fire emblem!!! yeah, grinding is bad - on normal/hard mode. just wait until you play fucking lunatic mode, or lunatic+ (which i am kind of afraid to try, apparently the enemies have randomly generated skills that they shouldn't have for their class to completely fuck you up/make the game more luck based than ever. i am ascared.)

this installment of FE is fast becoming my favorite - the DLC for one is incredibly cool for allowing you to recruit (via money or winning fights) older characters from previous games (i guess i won't go into specifics because spoilers!!) and when i learned that i lost a fraction of my shit. aaaa, just, the reclassing thing to get certain skills and orchestrating what skills will be inherited by your children depending on what units you marry is just soooo great, i am obsessed with the level of customization that exists in this game, which for me, has always been a major selling point for the FE series (though usually it's just customizing what units you build your army with, but being able to have an infinite number of combos gives such huge replay value), and to add on top the reclassing/skill sets/units you can only recruit via certain marriages, it takes it so such an intricate level of planning that it truly defines itself as a strategy RPG.

also retaining the forging system is cool, though i think they've kept that since 9/10? so whatever. too bad you can't change the color of your weapon still, though. i made ricken a dark knight and forged him his own sword (the RickSlash) with really high MT because his strength was dreadful, but he was still fucking useless because he was so slow. couldn't double, got doubled by everything. god i hate ricken.

also also, being able to streetpass is really neat!! all the wireless/wifi capabilities are neato, though the only thing that is sort of bad for the game is using your bonus box to "fight" certain enemies and being able to buy their weapons, so you have Brave weapons when you're in chapter 2, and it makes the difficulty level decrease immensely for only gold, which you won't have much of anyway, unless you're abusing the DLC gold-getting chapter…

blah blah blah i could talk about FE for years so what else i'm interested in is:

the rerelease of Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons for virtual console on 3ds. i've replay both games a lot already, but playing them on a 3DS and having all the scenery in bright, vivid colors is going to be absolutely lovely. i'm sure the music will be a bit more developed as well, but even if not, going to play the SHIT out of those two. so excited!

I bought the new Castlevania yesterday (a day early, because JB-Hifi never know when they're supposed to put stuff on the shelves or hold it for pre-orders).

There was a lot of talk in the previews about how it's not a 2D Castlevania like the old ones, but it is. The gameplay is all sidescrolling, but with 3D environments.

The biggest difference is that you can't really "die" now, there are no Game Overs. If you fall too far, lose all your life, or fall on spikes you die and then get restored to the last position you were in. Boss fights are quite difficult, they're all multi-stage and it's incredibly hard not to die given there are no healing items, but death just means you get revived at the beginning of the current phase of the boss with reduced life.

I don't know whether that's an improvement or a detraction; it means they can ramp boss and platforming difficulty up, but it also means you don't have much to lose by fucking up, so you get a little bit "I wanna be the guy" about it.

The division of the game into different chapters where you play as different characters is well done; there are various cross-over scenes where Character A is helped by a mysterious figure, and then Character B is the mysterious figure helping Character A in the next chapter. They do a good job of making the characters feel distinct (each has their own subweapons and magic spells that are all quite distinct).

The voice acting is solid (but still not as good as "Die Monster, you don't belong in this world"), although Scottish Rumplestiltzkin Dracula is a bit unusual since he's supposed to be Romanian, but there are various voice-acting-related-spoilers in this new continuity.

Worth buying if you're a 3DS-owning platformer fan or Castlevania fan, but probably not buying a 3DS for, IMO.

Just out of curiosity, is it like the older ones or more like the castleroid ones? And how long is it do you think?

So I hit the 100 hour benchmark on Awakening. After runs through normal, hard and lunatic (go to hell lunatic+), I finally went back and grinded for a team to take on the second series DLC. Will post screenshots if anyone cares as soon as I figure out how to make them near legible (if only 3ds capture cards weren't $200+...)

Has anyone been able to complete a no grinding hard mode run? I'm intrigued by this notion... I know it'd probably be impossible on lunatic tho ><

Hard mode isn't that difficult. I know of multiple people, including myself, who have completed a no-grinding hard mode run. Lunatic/Lunatic+ are completely different stories, though.

Also, I've been playing Castlevania since its release 5 days ago, and it is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Bosses are brutal.

Lunatic is horrible. I had a hard time getting past the fucking prologue.

and yeah, MoF is pretty hard, a lot more so than I was expecting

also yeah i did my first run on hard mode, it wasn't hard at all

While I'm here, thoughts on the new Luigi's Mansion and whether or not it looks "worth" it?

I'd like to get it, it looks really cool but I'm completely broke and I still need to get VLR.

Although I'm getting a ton of money next week so I'll PROBABLY pick it up

It's like the Metroidvania ones, but souped up.

The combat skills are more about multiple hit combos (very easily executed- just mash Y or X) etc., rather than making more powerful whips. It makes every combat more significant (like, you can't just floor-scoot through an army of zombies).

The exploration aspect is still there, though it's a little more disjointed.

I've just completed the second chapter at 100% (i.e. all life/mana/weapon/exp ups found, full map), starting the final chapter, and I'm around 9 hours of game time on the clock, but I think that isn't counting the frequent die-and-resets.

The first boss was crazy hard, but I found Death ludicrously easy - didn't die once.

The other bosses have been of moderate difficulty, but since you can't actually -lose- I don't know if hard is the right word.

Chapter 2 has some really badass quicktime-event boss finishes, though.

Nah man, just get VLR. It's too good to pass up.

On another note, I found this image to be very hilarious:

just as a heads up, Oracle of Ages and Seasons are going to be released on the US eshop "before summer".

Better get your 3DS funds loaded for two great games!

this will cause the price of my gameboy color versions to plummet won't it (not that I ever intended to sell them, as I would probably still only get like 10 dollars each and there's always nostalgia)

Today at school I saw a magazine opened to a big Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon ad, and I flipped the cover open and saw it was a teen girl social life magazine. The magazine even highly recommended the game in its "Tech to-get" section.

Seems like Nintendo really wants to branch out their market for this type of game

Nintendo needs to expand their markets. And I think nintendo has learned how well they do if they advertise their stuff well. Awakening was the first FE that was widely advertised and look at how well it's doing right now

I will buy these. I own them both, have replayed them multiple times. But I will buy them again.

I had them both when I was a kid, but they've since disappeared over the years, so they're an easy sale for me

EDIT:

Pikachu edition 3DS XL is coming to the states on March 24th!

Target will be retailing this 3DS XL for 169.99 when it launches, so pick one up if you can! It's a great deal!

It's not a question of advertisement if you have so goddamn little to advertise to begin with, really.

Flipnote Studio 3DS has been announced for the eshop!

actually some of Nintendo's new stuff looks really good. Dark Moon seems like it's going to be a great game.

Are you sure that's real or that it's going to be when the Pikachu 3DS releases? The 3DS is coming out around March 24-26, right? That image also states that the Luigi's Mansion and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 3DS games are "Available Now", but to my knowledge those aren't going to be out for some time yet.

Pokemon mystery dungeon is a march release. If it's not out already it'll be out by that point. Pretty sure it's the same with Luigi's Mansion as well
