OU Teambuilding Competition
Given by Nog, which was previously approved by Subject 18 and Gary2346

Hey everyone. This is a revamp of the XY OU version that I will be running and updating weekly. Let me explain how it works briefly and then we can get started. It was run last generation by Remedy and George Eliot, then this gen by Subject 18, Gary2346 and Nog before it died down, and it was received really well.

Team building is a really important part of the game. It rewards creativity and intelligence, unlike actual battling which rewards luck and mindless offense; which is why I felt like the Overused forum could use a new team building game. Past CCAT threads are cool but they fall down in trying to get us to cooperate, basically. Therefore, I'm throwing cooperation out the window. Here's how it works.

Every round, I will be picking a core of two Pokémon. Then you clever team builders go away and then come back with a completed team. Once entries are closed, the community will vote on which user's team was the most innovative and well put together, the winner gets the honor of having their name and entry immortalized in this original post, and then we move on to the next round. Hopefully we can also get some good discussion going during the process about the teams submitted and the core itself.

Rules

- Entry Submission: Okay, a team importable in HIDE tags coupled with a description of your team building process is the minimum here. Pictures are really helpful. NEW RULE - everyone must PM me the team they are wishing to submit and I must approve it before it can be posted, note that teams posted without an approval will be removed immediately. If I reject your team for whatever reason you must wait until next round to try again.

- Disputes / Copying: Obviously, there is potential for disputes over copying or people making similar entries. In general, if your team entry has the same Pokémon and similar move sets to an earlier entry, it will be disqualified. If anyone tries to abuse this by reserving an early post in the thread for their entry, please bring it to my attention and they'll be disqualified.

- Discussion and Team Changes: One part of the process is to have discussion about the teams and the core. While I'd like to keep this from being a speedy RMT thread, suggestions of improvements to entered teams are allowed. In the interests of fairness though, I'd ask that any suggestions don't involve anything more major than move set changes, and that if you've already submitted a team you won't change the Pokémon in it. Basically, just be sure that you're happy with the team before you send it in.

- No Bandwagoning : Simple rule: try to not support someone simply because you recognized his nick or because he/she has a shiny trophy.

- Users who won a round will have their vote's value doubled.

Time for an example. Say the two Pokémon chosen are Genesect and Charizard Y. An entry should look like:

Genesect @ Choice Band
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Hasty Nature
- U-turn
- Extreme Speed
- Iron Head
- Ice Beam

Hippowdon (F) @ Leftovers

Charizard (M) @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast
- Roost

/sample explanation - So when I built this team I wanted to build around Charizard Y since its a really great Pokemon in this meta game. From there I added Genesect for the momentum it brings to allow charizard to come in safely. With a Choice band Genesect can also served as a revenge killer and a late game cleaner with Extreme Speed against weakened team. Latias was added be a bulky defogger to keep rocks of the field for Charizrd and a Keldeo check. At this point I had a weakness to Aegislash and strong physical attacker so adding Hippowdon was a good fit to handle those threats. Rotom-W was added to cover Talonflame, Mega Pinsir and Azumarill. Lastly Aegislash was added since I needed a good steel type that would be able to check Latias and Latios.

Round 3 will begin. Since Gardevoir + Bisharp was used, the core used will be
+

The DragMag core was quite popular back in gen 5 and with the addition of fairies can make Magnezone even more useful as they boast a weakness to Steel. Magnezone is able to keep momentum and easier to set up with the dragon on opposing teams which makes it easier for a sweep. I figured this would give some creativity in teams as they won't all look the same (hopefully), good luck building!

Built a team and tested it for this thread and it turns out to be really successful, only to find out that the core was changed-.-

So, the first choice is which dragon to use. I decided to go with Kyurem-B because with Iron Head, it is able to deal with Fairies that Magnezone cannot trap very well. The speed allows it to outspeed Adamant Excadrill if sand isn't up. The moveset is fairly self explanatory, and the 29 HP IVs hit a Life Orb number.

Next is Magnezone. This is the standard Magnezone set. It has enough speed to outspeed 4 Speed Skarmory (the speed creep is real), and an odd number of HP to help with all kinds of residual damage. Every defensive Steel type bar Heatran is adequately handled by Magnezone. The IVs are the best way to get Hidden Power Fire.

