Landorus @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Rock Polish
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Landorus is a pretty nice check to Toxicroak, leaning towards counter. It switches into all of Toxicroak's move successfully, bar Ice Punch, because of its typing. It lives a +2 Sucker Punch with 30%+ to spare and OHKOes back with Earth Power.

Calcs:

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Landorus: 213-252 (66.7 - 78.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Toxicroak: 710-837 (231.2 - 272.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Name : Rhyperior
Status: Check

Rhyperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 212 HP / 44 Atk / 252 Def
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Ice Punch

Thanks to Solid Rock, Rhyperior isn't 2HKOed by any of Toxicroak's moves even with Stealth Rock up. In return, it can OHKO Toxicroak with STAB Earthquake. Other moves are standard.

252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Drain Punch vs. 212 HP / 252 Def Solid Rock Rhyperior: 136-164 (32 - 38.6%) -- 48.1% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
44+ Atk Rhyperior Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Toxicroak: 462-546 (150.4 - 177.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Doublade as a Hard Check / Soft Counter (wow. much originality. very difference. such same)

Doublade @ Eviolite
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Gyro Ball
- Toxic
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Here's an interesting check, to say the least. Doublade is immune to both of Toxicroak's STABs and resists Ice Punch, but is weak to Sucker Punch. Nevertheless, there's a way to KO Toxicroak without being hit by Sucker Punch: RestTalk. The strategy behind this would be to come into an Ice Punch and/or any kind of entry hazard to not be at full health (I know this sounds crazy, but bear with me on this one) before using Rest to avoid Sucker Punch and gaining all its health back. After that, all you have to do is to click Sleep Talk, which will also make you avoid Sucker Punch, and hope it goes for Gyro Ball for the 2HKO on Toxicroak. Other than that, Doublade is only 4HKOed by Ice Punch at +6. With this strategy, you can avoid and stall out Toxicroak's Sucker Punch all day long while 2KOing it with Gyro Ball via Sleep Talk.
252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Doublade: 22-26 (6.8 - 8%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Sucker Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Doublade: 94-112 (29.1 - 34.7%) -- 6% chance to 3HKO (if you switch into one its STABs or Sucker Punch, it Sucker Punches you as you Gyro Ball it to lose some health for Resting the next turn)
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Sucker Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Doublade: 185-218 (57.4 - 67.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (if you switch into SD, it Sucker Punches you as you Gyro Ball it to lose some health for Resting the next turn)
+6 252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Doublade: 86-101 (26.7 - 31.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

4 Atk Doublade Gyro Ball (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Toxicroak: 183-216 (59.6 - 70.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Mega Diancie as a Check

Diancie @ Diancite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 16 Atk / 240 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Moonblast
- Diamond Storm
- Earth Power
- Protect / Hidden Power Fire

M-Diancie can switch into anything from Toxicroak bar Gunk Shot, survive the following Sucker Punch (even if it came on a SD) and OHKO back with Earth Power.
252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Diancie: 45-53 (18.6 - 21.9%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Ice Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Diancie: 86-101 (35.6 - 41.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Scarf TTar as a check.

Tyranitar (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Crunch
- Pursuit/Superpower/Ice Punch

Not much to explain here. Scarf Tyranitar will be able to come in on any attack that Toxicroak throws barring Drain Punch. Living a +2 sucker punch and being able to KO back with EQ make it a pretty reliable check. :)

Calculations:
  • +2 252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Tyranitar: 90-107 (26.3 - 31.3%) -- 30.8% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Mega Sableye is a hard check / counter

Sableye @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Foul Play

Standard utility set, nothing super crazy here to deal with Alakazam. With its typing, Mega Sableye is immune to Mega Alakazam's STAB moves and Focus Blast, only fearing Shadow Ball (which is takes fairly little from) and the occasional Dazzling Gleam. In addition, it bounces back Encore! However, it has a small chance to be 2HKOed with Shadow Ball after rocks with this spread, and while it could run more to avoid that it is still forced to recover (to some degree) upon switching into repeated Shadow Balls.
252 SpA Mega Alakazam Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 144+ SpD Sableye: 116-137 (38.1 - 45%) -- 8.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Jirachi as a Soft Counter

Jirachi @ Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 224 SpD / 32 Spe
Careful Nature
- Iron Head
- Thunder Wave
- Wish
- Protect

Jirachi never gets 2hko'd by Shadow Ball even with rocks up. However, because of Encore, Jirachi can be annoyed by being locked into Wish or Protect. Thunder Wave lets Jirachi outspeed Alakazam so it can hit it with Iron Head before it can Encore Jirachi. Jirachi is not a full counter because Alakazam can encore it into Wish and still beat it with Shadow Ball's SpD drops (20% chance, which can be even higher when it traces Jirachi's Serene Grace)

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 224+ SpD Jirachi: 160-190 (39.6 - 47%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Mega Absol: Check

Soul Hospital (Absol) @ Absolite
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 32 SpA / 224 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Knock Off
- Fire Blast / Ice Beam
- Superpower

Mega Absol is a solid check to Alakazam, being able to switch into three of Alakazam's attacks with ease, being immune to Psyshic and resisting Shadow Ball (Yes, Absol can actually switch into something.). Even if Absol isn't Mega Evolved, it can simply click Super Punch on the Mega Evolution and easily KO Alakazam, and thanks to Magic Bounce reflecting Encore. It doesn't come close to matching Alakazam's blistering Speed, but luckily Alakazam lacks priority and Absol has that in its arsenal. Heck, even Pursuit is a viable option on Absol that it can use if it tries to switch out, easily OHKOing. However, Absol is completely obliterated by Focus Blast, so the wrong prediction could end up costing you gravely, making it only a check.

