[GP READY 0/2] Breloom

breloom.png

Pokedex Number
- #286

[Pros]

Breloom has a godsend ability in Technician and an excellent movepool to abuse it

Access to Spore, the only perfectly accurate sleep move, makes Breloom difficult to switch into

Technician boosted priority along with a massive base 130 Attack leads to devastation

[Cons]

Breloom lacks bulk and sports weaknesses to many common attacking types

Base 70 speed leaves a lot to be desired on an offensive Pokemon

Breloom's STABs have a large list of resistances among top tier threats

Grass-type Pokemon are now immune to Spore

Breloom@Life Orb/Focus Sash
Ability: Technician
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant/Jolly Nature
- Spore/Force Palm
- Mach Punch
- Bullet Seed
- Rock Tomb

Spore forces the opponent to be extremely cautious with their counters, allowing Breloom to toss around Technician-boosted attacks with ease. Bullet Seed has the potential to reach 187.5 base power and spells doom for many slower foes, such as defensive Ground- and Water-types. Breloom's STAB combination of a high-powered muti-hit move and a priority move is excellent but faces many resistances. Rock Tomb allows Breloom to KO Volcarona and Talonflame on the switch. As far as the item is concerned, Life Orb is more consistent in increasing damage output; however, Focus Sash can get off a guaranteed Spore early game.

An Adamant nature is recommended for maximum power but Jolly has the benefit of speed tying other base 70 Pokemon. Force Palm is a worthy option due to Spore's nerf. It KOs Fighting-weak Pokemon such as Chansey and Ferrothorn that Mach Punch cannot as well as possessing a nifty chance to paralyze the foe. U-Turn and Volt Switch are excellent ways to bring Breloom in safely because Breloom really cannot tank attacks at all. Pokemon such as Aegislash and Dragonite can set up on Breloom so partners like Hippowdon that can check or counter these foes are necessary.

[Checks and Counters]

Amoonguss is immune to Spore, packs useful resistances to Breloom's STABs, and has Sludge Bomb to threaten it. Additionally, Regenerator keeps Amoonguss healthy to counter Breloom throughout the match. Venusaur functions in a similar, albeit less reliable manner. Gourgeist and Trevenant are immune to Spore and Fighting-type moves and easily wall Breloom. Gliscor has its own Poison Heal to stall out Breloom but much watch out for a boosted Bullet Seed. Once Sleep Clause is activated, more counters are viable. Aegislash takes a pittance from any of Breloom's moves and can easily KO in return. Gengar is somewhat frail, but it resists Grass-type moves and does not fear Mach Punch. Hawlucha, Dragonite, and other Flying-type Pokemon only need to watch out for Rock Tomb.

Any faster Pokemon that can survive a Mach Punch and KO Breloom serves as a fine check. Grass-type Pokemon are difficult for Breloom to set up on because they cannot be put to sleep with Spore. Jolly Mamoswine can end Breloom's parade with a super-effective Ice Shard. Breloom's pathetic uninvested bulk prevents it from switching in on most offensive Pokemon, so constant pressure keeps it at bay. Volcarona can use Breloom without Rock Tomb as set up fodder and threaten a burn with Flame Body.

Grass types are immune to spore, resist Bullet Seed/Seed Bomb. Ergo things like Amoonguss, Venusaur, and Whimsicott are hard counters, regardless of Sleep Clause.

I really would like to see Rock Tomb getting a mention on Breloom. While Breloom sadly misses out on out speeding a -1 MEGA Gengar (and by like 1 point too :[), it can still hit normal Gengar on the switch. Rock Tomb is also pretty nice for hitting Talonflame if something else is already Spore'd. While it also serves as a really nice way to control Speed now that Low Sweep has been nerfed, something that Breloom greatly appreciates..

Maybe slash it with Swords Dance on the first set? Also maybe slash Focus Sash as well, since that set is still pretty viable, especially with Rock Tomb.

So QC agreed to getting rid of the Subpunching set on Breloom due to the many nerfs that it got sadly in addition to the surge in checks and counters to this set in particular, please remove it.

Also Fighting Gem isn't currently available I think, so make sure to remove that as an option.

Where da Poison Heal sets at?

Leech Seed would probably go along with Poison Heal, and for now I don't really see it working very well. While Leech Seed Loom has been very annoying previous Gens, I just don't see it being very good this time around. It would definitely fall under the Poison Heal category, although Leech Seed does kind of have a niche where it doesn't completely rely on Spore. OO material though at best, which isn't being included for awhile.

Although then again Celebi isn't here, but you still have Pokemon that do indeed straight up wall this thing like that Pumpkin dude.

