Introduction:
So, while looking around in the other metas forums, I noticed one thing about all OMs: They have a very short life span. Some are exceptions like STABmons who had like, an 8 month popularity super span. However, for most like tier shift, Slowmons, Suicide Cup, etc. They die very quickly unless someone discovers a new metagame changing set, a new gen or move tutor++ DLC "XY2" kind of game comes out or there is a new event. So basically, unless something new gets added to the mix, we feel a certain, well, staleness, and this is especially true with OMs because we come from OU, UU etc where we know how to play it well, we know the top mons, we know how to peak the ladder, etc. but it's too repetitive for us, so when we get the same feeling from OMs, we just try to switch to the next one in order to avoid the staleness, it's like akwardly running out of things to talk about. BH avoids this because nobody can or will explore every single GOOD combo before somebody finds a new counter to the top pokemon making that counter the top pokemon, then making the meta about beating the top pokemon and the cycle repeats, BH is an endless cycle of freshness and miraculously avoids staleness due to that. So what if another metagame could very well avoid that staleness but not by infinite loops of creativity(well kind of) but by not being a constant, stale, metagame where nothing is changed, so I introduce you -

[INTRODUCTION] Test Subject (1): Welcome to the Lab

Welcome to test subject! Test Subject is an other metagames sub forum experiment as one might say. Basically, what test subject is is a tier where a community of us OM players decided to be the "professors" aka the council take 1-3 mechanic, pokemon, item, move, ability(s), really anything from one gen and put it in another gen. For example: Gen 2 Rest-Sleep Talk mechanics in Gen 6! Or Mega Gengar in ADV, or even A trio or duo of things like Goodra and Heliolisk in gen 5 with a weather themed test subject!

Current professors
So what are the guidelines you ask?
  • We cannot currently move a mechanic from a later gen to gen 1 or 2 due to EV mechanics on Pokemon Showdown
  • We will vote on 1-3 Test Subjects per week
  • Nomination period lasts 2 days, Voting Lasts 1-2 Days and Play Testing and Discussion Lasts anywhere from 3 to 4 days
  • I'll start the opening of nominations for the council every Saturday and voting will start mondays, if I don't start it by 7:00 PM Pacific Time GMT -8 I'll leave it to Pikachuun to start the voting for me
That's about it, the system is in the works so far so a suggestion for things like 1 week to weeks is fine

Every test subject will have a new "opening" post like this as well with a title and list of our findings On the saturday of voting, we can also talk on if it's
  • Too Good - Broken
  • Great - Top meta threat
  • Good
  • Balanced - Like B rank viability rankings
  • Not Good
  • A Failure / Bad
But that's optional.

Anyways our current test subject is:
Test Subject (3): 3Spooky5You

Hello people it's been long past the appropriate amount of time, and in order to progress this, I have decided on the next test subject:

Aegislash in BW OU(has stance change too)

  • Good conversation piece:
    • How well does Aegislash fair in the metagame of BW OU?
    • In what archetypes is it most effective on?
    • Is it effective at all? YES LOL ITS AEGIS
    • What common threats does it effectively block?
    • How does the gen 5 typechart help it or hurt it?
    • Will it make weatherless more effective or sun more anti meta?
    • How does it fair in the viability ranks?
    • Does it make the metagame unhealthy?
Have fun
If everybody who wants to nominate/vote does nominate/vote already or I decide to end it early, then we can start the next round of test subject faster than usual!

Playability: none for now, but will be in a while

  • Archived Subjects so far
    • Mega Gengar in ADV
      • Mega gengar would probably be the best pokemon by farin ADV
        It would have Aerodactyl speed + the highest sp atk in the game even with a Timid nature.

        Some things that could work with it:
        a) Explosion + special sweepers => trap and kill special walls
        b) Hypno/Sub + Focus Punch + T-Bolt + Ice Punch => sleep something and kill it.
        c) Bulky WoW => Guranteed burn vs some sweeper
        d) Offensive: T-bolt, Ice Punch, GDrain, Fire Punch/Hypnosis

