Offense vs. Balance: An OU Warstory

Hey everyone. After a great battle today between mrsockyman and I, I decided that I would do my first warstory here on Smogon, so bear with me and let me know how I can improve. Here are the teams:

IcyMan28's Team

Mrsockyman's Team

mrsockyman sent out Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Iceman28 sent out Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).

Heatran- 100%
Starmie- 100%

The match begins, and I'm off to an unfavorable start. I havn't faced too many Starmie leads lately, so I figure its a TrickScarfer and go for the Stealth Rock.
---

Starmie used Surf.
It's super effective!
Heatran lost 90% of its health.
Heatran used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!

Heatran- 10%
Starmie- 100%

Ouch, that mistake cost me. At least I'm right about the Scarf, so he must be onto my ScarfTran. Oh well. Stealth Rocks are down, and I can keep Heatran for some death fodder later.
---

Iceman28 switched in Cresselia (lvl 100 Cresselia ?).
Starmie used Surf.
Cresselia lost 21% of its health.

Cresselia- 85%
Starmie- 100%

Cresselia shrugs off Starmie's hits like nothing. She isn't really offensive, but her bulk is valued on the team and she can become somewhat of a threat with Charge Beam. I decide to use just that.
---

mrsockyman switched in Celebi (lvl 100 Celebi).
Pointed stones dug into Celebi.
Celebi lost 12% of its health.
Cresselia used Charge Beam.
It's not very effective...
Celebi lost 3% of its health.
Cresselia's special attack was raised.

Cresselia- 91%
Celebi- 91%

In comes Celebi to absorb the Charge Beam, but Cresselia's sp.atk is raised in the process. I'll go ahead and Ice Beam to see what it does.
---

Celebi used Leech Seed.
Celebi's attack missed!
Cresselia used Ice Beam.
It's super effective!
Celebi lost 42% of its health.

Cresselia- 97%
Celebi- 55%

Not only do I scout its attack, but it also misses and gives me a free Ice Beam, which, thanks to the Charge Beam boost, does quite a bit of damage. I'll go for it again to keep this Celebi low on HP.
---

Celebi used Leech Seed.
Cresselia was seeded!
Cresselia used Ice Beam.
It's super effective!
Celebi lost 40% of its health.

Cresselia's health was sapped by leech seed!
Cresselia lost 12% of its health.
Celebi regained health!
Celebi restored 14% of its health.

Cresselia- 88%
Celebi- 35%

It works pretty well, but I don't want my Cresselia sapped of her HP this early in the match, and an obvious Recover is on its way. Time to bring in Heatran.
---

Iceman28 switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Celebi used Recover.
Celebi restored 50% of its health.

Heatran- 10%
Celebi- 91%

I get Heatran in safely, and I decide that I'm pretty safe and can Fire Blast at this point.
---

mrsockyman switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Pointed stones dug into Heatran.
Heatran lost 12% of its health.
Heatran used Fire Blast.
Heatran's Flash Fire raised its fire power!

Heatran- 10%
Heatran- 94%

Ugh. I should have been more careful. Now I have an opposing Heatran bothering me, probably scarfed. Cress can handle it but still...Heatran is weak enough as it is, so I'll just sacrifice it and bring in something else later.
---

mrsockyman switched in Blissey (lvl 100 Blissey ?).
Pointed stones dug into Blissey.
Blissey lost 12% of its health.
Heatran used Fire Blast.
A critical hit!
Blissey lost 47% of its health.

Heatran- 10%
Blissey- 47%

And luck shines on me for the time being. Apparently he lacks Earth Power (or was trying to predict a switch to Cress), and so I score on Blissey with a critical Fire Blast. Here comes the Softboiled...
---

Iceman28 switched in Metagross (lvl 100 Metagross).
Blissey used Softboiled.
Blissey restored 50% of its health.

Metagross- 100%
Blissey- 100%

Metagross comes out, frightening Blissey with its monstrous attack, further bolstered by a Choice Band. I decide to Earthquake to hit Heatran since he is probably thinking Meteor Mash.
---

mrsockyman switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Pointed stones dug into Gliscor.
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.
Metagross used Earthquake.
It doesn't affect Gliscor...

