[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Scald
move 3: Fire Blast / Psyshock
move 4: Slack Off
item: Leftovers
ability: Regenerator
nature: Bold
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set attempts to use all of Slowking's strong traits. With the heavy EV investment in physical bulk, Slowking is able to keep many strong physical Fire- and Fighting-types, such as Entei, Emboar, and Hitmonlee, in check early on, while also being able to sweep late-game once it has obtained a Calm Mind boost. Speaking of Calm Mind, it is the key to this set's flexibility. Slowking can boost its Special Attack and Special Defense to hit much harder and to take special attacks that much better. Scald is Slowking's primary STAB move and allows Slowking to deter physical attackers from just coming in without risk. The 30% burn chance can be very handy when it comes to setting up later in the game. Fire Blast is a great move for Slowking as the move allows it to nail the likes of Escavalier, Ferroseed, and Tangrowth. If these threats are covered, Psyshock is a worthy alternative. With Psyshock, Slowking can break past Poliwrath and Qwilfish much more easily while also fairing well against Calm Mind Sigilyph, an ability that few other Pokemon in the tier can boast. Slack Off rounds off the set by giving Slowking reliable recovery so it can continue to pivot in and out early on in a game and to sweep late-game.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread gives Slowking as much physical bulk as possible while also aiming to outspeed minimum Speed Spiritomb. However, because Escavalier is a grave threat to Slowking and also aims for the same Speed benchmark, it may be worth your while to add a few extra Speed EVs to ensure Slowking can outpace all Escavalier and hit them with Fire Blast. Flamethrower is a more reliable Fire-type move that has perfect accuracy and much more PP than Fire Blast. However, the drop in power prevents Slowking from getting the OHKO on Escavalier without a boost. Ice Beam can be used if your team really struggles with Druddigon, but this leaves Slowking eternally walled by most bulky Water-types, which are Pokemon Slowking can easily use as setup fodder late-game. Slowking loves being able to get more than one Calm Mind boost late-game and Toxic Spikes support can allow it to stall out many threats as it does this. For this reason, Roselia can be a great partner as it can switch into many of the Grass- and Electric-type moves Slowking hates having to deal with and use these threats as Toxic Spikes bait. The two also make a solid defensive core that can check many threats and Slowking gives the core a win condition late-game. Slowking likes the presence of powerful wallbreakers to weaken the opposing team so it doesn't need more than one or two Calm Mind boosts to sweep. Moltres, Rotom-C, and special attacker Manectric are good for this role as they can force heavy damage onto most defensive cores with their powerful attacks. Escavalier is much slower than these wallbreakers, but it can easily switch in on most Grass-, Dark-, and Ghost-type Pokemon Slowking hates dealing with. Druddigon is another slower wallbreaker that can switch in on Grass-type moves, but it also fares much better against Electric-types. Absol, Escavalier, and Spiritomb are the biggest threats for this set. Emboar fares well against all three while Moltres and Aggron generally fare well against Escavalier and Spiritomb. Do note, though, that all three of these threats can be crippled by a burn should they try to switch-in and be met with a Scald.

move 2: Scald
move 3: Fire Blast / Psyshock
move 4: Slack Off
item: Leftovers
ability: Regenerator
nature: Bold
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

- Blends Slowking's offensive and defensive traits into one set
- Use it more defensively early to spread burns and check threats such as Emboar, Entei, and Hitmonlee. Then setup CM once your counters are weakened, gone, and/or burned
- CM boosts Special Attack and Special Defense, making Slowking both hit harder and harder to deal damage to
- Scald is for reliable STAB; deters physical attackers from setting up alongside Slowking
- Fire Blast murders Escavalier and more defensive Grass-types that can't OHKO Slowking
- Psyshock lets Slowking reliably beat other CM users and punishes Poliwrath and Qwilfish for trying to phaze or set up on it respectively
- Slack Off gives reliable recovery to let Slowking continue a sweep

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

- EV spread allows Slowking to outpace Spiritomb and give as much physical bulk as possible
- Leftovers for that added recovery
- Special Attack EVs for more power, but bulk is really important and NP is better for more power anyway
- Ice Beam to beat Druddigon
- Flamethrower is more reliable than Fire Blast and has more PP. Can't OHKO Escavalier without a boost though
- Toxic Spikes support to let Slowking stall out defensive threats it may otherwise struggle against
- Roselia can easily use Electric- and Grass-types as (Toxic) Spikes bait
- Wallbreakers to weaken the opposing team and lower the amount of CM boosts Slowking needs to sweep
- Moltres, Specs Rotom-C, and Special Attacker Manectric can all weaken defensive cores for Slowking
- Absol hates burns and is frail, but it outspeeds so it sucks. Use Emboar to beat it down reliably
- Spiritomb hates burns, but Sucker Punch sucks. Emboar and Moltres can beat it easily. Aggron too if it avoids Will-O-Wisp

You only need 44 speed EVs to outpace 0 spe Spiritomb, the other EVs were speed creeping...

Also Fire Blast is not the way to go here, it doesnt have enough PP for this particular set. I THINK it was either Flamethrower, Psyshock, or Signal Beam but I don't remember tbh. If someone could confirm which one or two it was that would be great, I have never used CM before :/

Scald is meant for the long haul anyway, Fire Blast is there to prevent Escavalier from doing anything in a one-stop shop manner without needing to set up, and it bluffs the standard defensive set. You could probably argue that Flamethrower makes a better primary slash since it does still OHKO Escavalier at +1, but idk.

Regardless, you need the Fire move. Psyshock is cool to nail Clefable, Poliwrath, and at least do some damage to other Slowking I suppose, but in most cases you're better off just fishing for a burn with Scald or hitting them with Flamethrower/Fire Blast (the major exception being Qwilfish I suppose). It's the same reasons why you always need the Fire move on the Specs or TR set.

Psyshock definitely needs to be slashed at least. The ability to boost along other CMers (many of which CM Slowking checks rather well) and beat them outright generally makes it a good choice. It also lets Slowking one of the few things that can go toe-to-toe with nearly every Sigilyph variant (if it's Whirlwind then you lose though). It would also mean that you can't be phazed as easily by Poliwrath as well.

Ok, slashed Psyshock with Fire Blast and made AC mention of Flamethrower for a more reliable Fire move with more PP, but noted its primary con. Also fixed the Speed EVs so it won't Speed creep stuff (not sure how I didn't catch that)

Hmm, I think speed creeping should still be mentioned because iirc Escavalier now aims for min Speed Tomb as well. This looks good otherwise.

I'd personally mention Escavalier as a teammate since it can handle opposing Grass- and Dark-types (watch out for HP Fire Grasses and Fire Blast Absol though), and with its great power also serves as a neat wallbreaker to weaken the team for Slowking to pull off a sweep. Druddigon is also in a similar boat though it handles Rotom-C and Manectric better than Esca. Other than that, this is good, this set is super legit.