-With the nerf of Spore I wouldnt say that Breloom is incredibly hard to counter anymore.

-Brief mention that Rock Tomb can finish of switch-ins such as Talonflame and Volcarona

-Gourgiest and Trevenant need mentioning as solid counters.

Once that is done..

QC APPROVED 1/3

Read through this and I have a few comments before I QC:

-Remove mention of Poison Heal as there is no set in the analysis with it, or at least severely down play it because if it was so potent there would be a set based around it.

-I'd also move the slash with Swords Dance / Rock Slide down to the 4th moveslot.

Pokemon such as Aegislash and Dragonite can set up on Breloom so partners that can check or counter these foes are necessary.

I would prefer if you actually listed some examples of Pokemon that can do this

Gengar is somewhat frail, but it resists Grass-type moves and does not fear Mach Punch. Hawlucha, Dragonite, and other Flying-type Pokemon only need to watch out for Stone Edge.

Please change to Rock Tomb.

Volcarona can use Breloom as set up fodder and threaten a burn with Flame Body.

mention how this is only for Breloom that lack Rock Tomb.

Has anyone ever tested Power Up Punch on Breloom? I personally can't vouch for it as I've never used it before, but it does look interesting. A Swords Dance + Mach Punch combination does less than Power Up Punch + Mach Punch in the span of two turns, and lets you damage slower threats while boosting your attack. This would be good for things like Tyranitar who sometimes pack a fire-type move to pick off unsuspecting Breloom as well as Forry and Ferro, but Power Up Punch lets you kill it while setting up in the process. If the Tyranitar user would switch, then Power Up Punch + Mach Punch still does more damage to the switch in than Swords Dance + Mach Punch. From what I can theorymon atm, Swords Dance would be good for a long term sweep while Power Up Punch would be better for the short term. Also, bringing in arguments such as Power Up Punch being unable to boost on Ghosts is pretty irrelevant considering how Aegislash, Gengar, and Trevenant all mess with Breloom extremely hard to begin with.

Again, this is just based off theory, and Breloom already is tight on moveslots to begin with. I'll probably test this later in the week when I'm not as busy, but it seems pretty neat in concept.

Just saw this on a second brief look through. Also, gonna delay giving this a 3rd check just so Plus and others can check out Power Up Punch~~

Can Fury cutter get a mention once Pokebank is here? :[

Imo, Swords Dance shouldnt be slashed period, the best bet Loom has as of right now is a 3 attacks lead set, with 95% of teams running a ghost, specially aegislash which hard walls once Sleep Clause is activated, and Rock Tomb is now more viable and important than ever due to Gengar and Talonflame being solid S-ranks, and it gives you a way to hit through the most important dragon right now, Dnite.

I shouldve elaborated on it a bit more, but w/e.

I agree with Stone RG, Swords Dance is shit. How exactly are you sweeping or wallbreaking with Trevenant, Talonflame, Gengar, Mega Venusaur, Aegislash, and Togekiss everywhere? Spore + 3 attacks it the only way Breloom is viable, as Rock Tomb is indeed a must to not give free switches to Mega Gengar, Togekiss, and Talonflame, and the Speed drop in general makes you much harder to play around. I would also remove Focus Sash; Breloom needs all the power it can get, and it's not such a good lead anymore when you don't have SD to start wrecking things after you put something to sleep and when so many Pokemon hard wall you (even with Spore taken into account). The main moveset should be this:

move 1: Spore / Force Palm
move 2: Mach Punch
move 3: Bullet Seed
move 4: Rock Tomb

Spore is great but useless against teams with Venusaur, Trevenant, Mandibuzz, Forretress (which can use you as set up fodder without Force Palm), and Gourgeist (and Celebi when it gets released). Not to mention that Sleep Talkers are very common, and in general putting something to sleep is not as detrimental as it once was. Force Palm lets you paralyze some of your counters and OHKO Fighting weak Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Chansey if the need arises, and also lets you deal meaningful damage to Chesnaught. There are many times when you are going to need a real Fighting STAB as Mach Punch just doesn't cut it against defensive Pokemon.

I'm not QC, but I've really liked the combination of Talonflame+Breloom. Talonflame checks Volc for Loom, it lures in TTar, Hippo, Rotom-W, and many other things and then it can U-turn out of those pokemon to bring in Breloom. In return, Breloom can surprise kill other Talonflame for your own Talonflame, and Loom also lures out Venu, Aegislash, Amoonguss, Gourgiest, Trevenant, etc. Which are all things Talonflame can take advantage of. Both of these pokemon also beat down on checks/counter that they share like Gliscor.

If this was already mentioned then ignore me.