Metagross- 100%
Gliscor- 94%

Dang it. I mispredict and give Gliscor a free switch. Oh well. It won't cost me much, since Gliscor can't do anything to Cresselia and Meta is still at full health.
---

Iceman28 switched in Cresselia (lvl 100 Cresselia ?).
Cresselia makes ground moves miss with Levitate!
Gliscor used Earthquake.
Gliscor's attack missed!

Cresselia- 94%
Gliscor- 100%

Earthquake misses, and I go for the Ice Beam, even though I know Blissey is coming in.
---

mrsockyman switched in Celebi (lvl 100 Celebi).
Pointed stones dug into Celebi.
Celebi lost 12% of its health.
Cresselia used Ice Beam.
It's super effective!
Celebi lost 26% of its health.

Cresselia- 100%
Celebi- 59%

Strangely enough, he brings in Celebi to take the Ice Beam. He's probably planning to Recover, so I try an Ice Beam.
---

Celebi used U-turn.
It's super effective!
Cresselia lost 17% of its health.
mrsockyman switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Pointed stones dug into Heatran.
Heatran lost 12% of its health.
Cresselia used Ice Beam.
It's not very effective...
Heatran lost 4% of its health.

Cresselia- 89%
Heatran- 84%

Looks like he was scouting a switch. Ice Beam bounces off of Heatran's steel hide, but Stealth Rock damage is a nice consolation. Heatran isn't hurting Cress anytime soon, so I stay and decide to Charge Beam until I can do enough damage to force it out.
---

Heatran used Stealth Rock.
Cresselia used Charge Beam.
Heatran lost 9% of its health.
Cresselia's special attack was raised.

Cresselia- 95%
Heatran- 81%

I sigh as Stealth Rocks come onto my side of the field. I know that this makes my own Heatran completely useless, but I figure I can find an opportunity to use this to my advantage.
---

mrsockyman switched in Blissey (lvl 100 Blissey ?).
Pointed stones dug into Blissey.
Blissey lost 12% of its health.
Cresselia used Charge Beam.
Blissey lost 5% of its health.
Cresselia's special attack was raised.

Cresselia- 100%
Blissey- 89%

Blissey sponges Cress' attack with ease, so I bring in Metagross to take it on. I'm not too worried about a Thunder Wave because Meta is already slow and bulky, being the Band variant, and it carries Bullet Punch for emergency speed situations.
---

Iceman28 switched in Metagross (lvl 100 Metagross).
Pointed stones dug into Metagross.
Metagross lost 6% of its health.
Blissey used Thunder Wave.
Metagross is paralysed! It may be unable to move!

Metagross- 94%
Blissey- 95%

I predict his attack perfectly, and Meta is unfazed by the attack. I choose Meteor Mash to crush Gliscor as it comes in.
---

mrsockyman switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Pointed stones dug into Gliscor.
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.
Metagross is paralysed! It can't move!

Metagross- 94%
Gliscor- 94%

And the hax turns against me this time, leaving Meta fully paralyzed and Gliscor comes in safely. Back to Cresselia then.
---

Iceman28 switched in Cresselia (lvl 100 Cresselia ?).
Pointed stones dug into Cresselia.
Cresselia lost 12% of its health.
Gliscor used Taunt.
Cresselia fell for the taunt!

Cresselia- 94%
Gliscor- 100%

I'm not sure what the purpose of Taunt was...maybe he thought it was AgiliGross and sought to prevent that. Either way, Cress can nail it with Ice Beam, and I'm not concerned about being unable to Rest thanks to a healthy 94% HP.
---

mrsockyman switched in Celebi (lvl 100 Celebi).
Pointed stones dug into Celebi.
Celebi lost 12% of its health.
Cresselia used Ice Beam.
It's super effective!
Celebi lost 27% of its health.

Cresselia- 100%
Celebi- 26%

Celebi comes in again and is worn down ridiculously low. I know Recover is coming, and I figure that sacrificing Heatran for a switch now is better than having to switch it in when one of his pokemon are setting up (especially the last one, which I fear is an SDLuke).
---

Iceman28 switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Pointed stones dug into Heatran.
Heatran lost 10% of its health.
Iceman28's Heatran fainted.
Celebi used Recover.
Celebi restored 50% of its health.