        The list of things this thing could trap and kill is huge.
        T-tar => sleep and fpunch
        Celebi => cant kill with psychic and its 2hkoed by ice punch or fire punch
        Suicune => is 2hkoes by t-bolt. crocune might have a chance to win
        Gengar => slower and weaker, it's slept and 2hkoed
        Salamence => OHKOed by IPunch, and MGengar could easily be EVd to survive a +1 HP Flying which is Mence strongest attack. Just don't swith in an EQ.
        Skarmory => Yeah
        Zapdos => MGengar wins 1vs1
        Heracross => Especially if MGengar has FPunch.
        Swampert => If MGengar has GDrain.
        Blissey => It could sleep + fpunch, or use Sub (IB wont break it) and then Focus Punch, or just explode
        Flygon => If MGengar manages to switch into something different than EQ, its dead
        Starmie => Slower, and it's OHKOed by t-bolt
        Milotic => 2hkoed by t-bolt unless it has some Sp def evs
        Forretress => especially with fire punch
        Gyarados => Slower even after a DD, unless jolly gyara, which is too weak
        etc, etc

        It can have many roles, like removing Swampert for heavy hitters (t-tar, ddmence, metagross...), removing spinners like Starmie or Forretress, and it can also be a better Magnezone that can trap and kill every Spiker, etc

        Crunch + Pursuit tar with lum berry is probably the best way of beatlng it, but it can lose if Gengar has Focus Punch, or it could be bulky and just switch out to a Dugtrio, while easily surviving the pursuit.
        Wish + MGengar + Dugtrio is probably a good core, with Dugtrio removing a lot of things that can give Gengar problems.

        To sum it up, MGengar in ADV is a mon that can easily trap and kill more than half of the metagame to support the team and that can also easily sweep. It's like a faster, stronger and bulkier Dugtrio with a better typing, great resistances and inmunities and with an extremely better movepool.
        It would probably even dominate ubers
        What about something like this?

        Gengar @ Gengarite
        Ability: Levitate
        EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpAtk / 252 Spe
        Nature: Timid
        - Thunderbolt
        - Psychic
        - Fire Punch
        - Protect

        On Turn 1, you set up a Protect and Mega Evolve. The opponent may try to kill Gengar before it Mega Evolves, and this stops them from doing so. Alternatively, if the opponent switches to something else, this gives Gengar the opportunity to switch as well, on Turn 2. Otherwise, the opponent is now trapped by Shadow Tag. At that point, the only things that will outspeed Gengar are Ninjask and Electrode, with it speed-tying Jolteon, Crobat, and Aerodactyl (the latter two of which have access to Pursuit, but with such low Special Attack, it shouldn't matter, even Crobat, with higher Special Attack, typically doesn't carry any SpAtk investment, so it will only do 36.2 - 42.7% to Mega Gengar). From there, Gengar becomes a special sweeper with Thunderbolt and Psychic being its two most powerful special-based moves. This combo is resisted only by Magneton, Exeggutor, and Celebi, so Fire Punch was an obvious choice for the final move. Psychic is also good for taking out opposing Mega Gengars, because bear in mind that in ADV, Shadow Tag doesn't let you switch out, even if you also have Shadow Tag. In Ubers, however, Gengar's greatest enemy is Deoxys, who outspeeds it in all forms (save Deoxys-D) and can hit it with a strong Shadow Ball or Pursuit. Of course, in Ubers, Gengar can just carry around Perish Song+Protect+Substitute.

        Edit: I just made a team, so I'll be on the server if anyone wants to play.
        sorry for double

        Damn, a good post, shouldn't have expected any less from such a competitive Old gens player such as yourself, MDragon :]. ANyways, remember, it has to spend a turn Mega Evolving which is the main problem, the speed doesn't take effect and the trapping doesn't really take effect until next turn. This means CB Aero can EQ it before it Tbolt kills you. Also, this means regular Gar can switch into EQ due to levitate, and THEN M-evo to handle the threats.

        So I've come up with this set so far:
        @

        Ability: Levitate => Shadow Tag
        EVs: 224 HP / 32 SpA / 252 Spe
        Timid Nature
        Substitute / Protect / Taunt | Disable | Will-O-Wisp | Thunderbolt or Ice Punch

        So yeah, stallbreaker and sweeper handler. TormentProtect or Disable + WoW beats both DDTar and DDMence since you burn and disable their EQs. 224 HP EVs survive a +2 rock slide or +2 HP Flying from mence and ttar respectively with over 30% health remaining. More details later, but I think you get the jist.

Quick question- are new moves/abilities implemented in the old gens if the Pokémon are? For example, will Gooey still be an ability for Goodra (I know the point was to test Hydration; this is just a question)? A better example would be Bibarel in Gen 3- all of its Abilities are from Gen 4 or later.

Mega gengar would probably be the best pokemon by farin ADV
It would have Aerodactyl speed + the highest sp atk in the game even with a Timid nature.