Heatran is the biggest threat to my version of our DragMag core, as Magnezone is outsped and hit with a Lava Plume and Kyurem-B's Fusion Bolt won't always 2HKO, even after Stealth Rock. The best way to deal with Heatran is a Ground type, so I added Hippowdon. It is a great mixed wall and a very reliable Stealth Rock setter. I'm debating using Whilrwind or Rock Slide over Toxic, though. Advice here would be very much appreciated.

Kyurem-B is weak to Stealth Rock, so a Defogger is a necessity. I chose Latias because Healing Wish support is invaluable. With Life Orb recoil and the fact that it will often be outsped, Kyurem-B really appreciates the support Latias gives. I have Psyshock over Thunderbolt because Kyurem-B has Electric coverage, but nobody has Psychic moves. As with Kyurem-B, the HP IVs hit a Life Orb number.

At this point, I decided that I needed two things: a win condition and a revenge killer. For my win condition, I chose Calm Mind Keldeo. It can deal with Heatran, so Hippowdon isn't always pressured to remove it. I like Scald over Hydro Pump both for the burn chance and the fact that on a late-game cleaner, more accurate moves are usually better. The IVs are the best way to get Hidden Power Flying.

Last but not least, my revenge killer. Talonflame, along with Deoxys-S, is arguably the best revenge killer in the tier. It pairs great with Latias, and with the Speed investment it has, it outspeeds Base 110s such as the Lati twins, so I can U-Turn on them without fear. I like to lead with Talonflame and U-Turn out to a more appropriate counter-lead (except against DeoSharp teams, where I lead with Kyurem-B's Outrage to do as much damage to Deoxys as quickly as possible).

No, you probably aren't. You have to Private Message (Start a Conversation) with A Terrakion and send your team like that.

Edit: Nvm, you just need approval. Read it wrong.

To start, we used, obviously, the DragMag core. I chose Dragonite for multiple reasons, one of them being that it has absolute perfect type synergy with Magnezone, making them formidable opponents. I had a choice with Salamence too, it has superior speed and a small amount of better attack. It also could use the EdgeQuake combination. I used Dragonite, though, as it had the one thing that Salamence didn't have - ExtremeSpeed, which has crucial priority. Dragonite is the wallbreaker, I find the Dragon Dance set to be non-proficient with Magnezone. Considering Magnezone will be switching quite a bit, I believe that Dragonite will just have to take hit after hit. Next we had Choice Scarf Magnezone, a great check to Talonflame, Scizor, Ferrothorn, Forretress, and many more. Speed EVs allow you to outspeed Thundurus.

Afterwords I used Mandibuzz as Defog support, a shaky way to beat Bisharp, Conkeldurr, and most of the Physical attackers that would otherwise destroy the DragMag combo. It also supports the next member, Bulky DDance Charizard-X. Taking place of Dragonite's sweeping position, Charizard-X is a force to be reckoned with. You should already know the drill, Dragon Dance to the highest you will/can get, use Roost to stall out some Pokemon, and begin the sweep! Even Azumarill, takes 70%~ from a +1 Flare Blitz with this spread!

Greninja was a split second choice. Realizing I had no true special sweeper, I decided on Greninja, who can efficiently late-game sweep or deal heavy damage to any opposing Pokemon. This Greninja is rather standard, but does it's job well, giving this team even greater type coverage with Ice, Water, Dark, and Psychic. Finally, we are brought down to Clefable. Why did I choose this over Chansey? It's typing takes full-advantage of the DragMag combo, using Steel-Types on this team as an advantage. It is naturally used to either WishPass, set up Rocks, or just blast the crap out of every Pokemon on the opposing team.

I decided to go with the Dragon-Fairy-Steel core as the basis of my team. Magnezone already provided the Steel type, and it has excellent synergy with Dragon and Fairy types thanks to its ability to remove opposing Steels. I use enough speed on Magnezone to outrun Mega-Scizor and Heatran that have minimal investment in speed. CM Clefable is an excellent stallbreaker with Stored Power but it struggles against Steel types. CB Dragonite is a good check against offensive teams thanks to Extreme Speed and is an excellent wallbreaker with Outrage. Like Clefable, it also struggles against defensive Steel types. When these two are paired with Magnezone, troublesome Steel types are no longer a problem. Now Clefable can easily destroy stall teams while Dragonite checks offensive and balanced teams.