Heatran- 0%
Celebi- 82%

5-6

After a long while, the first pokemon falls, but Heatran did more than enough by laying out Stealth Rock and being able to come in at 10%. It's time to settle the score.
---

Iceman28 switched in Metagross (lvl 100 Metagross).
Pointed stones dug into Metagross.
Metagross lost 6% of its health.
Celebi used U-turn.
Metagross lost 11% of its health.
mrsockyman switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Pointed stones dug into Gliscor.
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.
Metagross is paralysed! It can't move!

Metagross- 77%
Gliscor- 94%

I bring in Metagross, knowing that I can now Meteor Mash for deadly damage. I expect Gliscor to come in, and am annoyed at Celebi's little bit of U-Turn damage. Once again, though, Meta is fully paralyzed, and nothing significant happens this turn.
---

Iceman28 switched in Zapdos (lvl 100 Zapdos).
Zapdos is exerting its pressure!
Pointed stones dug into Zapdos.
Zapdos lost 25% of its health.
Gliscor used Taunt.
Zapdos fell for the taunt!

Zapdos- 75%
Gliscor- 100%

A Cresselia switch is obvious, so I decide that it's time to reveal Zapdos and have it partake in the match. Taunt stops me from Roosting, which is unfortunate.
---

mrsockyman switched in Blissey (lvl 100 Blissey ?).
Pointed stones dug into Blissey.
Blissey lost 12% of its health.
Zapdos used Heat Wave.
Blissey lost 18% of its health.
Zapdos lost 10% of its health.

Zapdos- 65%
Blissey- 65%

Blissey takes the Heat Wave, and both pokemon have equal health. Too bad I can't Roost. Oh well - Metagross can come in and absorb the Thunder Wave, then try once again to Meteor Mash.
---

Iceman28 switched in Metagross (lvl 100 Metagross).
Pointed stones dug into Metagross.
Metagross lost 6% of its health.
Blissey used Seismic Toss.
Metagross lost 28% of its health.

Metagross- 43%
Blissey- 71%

It Seismic Tosses, which is not what I wanted. I cross my fingers for a Meteor Mash, since otherwise, I lost a pokemon for nothing.
---

Blissey used Seismic Toss.
Metagross lost 28% of its health.
Metagross used Meteor Mash.
Blissey lost 76% of its health.
mrsockyman's Blissey fainted.
Metagross's attack was raised.

Metagross- 15%
Blissey- 0%

5-5

Metagross rips through Blissey with its iron fist, raising its attack in the process. I realize that with such low health and speed, it is open to revenge killing. It has, however, removed Blissey from play and that is more than enough.
---

mrsockyman switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Pointed stones dug into Starmie.
Starmie lost 12% of its health.
Starmie used Surf.
Metagross lost 16% of its health.
Iceman28's Metagross fainted.

Metagross- 0%
Starmie- 88%

4-5

The enemy Starmie quickly avenges the death of its teammate, but the Scarfed SpeedStar takes Stealth Rock damage in the process.
---

Iceman28 switched in Cresselia (lvl 100 Cresselia ?).
Pointed stones dug into Cresselia.
Cresselia lost 12% of its health.
mrsockyman switched in Celebi (lvl 100 Celebi).
Pointed stones dug into Celebi.
Celebi lost 12% of its health.
Cresselia used Charge Beam.
It's not very effective...
Celebi lost 4% of its health.
Cresselia's special attack was raised.

Cresselia- 88%
Celebi- 72%

Cresselia returns to block Starmie's offense, and is once again me with Celebi. Charge Beam boosts the sp.atk.
---

Celebi used Leech Seed.
Celebi's attack missed!
Cresselia used Ice Beam.
It's super effective!
Celebi lost 37% of its health.

Cresselia- 94%
Celebi- 41%

The multiple para hax on Metagross is resolved by the miss of Leech Seed, and Celebi takes a chilling Ice Beam.
---

Celebi used Leech Seed.
Cresselia was seeded!
Cresselia used Ice Beam.
It's super effective!
Celebi lost 36% of its health.
Cresselia's health was sapped by leech seed!
Cresselia lost 12% of its health.
Celebi regained health!
Celebi restored 14% of its health.

