Back in Gen IV, TR was a decent option to consider. If pulled effectively, it could catch someone off guard. Moreover, given that many Uber pokes have high stats on both ends, the ability to save EVs on Spe open possibilities to go mix.
The question is, is it still viable in Gen V? We now have Ferrothorn who may outspeed your typical base 90 pokes. He also has Protect to stall some turns out. On top of that, priority is everywhere especially from that monster Arceus Normal that seems to be on everyone's team nowadays. Ironically, Arceus can learn TR.
Besides Trickroom, I remember Hugendugen using TR teams as well (he can correct me on this one) back in the day. Feel free to comment and post sets if you feel like to.
Here is a list of commonly seen pokes in Ubers that can use the move (bold those who seem like the better options):
- Dialga, Palkia, Deoxys formes (lol), Mewtwo, Arceus formes, Jirachi, Celebi, Espeon, Xatu.
Basically, a TR poke should be bulky enough to survive a hit and use TR. Both Jirachi and Celebi have ok bulk and access to U-Turn and some form of self-healing. Dialga not only is one tough mofo, it can very well act as a wallbreaker under TR with the right moves.
Honorable mention to pokes from lesser tiers that *could* also work as TR set uppers:
- Gallade: high SpDef, access to Taunt, Hypnosis and Memento. Has decent Atk stat and offensive movepool as well.
- Banette: Suicide lead is ok, is just that it has lost the surprise factor. It has access to Taunt, Magic Coat (preventing Taunt from faster leads) and status moves like T-Wave or WoW. Attack stat not so terrible either.
- Mew: Kinda fast but has a massive movepool. Has some bulk and could potentially set up TR more than once. Or could just explode (Azelf would do that better though).