DD Charizard X was an obvious choice for my Mega slot since it's a Dragon type and has excellent offensive synergy with Dragonite. With two SR-weak Pokemon on this team, a Defogger or Rapid Spinner was obviously required. Latios felt like a good fit since it provides Defog, checks many deadly threats, and can weaken Dragon-counters for Dragonite and Charizard X. With Earthquake, Latios also acts as a great lure for Steel types that Magnezone struggles against, such as Heatran and Aegislash. Finally, I needed a Stealth Rock user. I also noticed that I was very weak to powerful physical attackers like Excadrill and Mega Pinsir, so Hippowdon felt like a good choice. It provides SR and checks many physical threats well. Sand Force was chosen as Hippowdon's ability so that Sandstorm doesn't interfere with Dragonite's Multiscale.

The first thing I thought of when I saw that this OUTC included Magnezone was Mega Pinsir. Some of Mega Pinsir's best defensive checks (Skarmory, Ferrothorn) are obliterated by Magnezone. So, I added Mega Pinsir, using the standard set because there's really not much else to use. For Magnezone, I decided to run the Choice Specs set, which I vastly prefer, running enough Speed creep to get past most slower variants of Mega Scizor because that thing is really annoying, especially if Keldeo is weakened. I figured I now needed a Dragon, and nothing really fit the role better than Kyurem-B. I wanted an attacker that could smash holes in the opposing team and help stallbreak, and Kyurem-B does exactly that. To me, the biggest advantage of running specially-biased Kyurem-B is breaking Ferrothorn with Ice Beam, but I wasn't really too concerned about that given Magnezone, and the physical set hits like a monster, especially the added power on Fusion Bolt for things like Aegi, and Iron Head to break Clef with ease. I run a Chople Berry because I need something to get around Thundurus and this seemed like a good option. Plus I can bluff Scarf with Dragon Claw which is cool.

From there, I realized my matchup against slower, stall/balanced/even bulky offense teams was getting to the point where it was really good. However, I was sorely missing a matchup against offense, and I needed Stealth Rock. Thus, for the last 3 slots, I added some Pokemon that do better against offense. Deoxys-S was a natural pick, outspeeding virtually the entire tier and threatening basically every offensive Pokemon, plus filling the role of a revenge killer AND giving me Stealth Rock. I then added Bisharp for a couple reasons; to have a secondary Steel instead of Magnezone, and to put pressure on the SR Deoxys-S sets. It also provides an all-important form of priority and helps me against opposing Deo-S, as well as pressuring Thundurus which is really sweet. Keldeo seemed like a good pick for the last slot after that, giving me an actual answer to offensive SD Mega Scizor, Mega TTar if Deo-S goes down, another thing for Mega Gyarados, and generally forcing offensive teams into a difficult position, especially in conjunction with the Pursuit support Bisharp provides. Icy Wind because I want to OHKO Garchomp, mainly, as that's an enormous pain to deal with, and basically my entire team takes a dump on Mega Venu so I felt Hidden Power Flying was really unnecessary.

My goal with this team was to build a DragMag team that doesn't falter in the offensive matchup, where in my experience these teams tend to have an issue. The one thing I wish I could fit in is a Defogger, maybe Latios over Deoxys-S, but the Speed, Stealth Rock, and revenge killing abilities are just too important in that slot, and Exca doesn't really fit anywhere. As it is, the thing that has the biggest issue with SR is Mega Pinsir, which it can deal with in its base form with only a 2x weakness.

teambuilding process
So when I built this team, I intended it to be a heavy offense team by allowing it to open up a sweep for pinsir or terrakion. I used terrakion over deo-s because it benefits from the mag more. Then I decided I needed a defogger, and latios fit the bill because when steel types are gone, it can use draco meteor without hesitation. later, I decided that landorus-t was my bulky ground type of choice because it can set stealth rocks, u-turn out to magnezone on a skarm switch, and check many prominent threats. its speed gets the jump on jolly azu and jolly maw, and its attack hits a benchmark. then I dumped the rest into HP and defense to allow it to check the threats its supposed to. Magnezone has speed EVs to get the jump on mega sciz running 4 speed, and to hit as hard as possible. then i picked kyurem as it can get rid of many walls, and makes this team further immune to stall.