Some things that could work with it:
a) Explosion + special sweepers => trap and kill special walls
b) Hypno/Sub + Focus Punch + T-Bolt + Ice Punch => sleep something and kill it.
c) Bulky WoW => Guranteed burn vs some sweeper
d) Offensive: T-bolt, Ice Punch, GDrain, Fire Punch/Hypnosis

The list of things this thing could trap and kill is huge.
T-tar => sleep and fpunch
Skarmory => Yeah
Zapdos => MGengar wins 1vs1

Damn, a good post, shouldn't have expected any less from such a competitive Old gens player such as yourself, MDragon :]. ANyways, remember, it has to spend a turn Mega Evolving which is the main problem, the speed doesn't take effect and the trapping doesn't really take effect until next turn. This means CB Aero can EQ it before it Tbolt kills you. Also, this means regular Gar can switch into EQ due to levitate, and THEN M-evo to handle the threats.

So I've come up with this set so far:
@

Ability: Levitate => Shadow Tag

Test Subject (2): The grass is greener on the other side

Hello people it's been the appropriate amount of time, and in order to progress this, I have decided on the next test subject:

Mega Venusaur in DPP OU(has to use mega stone too)

  • Good conversation piece:
    • How well does Mega Saur fair in the balanced metagame of DPP OU?
    • In what archetypes is it most effective?
    • Is it effective at all?
    • What common threats does it effectively block? such as offensive cm suicune and mix infernape
    • How does it fair in the viability ranks?
    • Does it make the metagame unhealthy?
    • I'm tagging BKC LizardMan and Jirachee and other people soon enough cause they are good and active dpp players, so I was wondering what they would think?
Anyways, I'll be submitting a pull request on joims lab pretty soon for this as my own server will be down for a long while I'll also be sure to update the OP. Have fun

Although I have literally no dpp experience I can tell you that eq is pretty much mandatory as megasaur is one of the few grass types that can beat heat ran via thickfat. Also what was the verdict on megagar in adv

I haven't played this yet so this is gonna be all theorymoning but since I have experience with both dpp and xy ous it should be ok

mega venu is going to shut down half of the currently popular threats in the meta. gyarados and starmie are forced into running arguably shitty options in bounce / psychic when they could run better moves. offensive zapdos needs to run hp fly if it doesn't want to get walled which leaves it open to things like flygon (kinda). suicune can't really run offensive sets anymore because they're hard walled. shaymin becomes pretty much unviable and celebi isn't worth using unless you want to use a np set I guess. it also makes lucario a worse pokemon because it's main strength is that it can beat pretty much everything in the tier with the right setting but it can't really do that to venusaur... basically, water / electric / fighting types really lose a lot of viability because they originally didn't have a real full stop, but a pokemon as strong as venusaur that blocks them will be really bad on them.

these are mostly offensive threats, but venusaur doesn't only affect that. it also gives stall teams a very reliable toxic spikes absorber which has always been a problem for them, considering the only viable grounded poison types are roserade / tentacruel / regular venusaur which really aren't staples on stall. I'd say it kills tspikes leads outright because there's no point in using them if your opponent can switch in something that removes them instantly at any time, especially considering how easy it is for mvenu to come in. mvenu would increase the viability of stall teams so much you probably would see at least one side using stall every battle.

a big thing about mvenu in xy is that if you use it, you have to give up your mega slot. mvenu is an excellent pokemon but many teams can't afford to use it over a mega mawile / charizard / whatever, especially if they're offensive teams. if you take this to dpp, since there are no other megas, there's no drawback to putting mvenu on your team, meaning that it would probably be used on every team, especially considering its incredible strengths and lack of any really upsetting flaws. seriously, its only weaknesses are to psychic and flying, the first being a really meh type in dpp because of tyranitar's absolute dominance over the tier, and the second being incredibly rare (as an attacking type). I guess synthesis being bad sucks but venusaur has leech seed and rest is usable.

I think dpp mvenu would be very broken

not to mention that the nerf that powder moves got is no longer present which mega mega venusaur absolutely adores.