Cresselia- 88%
Celebi- 25%

A second Ice Beam reduces Celebi to near death, but it quickly recovers with Leftovers and Leech Seed. Recover is clearly next, but I don't want the boosted sp.atk to go to waste just yet, and Ice Beam once again.
---

Celebi used Recover.
Celebi restored 50% of its health.
Cresselia used Ice Beam.
It's super effective!
Celebi lost 37% of its health.
Cresselia's health was sapped by leech seed!
Cresselia lost 12% of its health.
Celebi regained health!
Celebi restored 14% of its health.

Cresselia- 82%
Celebi- 58%

Now Cresselia is losing more health, and I decide its time to stop this Celebi cold. Its time to bring in Salamence.
---

Iceman28 switched in Salamence (lvl 100 Salamence ?).
Salamence's intimidate cut Celebi's attack!
Pointed stones dug into Salamence.
Salamence lost 25% of its health.
Celebi used Leaf Storm.
It's not very effective...
Salamence lost 18% of its health.
Celebi's special attack was harshly lowered.

Salamence- 57%
Celebi- 64%

The great dragon is more concerned with the Stealth Rocks than the farie's Leaf Storm, but it still survives with plenty of health. I know that he is probably predicting fire blast, and will most likely go to Heatran to absorb it. On the other hand, he may realize my thought process and go to Gliscor to handle it, especially since DDOutrageMence are so common these days...
---

mrsockyman switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Pointed stones dug into Gliscor.
Gliscor lost 12% of its health.
Salamence used Draco Meteor.
Gliscor lost 88% of its health.
mrsockyman's Gliscor fainted.
Salamence's special attack was harshly lowered.
Salamence lost 10% of its health.

Salamence- 47%
Gliscor- 0%

4-4

The trap works, as Gliscor is stricken down by a Draco Meteor. With so much emphasis on Mence's Outrage, many people seem to be forgetting that Draco Meteor is an option, and this works to my advantage.
---

mrsockyman switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Pointed stones dug into Starmie.
Starmie lost 12% of its health.
Iceman28 switched in Cresselia (lvl 100 Cresselia ?).
Pointed stones dug into Cresselia.
Cresselia lost 12% of its health.
Starmie used Ice Beam.
Cresselia lost 15% of its health.

Cresselia- 61%
Starmie- 75%

I don't want an Ice Beam to be Salamence's early death, and Cresselia once again comes in to take the blow. Starmie can't do anything, so I decide that a Rest will ensure that Cress continues to take hits.
---

mrsockyman switched in Scizor (lvl 100 Scizor ?).
Pointed stones dug into Scizor.
Scizor lost 12% of its health.
Cresselia used Rest.
Cresselia fell asleep!
Cresselia restored 40% of its health.

Cresselia- 100%
Scizor- 94%

Finally, his final pokemon comes in. I'm wary of an SD X-Scissor, and I don't want my only defensive pokemon to go down so easily. At this point, I figure that Salamence's Intimidate can be of some use, even if it falls to Bullet Punch after Stealth Rock. Looking back, Zapdos would have been the better choice, letting me take both Bullet Punch and X-Scissor and live to Roost off the damage. Oh well.
---

Iceman28 switched in Salamence (lvl 100 Salamence ?).
Salamence's intimidate cut Scizor's attack!
Pointed stones dug into Salamence.
Salamence lost 25% of its health.
Scizor used Swords Dance.
Scizor's attack was sharply raised.

Salamence- 22%
Scizor- 100%

Salamence's Intimidate prevents it from fulling powering up, and I know that Salamence has done enough for this match.
---

Scizor used Bullet Punch.
A critical hit!
Salamence lost 22% of its health.
Iceman28's Salamence fainted.

Salamence- 0%
Scizor- 100%

3-4

As I expected, Bullet Punch KOs, putting MrSocksMan back in control of the battle. Time to bring in Zapdos. Without Blissey, there will be little that can stop it.
---

Iceman28 switched in Zapdos (lvl 100 Zapdos).
Zapdos is exerting its pressure!
Pointed stones dug into Zapdos.
Zapdos lost 25% of its health.
mrsockyman switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Pointed stones dug into Heatran.
Heatran lost 12% of its health.
Zapdos used Roost.
Zapdos restored 50% of its health.