I started this Magnezone team adding Dragonite, which is a very powerful physical sweeper in the OU metagame and abuses of the advantages that provides eliminating steel types. I gave it a Choice Band to have more inmediate power to sweep and used a Choice Scarf as Magnezone´s item to outspeed and kill some threatening pokémon before they can do damage (it already has a very high SAtk). To the core I added a LO Latias (that is also benefited by Magnezone), who provides a very useful defog support and a good answer to mons like Megazard Y and physically deffensive Pokémon. To that i added an Azumarill to face things like greninja and form a very solid Fairy-Steel-Dragon core, while hitting bulky ground types for lots of SE damage. This mon is also very known for its ability to dismantle offensive teams without problem. Hippowdon is here to wall physical threats and spread some annoying status in the foe. I used Sand Force over Sand Stream to keep Dnite´s multiscale intact when it has to switch some turns after hippo. Finally, Bulky Megados deals with mons like Aegislash easily and works as an amazing late game set up sweeper for the team.

I saw that Terra wanted DragMag, so I went with MagFag instead (mostly because DragMag doesn't make much sense when Aegislash and Fairies are running around). This led to my core of Magnezone + Mega Gardevoir, and expanded from there.

Magnezone is the trapper. I straight up stole the EV's from the first guy's team because I was too lazy to create my own, but anyways. The moveset's pretty standard, although I was half tempted to run Mirror Coat in place of Flash Cannon, just cuz Flash Cannon is usually deadweight anyway. That being said, Mirror Coat turned out to be just about as useless, so anyways, on to the next mon.

Mega Gardevoir was a natural second choice for MagFag, as it can hammer an opponent unfortunate enough to lose its Steel types. Most of the moveset was standard, but I chose Shadow Ball to hit Aegislash for a solid amount of damage. HP Ground was another option to hit Heatran, but I ended up covering Heatran fairly well with the next Fairy.

Landorus-T joined just because of its ability to check so much shit. Mega Pinsir, Mega Zard X, Dragonite...all beaten by the mustached tiger. And it gets rocks + U-turn on top of it, just because it can. EVs are my own, I forget what they do, but it's something :x. Moveset is standard.

I realized Azumarill could benefit quite a bit from Magnezone as well, as it can beat troublesome Ferrothorns and Skarmorys. As soon as Magnezone traps and kills one of those, Azumarill only has to set up to get a sweep off. Standard moveset and EVs for BD Azu.

Thundurus is almost a staple on my offense now, as it does a decent job checking Talonflame and Char Y, while stopping sweepers like Mega TTar, Mega Gyara, and MegaZard X with Twave. Moveset includes Focus Blast because I still have grit in my mouth from that goddamn Dice team popularizing sand offense.

Finally, I got to the end of the line and realized that I should probably have a Dragon to meet the requirements. Latios was the easy choice, as it can Defog away hazards and blast things for huge amounts of damage. Oh, it also conveniently wears down things that beat MGarde. I originally had Tbolt over HP Fighting, but the team was a bit DeoSharp weak, so I switched it up. Roost can be used over Defog if you're feeling ballsy, but Thundurus really likes not switching in to rocks to try and take on Talonflame.

Great team, Dread! I initially thought that there would be just Dragonite+Mag and Pinsir+Mag but this is just amazingly different and fun.
Maybe HP Fighting latias can be a bit obvious in a team like yours and maybe the Deosharp user´s goal to stack hazards will change to just Boost and sweep with Bisharp.
You could solve that using Hippowdon over Lando (they do almost the same things and the first has a very reliable recovery move) to abuse of its physical bulk and tank some more hits.
Also you could consider changing Thundurus to Rotom-W to be a bit less defog dependant, have a solid answer for flyingspam and a good mon to tank trans without being crippled by potential burns (Also has Volt Switch to grab some useful momentum).
Hope this has helped.
Again, great team :D

Ok, the deadline is here. The voting period can now begin and will end this Sunday, June 29th.
Voting now begins.

My vote goes to BurningFury101

My vote goes to Jukain

This team is fantastic, it has 2 fantastic cores which can be unusual at times but this team's DeoSharp and DragMag synergy is in one word, fantastic. These pokemon all have fantastic synergy with eachother and isnt hardwalled by ANYTHING. (Sweepercalc Proof) This team certainly has some defensive holes, but offensively its incredible. It has outstanding coverage and is incredibly well made. Only thing I don't necessarily agree with is the Chople Berry on Kyurem-B, but to be honest I can't think of anything much better than maybe another Life Orb, and even that is not too great. Overall fantastic team, vote is definitely deserved.
