OU Warstory: Good close match between two competent battlers

I was on Shoddy earlier today and had a really intense match. I usually don’t get excited while playing games but this one was pretty good so I had to share. My opponent feels like he played horribly though he didn’t and so shall be referred to as “opponent”.

Me (mr. sexy):

Opponent:

Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause Opponent sent out Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).

So, first turn of the match I usually protect, unless I see a Deoxys-E lead in which case I U-turn to Lucario to KO with extreme speed. The choice is much easier here as Gengar can’t set up Stealth Rock, and so Jirachi scouts a trick. Knowing that he’s locked into it, it’s a no-brainer to go to my own trick user.

That goes off without a hitch. However, while I know that you’re able to change moves after trick even if you receive a choice item, there are still two things bugging me. The first is: does it allow you to change if you receive the same item? The second is, does my opponent know that he can switch? I decide that both of these things going against me is unlikely and decide to nail the switch-in with my strongest STAB (I don’t want to trick yet since it would be too obvious)

Enter the Sand Man. My team actually doesn’t have a hard time handling Tyranitar as Lucario can come in on either of its STABS and Swampert pretty much is the definition of counter here, especially with wish support from Jirachi. I see leftovers so I’m pretty sure I have to worry about crunch here and not pursuit…

So far the game has been pretty simple, with both of us making “safe” conservative moves trying to feel each other out, so to speak. Here however is my first real choice, as in my mind at least, I’m telling my opponent what I want him to know about my play style. My two real options here are to Swords Dance and be met by Gengar, or Close Combat and be met by Gengar. Since I’m getting forced out either way, I want my opponent to assume that I always attack first, so that the next time Luke meets Tar, I can dance (assuming Gengar’s gone, and that I know the rest of his team, of course)

That unfortunately went the way I thought it would (it would have been great if he thought I was one of those people that stat up in front of things that can kill them though), but now I’m wary of both Trick and Hypnosis, and though I doubt he’s going to try to trick Luke, he might try hypnosis, and Jirachi is the best thing on my team right now to take it.

We’re kind of deadlocked here barring a crit of course, since my set is Wish/Protect/Toxic/U-turn, making Jirachi a real team player. I decide that he has to switch first though, since I can U-turn so I decide to Wish while trying to out stubborn the opponent.

Metagross is another threat that my team handles pretty efficiently. Swampert can take out pretty much anything that it can dish out, but he’s going to be busy handling Tar and since I’ve got a wish in the air, Charizard is the man for the job right now, especially since it’s immune to the earthquake that I’m expecting while resisting the Meteor Mash my opponent might use to hit the switch-in.

So I’m met with an Ice Punch instead of an Earthquake or Meteor Mash, that’s what wishes are for. At least it wasn’t Thunderpunch though that wouldn’t have done too much either considering you just double the Ice punch damage. The killer though is the freeze on the hit. I decide to stay in to see what else it can do or if it’s just going to go to something to stat-up on me.

Ouch. Well I’m in it to win it now. Rotom’s pretty beat up though Suicune has a reason to switch out considering that most rest these days and this is not the optimal use of a calm mind sweeper. Ergo, I’m torn between Thunderbolting and to go for a KO or Switching to Luke to force out the Tyranitar I’m expecting to come in. Maybe if I had Swords Danced the first turn I would have gone to Luke because then he would probably think that I would dance again and keep Tar in to Earthquake. Of Course if I had danced the first time I would have Close Combatted now. It doesn’t matter though, as I didn’t do that, and so I select Thunderbolt to hopefully hit Suicune, though I’m expecting Tyranitar or a ground type.

So now I weigh my options: Luke can switch in on Crunch, though I expect an Earthquake this time to hit Lucario. With that being said, Swampert takes both handily and so I decide to send my own bulky water into the fray.

Not before a final “fuck you” Thunderbolt though. Rotom’s sacrifice also allowed me to scout Tyranitar’s move since it’s choiced now, meaning Lucario gets a pretty clean switch in. However, I don’t have Stealth Rock up yet, which could be the deciding factor in whether or not Lucario gets the KO on Zapdos during the clean up. So, I decide to go to Swampert, though that would let in the same threat I’m trying to use Stealth Rock to tame. That’s a bit of a mind fuck.

Charizard was put on this team for its ability to wall Heatran handily, as well as Scizor and it can even take on Lucario if I can keep Stealth Rock down. Fire/Flying is actually a very good typing if you ignore the fact that Stealth Rock exists. I made it pretty bulky, giving it 252HP EVs, 64Atk, 68Def, 76Speed, and 48Sp. Atk. I gave it a Naïve nature which is bad for its special tanking but the only special hits it usually has to take are NVE ones.

We both exchange good games, though I feel for entirely different reasons. I hurriedly rush to the top of the log to see how many turn Suicune has resting… All of them! I think my opponent wished me a gg as Heatran can outurn and KO with Fire Blast while resisting extreme speed. But he gave me two turns… Dare to Dream!

Heatran is now at exactly 50% health, and I’m still not sure if Extreme Speed can KO, but I have no other choice obviously because of the scarf. So Let’s go all in!!!

Props: Both of us, for a good game with a fair amount of prediction, very few, if any screw ups, and no relevant hax

Slops: Myself, for roosting one too many times

Hope you guys enjoyed it.

Good Battle, nice Warstory.
Comments were lacking a bit towards the end, but it was still a pleasure to read.

Thank you. Yeah at the end the comments fell off a bit, but only because the game was pretty much writing itself at that point. There was nothing significant prediction-wise really where they started to dwindle a bit.

Good warstory indeed. Lucario's lategame prowess shines again.

edit: there are so many places where you didn't actually edit out opponent's name...

<3 Lucario. Solid battle. It didn't involve a lot of brilliant prediction or strategy, but it does showcase how thinking clearly and making good decisions can win the battle. Thanks for posting.

Sick battle dog, always cool to see a Lucario end-game clean up.

Though you could get rid of the SS damage and leftovers at the end of the turns (make sure you state who has the leftovers before the match though). This would make the "Less Log, More Commentary" thing happen.

:D Other wise I like very much

Thanks everyone for the comments. For some reason I'm having a really hard time making the sprites load. If anyone can help that would be great.

Yeah I have the sprites. That's not the problem. It's getting them on to the post. Maybe cause I'm on Firefox?
Idk but it won't drag over or copy and paste

I believe what you do is copy the URL for the image:
1) Go to the site.
2) Right click on the image.
3) "Copy Image Location" (or something like that)
4) In the message box for the post, click on the Insert Image button (next to the Hyperlink button) and paste the URL that you copied into that space
5) If you need copies of the same image (which you do) copy and paste that image you just inserted wherever you need it in your post.

I hope this helps! If I'm wrong, someone tell me, please.

There should be a little 'Insert Link' symbol in your text editor (looks something like a Globe with a pair of googles in front of it). If you put the sprite's url address into it you can post the sprite.

Or you could write the code for posting an image:

Smogon's text editor won't allow you to directly copy and paste images into your post.

Great game, and great team. I like your Charizard, but of course, I dearly hope that Starmie has Rapid Spin.

All in all, it was well worth the read in my opinion. : )

use this one.. dunno why, but somehow, there are still these
between your Pokémon.

@ Warstory : I liked it, nice comments + formatting.
