Let me put it this way.
Imagine you are going for a real life Pokemon tournament.
Imagine that the prizes are trophies, and free air tickets to the Worlds Tournament.
Imagine you're preparing very much for it, since you can't exactly change your team once it starts.
Would you want to give away your team's secrets?
Even in singles OU, people write sets they've used to great effect after they've reached some mark on theladder they're aiming for, or after they've found a lot of people know about it.
People don't throw their trade secrets to the wind. This is especially true in VGC, since there is no true "second chance"(on the ladder you can make up for it, and tournaments keep coming regularly), either you get through a battle, or you lose, and getting to another VGC is not exactly the easiest task, unless its very close to your hometown.
VGC players discuss on IRC, because VGC has not really had recognition from Smogon as an official metagame, and Smogon apparently does not have the "manpower" to run its own doubles metagames. Therefore, unelss Philip changes his mind, our official doubels metagame will be the VGC. Doubles has not at all got recognition, because PL came close to the beginning of Gen 5, and most doubles players had "migrated" to PO.
Unless you can convince Philip somehow to give Smogon a different doubles metagame, VGC should remain in at least one official tournament, and needs these 2 slots to show that it is a current official metagame.
@Erebyssial: I honestly doubt if not a single non-VGCer supported this decision was made. COnsidering the TDs were involved, and I don't think ANY of them are VGCers(correct me if I'm wrong), it shows that it isn';t just the VGCers apparently "very happy that THEIR 5% metagame is being recognized". Smogon is a competive Pokemon community, not a competitive singles Pokemon community.