This team aims to abuse and defeat mega venusaur. Taunt Azelf is one of the best ways of dealing with Mega Saur stall teams as it can 2hko it and it's really only mainly afraid of sludge bomb as it's light weight protects it from grass knot. This team uses Mega Venusaur in an offensive manner. Sacrificing recovery, defensive investment and grass knot in order to (since I'm using sand I might as well not use synthesis and recovery in leech seed on an offensive set doesn't work that well) handle many threats while still maintaining large enough offensive presence to sleep and KO a lot of threats or walls that give the sweepers on this team trouble. The EVs on mvenu are to make sure +1 LO gyara can't guerentee the 2hko on me with EQ w/o rocks and the rest are dumped into spA and modest. The tyranitar EVs were made by me in order to 2hko sdef skarm and possibly ohko it after mvenu hp fire damage while purusit trapping threats to the mvenu build such as the aforementioned azelf. Despite the huge centering on MVenu, this team actually focuses on bulky ddnite. Bulky DDnite is an underrated threat in DPP right now and it doesn't deserve to be. With the skarm sleep/removal support of mvenu, and wall breaking powers of SD luke and blast tar, it often can be a guaranteed win condition as it loses most of it's troubles as the walls go down and it can set up. Luke can also be a secondary win condition but mainly it's to weaken down defensive teams so that dragonite can properly set up and win. Forre is my last mon I put into the team, however it's a great asset to the team. It can guerentee a spin vs defensive and offensive teams with the help of the other teammates. Also, hazard stacking teams are hella annoying to this team and how it works so hazard removal is a must. The set is pretty standard but toxic protect can wear down a lot of switchins like phys def hippo that even luke can't pummel if venus down.

Have fun

+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Aegislash in Rain: 234-276 (72.2 - 85.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Basically Aegislash doesn't like Weather one bit. Except sandstorm/hail (when vs.ing it of course).

Now:
  • Its pretty much the strongest spin blocker with actual bulk ever
  • Its not even weak to pursuit/shadow ball
  • Crushes non-hp fire Lati@s (and your soul)
  • Can sort of check Ttar
  • Doesn't have to worry about drill and stuff
  • Ignores knock off and bisharp
  • Is a problem for drag-mag
  • Hurts jellicent + ferrothorn
Does it get Kings Shield though because gen 5 didnt have that

I think it's safe to say Aegislash would be an absolute beast in BW. Its defensive typing is even better back then than it is now, and it spinblocks every relevant spinner besides Donphan. However, while it would be completely ridiculous defensively, I don't think it would be quite as offensively threatening as it is now, for one simple reason : Steel resists Ghost. Suddenly, a bunch of Pokemon can switch into Shadow Balls easily, though not many of them can retaliate. I don't really see any of Aegi's common sets being that good, or at least, not those that rely on spamming the nigh-unresisted Shadow Ball and only using its other offensive moves for certain specific threats (which is basically a good description of the Tank, SubToxic, and Offensive Life Orb set).

The only set I can see really working well is the KS 3 Attacks set, but it will probably run some Attack investment to 2HKO key steels, such as 252 HP Magnezone (need 64 Attack), and Heatran (basically needs full Attack investement for that one). It may even run Shadow Claw over Shadow Ball, just because of how much attack investment it needs to hit Steels with Sacred Sword and it might as well use that investment for its main STAB. And even then, it's still beaten by Skarmory, Jirachi, Scizor, Forretress, etc... The SubToxic set is flat-out walled by every Steel-type, so I don't see it being effective, while the offensive LO one basically relies on spamming Shadow Ball so probably won't work either. Fortunately for it, a lot of Steel-types can't really touch Aegislash either, so it may not be a problem, but a lot of them can stall it out. Oh, I forgot to mention : it's now trapped by Magnezone and Dugtrio, so there's that.

Honestly, I think a MagneSlash core being effective is a very real possibility for these reasons. Unfortunately, Magnezone has to make a tough choice concerning what Hidden Power he wants to go for, but it can potentially work. (Alternately, DugSlash can also work, but is walled by Skarmory)

anyways eevee gen and I were just talking about this on PS(!) even though I thought of it before I told him, he's still awesome to ask for nitpicking, so thanks to The Eevee General :

Aegislash @ Leftovers / Shed Shell / Spooky Plate / Life Orb (LO can 2hko + 2 CM latias I think with shadow ball but it can roost/cm/sub due to needing to use KS)
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Atk
Quiet Nature
- King's Shield
- Shadow Ball
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Pursuit / Sacred Sword

It needs HP fire imo or else it's complete set up bait for things like spikes skarm or SD Scizor. Anyways Shadow Ball is standard. Pursuit damages latios and sacred sword chips at heatran for other sweepers to set up and win (like MOTH for example). It also can use this as a lure to pop SD Zor thinking they can set up on poor old nerfedslash. Shed Shell is for trappers, lefties is primary because lefties on aegis 2014 is real and spooky/LO for needed power vs cm latias
