
Spikes were scattered all around the feet of Triangles 33's team!

Galadriel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Omastar restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Omastar is hurt by poison!

I go to Lanturn, deciding that the best cause of action is to Thunder Wave Kanga and kill it late-game with Sandslash.

Start of turn 23
Umby called Omastar back!
Umby sent out Kangaskhan!

vs.

Galadriel used Thunder Wave!
The foe's Kangaskhan is paralyzed! It may be unable to move!

Galadriel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

I land the para on him as planned, now that threat is substantially lowered.

Start of turn 24
Triangles 33 called Galadriel back!
Triangles 33 sent out Elendil! (Cradily)
Elendil is hurt by spikes!

Umby called Kangaskhan back!
Umby sent out Lunatone!

vs.

The foe's Lunatone restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil is hurt by poison!

This turn is kinda moot. I guess Umby was predicting Sandslash, and I was playing dead safe, and also kinda sacking Cradily.

Start of turn 25

vs.

The foe's Lunatone used Calm Mind!
The foe's Lunatone's Sp. Att. rose!
The foe's Lunatone's Sp. Def. rose!

Elendil used Toxic!
The foe's Lunatone was badly poisoned!

The foe's Lunatone is hurt by poison!
Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil is hurt by poison!

I get the Toxic off on Lunatone as it CM's. Possibly, the smart play here was to go straight to Lanturn, but either way works.

Start of turn 26

vs.

Triangles 33 called Elendil back!
Triangles 33 sent out Galadriel! (Lanturn)
Galadriel is hurt by spikes!

The foe's Lunatone used Calm Mind!
The foe's Lunatone's Sp. Att. rose!
The foe's Lunatone's Sp. Def. rose!

The foe's Lunatone restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Lunatone is hurt by poison!
Galadriel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Lunatone CM's again suprisingly as opposed to BPing or attacking. Knowing spies' team, the best reciever Umby has at this point is Ninetales, which will not take kindly to Cradily's HP Rock or Lanturn's Surf.

Start of turn 27

vs.

The foe's Lunatone used Psychic!
Galadriel lost 211 HP! (52% of its health)

Galadriel used Surf!
It's super effective!
The foe's Lunatone lost 40% of its health!

The foe's Lunatone restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Lunatone is hurt by poison!
Galadriel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Psychic takes a hefty chunk out of Lanturn, but I decide to conserve it for later in the game. At this stage, I'm pretty convinced that Umby won't BP out as he most likely thinks I will sack Lanturn.

Start of turn 28
Triangles 33 called Galadriel back!
Triangles 33 sent out Legolas! (Sharpedo)
Legolas is hurt by spikes!

vs.

The foe's Lunatone used Psychic!
It had no effect!

The foe's Lunatone restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Lunatone is hurt by poison!

Sharpedo is in an excellent position here, being quicker than Lunatone and able to Crunch it to death. Umby is pretty much forced to sack, and he'll most likely follow up with Tentacruel.

Start of turn 29

vs.

Legolas used Crunch!
It's super effective!
The foe's Lunatone lost 15% of its health!
The foe's Lunatone fainted!

Umby sent out Tentacruel!

The foe's Tentacruel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Sure enough, Tentacruel is the choice of follow-up. I know that Sludge Bomb will just about not kill most rolls, and it will actiavte my Salac Berry. 2 Crunches should be enough to kill Tenta as well, and if I need I can Endure + Rough Skin.

Start of turn 30

vs.

The foe's Tentacruel used Sludge Bomb!
Legolas lost 208 HP! (73% of its health)
Legolas was poisoned!
Legolas ate its Salac Berry!
The Salac Berry raised Legolas's Speed!

Legolas used Crunch!
The foe's Tentacruel lost 37% of its health!

Legolas is hurt by poison!
The foe's Tentacruel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Unfortunately for me, Tentacruel manages to poison Sharpedo. 30% chance - it's fair enough and makes up for me dodging those two Sleep Powders early on. Sharpedo could have done damage, but it's basically dead, with only one more chance to hurt something.

Start of turn 31
Umby called Tentacruel back!
Umby sent out Omastar!

vs.

Legolas used Crunch!
The foe's Omastar lost 48% of its health!

Legolas is hurt by poison!
Legolas fainted!
The foe's Omastar restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Omastar is hurt by poison!
Triangles 33 sent out Galadriel! (Lanturn)
Galadriel is hurt by spikes!

Crunch takes a lump out of Omastar. Yet again, I wasn't ballsy enough to pull the trigger and Hydro Pump. Sharpedo goes down and it could have potentially done damage.

Start of turn 32

vs.

Galadriel used Thunderbolt!
It's super effective!
The foe's Omastar lost 39% of its health!
The foe's Omastar fainted!

Umby sent out Kangaskhan!

Galadriel restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Umby decides to sacrifice Omastar, which leaves me at a 5-4 advantage. His remaining team - a weakened Tentacruel, a healthy-but-paralyzed Kangaskhan, and what is most likely a Ninetales. I have a fairly healthy but crippled Cradily, which I plan to sacrifice soon, a Lanturn which is at moderate health, which I plan to keep alive, a Sandslash in the exact same situation, a fairly healthy Muk, and an unrevealed Pinsir. Lanturn and Sandslash and Muk will be key here.

Start of turn 33
Triangles 33 called Galadriel back!
Triangles 33 sent out Elendil! (Cradily)
Elendil is hurt by spikes!

vs.

The foe's Kangaskhan used Double-Edge!
It's not very effective...
A critical hit!
Elendil lost 180 HP! (48% of its health)
The foe's Kangaskhan is hit with recoil!

Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil is hurt by poison!
The foe's Kangaskhan restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Cradily gets critted, but I was essentially bringing it in for sacrifice so that Sandslash could get in safely and gain Leftovers.

Start of turn 34

vs.

Elendil used Earthquake!
The foe's Kangaskhan lost 26% of its health!

The foe's Kangaskhan used Wish!

Elendil restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Elendil is hurt by poison!
The foe's Kangaskhan restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

I stay in and allow myself to be Toxic-stalled to death. Luckily, I am Toxic-stalled to death after a turn in which Kangaskhan recieves Wish, as opposed to using it, so that Sandslash has an easier job and Umby is unable to pass the wish.

The foe's Tentacruel used Substitute!
The foe's Tentacruel made a substitute!

Umby's Hydro Pump misses Muk. I don't think 2 HPumps from 96 SpA invested Tenta KO, although he may have invested more, it being the spies team and all.

Triangles 33 won the battle!
Triangles 33: gg
Umby: gg

gg indeed. Overall, I played OK - I was outpredicted, but I "out-foresighted" him. Foresight is a skill I feel like I've only recently acquired. The battle had some luck, mainly on my side, with those Sleep Powder misses, but overall it was an exciting tense game and ADV UU is definitely something I'd recommend.

Props:
Umby, for being a top-class and sporting opponent.
Lanturn, for being strong and very influential and taking that Sludge Bomb
Sandslash, for spinning like a don at key moments in the game.
Muk, for being badass overall - a great wrecking ball
Umby's Tentacruel, for being a constant threat to my team

Slops:
Sleep Powder missing twice, and all other hax
Pinsir, for being raither useless.