Zapdos- 90%
Heatran- 75%

I have Zapdos Roost up to almost perfect health as he brings in Heatran, and I plan to send Heatran to its death with a devastating Thunderbolt.
---

Zapdos used Thunderbolt.
Heatran lost 71% of its health.
Zapdos lost 10% of its health.
Heatran used Fire Blast.
Zapdos lost 78% of its health.

Zapdos- 2%
Heatran- 10%

Unfortunately, Heatran has other plans, and survives with 4%. Meanwhile, it Fire Blasts Zapdos down to 12% and the pokemon's items each do their work. I see that Roosting will be of little consequence as well. Zapdos is going down, but it's taking Heatran with it.
---

Zapdos used Thunderbolt.
Heatran lost 10% of its health.
mrsockyman's Heatran fainted.
Zapdos lost 2% of its health.
Iceman28's Zapdos fainted.

2-3

I take out Heatran, but the match is still in his favor. I need to do something - fast. He doesn't know of my final pokemon yet, which can KO 2 of his 3 remaining pokemon. I decide that it is the best way to go.
---

mrsockyman switched in Scizor (lvl 100 Scizor ?).
Iceman28 switched in Infernape (lvl 100 Infernape ?).
Pointed stones dug into Infernape.
Infernape lost 12% of its health.
Pointed stones dug into Scizor.
Scizor lost 12% of its health.
mrsockyman switched in Celebi (lvl 100 Celebi).

Infernape used Grass Knot.
It's not very effective...
Celebi lost 2% of its health.

Infernape- 88%
Celebi- 56%

He realizes the unfavorable matchup for Scizor, and apparently brings in Celebi as death fodder to have Starmie come in and wash Infernape away. Thus, my Grass Knot is worthless.
---

Infernape used Flamethrower.
It's super effective!
Celebi lost 55% of its health.
mrsockyman's Celebi fainted.

Infernape- 88%
Celebi- 0%

2-2

All is not lost, however, as the Expert Belt gave my opponent the impression of a Choice Item, and now Celebi has burns to pay for the mistake. The match is tied, 2 to 2. It's anyone's game, and it will take some smart playing to outdo his two sweepers, both of which have an advantage on my pokemon.
---

mrsockyman switched in Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie).
Pointed stones dug into Starmie.
Starmie lost 12% of its health.
Iceman28 switched in Cresselia (lvl 100 Cresselia ?).

Starmie used Surf.
Cresselia lost 25% of its health.

Cresselia- 69%
Starmie- 63%

I bring Cress out once again to take on Starmie, who is slowly being worn down by the Stealth Rocks. I Sleep Talk to waste a turn of sleep off, knowing that Scizor is coming in. I feel like giving it a free SD is irrelevant, since Infernape is highly resistant to the steel type and can probably take a +2 Bullet Punch. Aside from that, it doesn't have a Life Orb, which minimizes the risk.

Pros

-Smart switching by both sides.
-Good prediction.
-Cresselia for taking so many hits.

Cons

-A good bit of hax on both sides.
-Using Salamence to take Scizor instead of Zapdos.
-A bad start on my part.
-Quick Attack hax: Infernape survived at 1%.

Well, that's it then. Let me know how I did, what you likes, what you didn't like, etc.

Wow sure did get alot of SpA increases with charge beam.
I really liked the opponents use of starmie celebi and scizor.

A bit haxy (especially the Quick Attack by Scizor) but good for a first warstory.
Yeah that's true. I'll add that in a second.

Wow sure did get alot of SpA increases with charge beam.
I really liked the opponents use of starmie celebi and scizor.
Well Charge Beam does have a 70% chance of doing so, so there is that.

Thanks for the comments, though. Keep them coming.

not a bad warstory but a lot of your comments just retold what happened in the past turn rather than giving true insoght into the predictions.

Alright first warstory, but your predictions were pretty sloppy. You need to predict more agressively to get your big threats in with a team as offensive as yours, where as you relied on Cresselia too much as your transition pokemon. Granted it worked, but you were lucky to come away with that. Not a bad effort though, keep on writing :)