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Psychic vs. Mega Absol: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time (Funny enough, Absol actually has a horn)

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Absol: 82-97 (30.2 - 35.7%) -- 40.7% chance to 3HKO

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Absol: 496-584 (183 - 215.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO <-------

Mandibuzz cause these reservations are way too mainstream.

Pokemon: Mandibuzz
Status: Hard Check / Soft Counter

Mandibuzz @ Leftovers
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 136 Def / 108 SpD / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Foul Play
- Roost
- Taunt
- Defog

Mandibuzz is a pretty solid Hard Check to Mega Alakazam, as it can switch in on Focus Blast, take about 42.5% max, and then hit it with Foul Play, for a 2HKO, then Roost off all damage lost. You can also play mind games with it by predicting the Encore and get off a free Roost.

Relevant Calc's:

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 108 SpD Mandibuzz: 153-180 (36.1 - 42.5%) -- 94.8% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 240 HP / 252 SpA / 16 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Psyshock
- Hidden Power Fire / Shadow Ball
- Baton Pass
Thanks to Sylveon's natural bulk, it can come in and tank 2 Psychics from Timid Zam and OHKO with Hyper Voice:

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Psychic vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Sylveon: 147-174 (37.5 - 44.5%) -- 2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Choice Specs Pixilate Sylveon Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Alakazam: 292-345 (116.3 - 137.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

If they manage to get that 2HKO when you're at full HP you should probably check your deposit at the Karma bank. Anyway, while it can tank 2 Psychics, it requires full health to do so comfortably and has no form of recovery, thus it's listed as a check.

Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 Def / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

Fat Blob is fat, walls basically everything Zam can throw at it and can either beat it down with Seismic Toss or severely cripple it with Thunder Wave. Encore can really mess with Chansey, though, and Mega Zam's Focus Blast has a small chance to 3HKO after Rocks. If you switch into any other move, though, Chansey is safe.

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 168-198 (26.2 - 30.8%) -- 23.6% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Azumarill (M) @ Assault Vest

EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 SpD

Description: Nothing much to say here. Assault Vest Azumaril is able to switch onto Mega Alakazam's STAB Psychic and live with more than 50% health. It will be able to KO back with a reliable Knock Off+Aqua Jet or Play Rough. Nominated as a check becuase of limited switch ins.

Calculations:

Megagross takes 79% max from Shadow Ball and Meteor Mash just flat out obliterates Megazam thanks to its poor physical bulk.

Just a sample set, obviously. Be careful if running Naive, though, because Shadow Ball tops out at 87.7%. If pure physical Megagross, Jolly takes the same as Hasty from it.

Checks Mega Zam quite nicely as it can come in on anything besides psychic and OHKO with brave bird, or predict the switch to save mega zam and grab the opportunity to u-turn out for momentum gain. Kinda shaky tbh cuz it can't come in with rocks on the field although it can check if rocks are off.

I'm actually kind of surprised no one mentioned this so I feel like I should have a say. I'm seeing some checks that don't like taking shadow balls and can't really trap it barring CB Scizor and also having to risk a crit that can possibly OHKO them. Don't see a lot of safe checks on the list barring Sylveon, Chansey, and Mega Salbeye. CB Scizor and Absol requires you to to get a coinflip right which I feel it's kind of unreasonable instead of having something safe and reliable. I was just gonna suggest something standard in the lines of Bulky Mega Scizor:

Scizor-Mega @ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 248 HP / 84 Atk / 12 Def / 164 SpD
Careful Nature
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- Bug Bite / Knock Off / Superpower
- Roost

Something simple, nothing too fancy. The Bulky Spread is nice to prevent a 2hko from Mega Alakazams Focus Blast after Stealth Rocks are up which is nice after mega evolving. The rest of the spread is as standard as it can be as both a Zam check and also a win condition. It is also something that doesn't mind being Encored with it's STAB attacks and recovery. This was just my 2 cents in terms of reliable checks.

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 164+ SpD Mega Scizor: 127-150 (37 - 43.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Actually uh... Taking Tornadus-T instead lol.

Tornadus-Therian @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 96 HP / 160 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hurricane
- Superpower
- Knock Off
- U-turn

Tornadus-T is a decent check to Mega Alakazam when equipped with an Assault Vest, as Mega Alakazam fails to 3HKO with Psychic, while in turn Tornadus-T 2HKOes with Hurricane or Knock Off. If Stealth Rock is up, Mega Alakazam can 2HKO, but Tornadus-T can pivot out with U-turn to come in at a later time to finish Mega Alakazam off.

Calcs:

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Psychic vs. 96 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Tornadus-T: 135-159 (41.7 - 49.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock

SDef Hippo can take on Mega Zam rather well, and is a great example of the merits that SDef Hippo has over physical or mixed Hippo. The increased special bulk and lack of resists allows Hippo to check Zam quite soundly. Zam even has the advantage of also beating Psyshock Zam, which beats most specially based checks like Torn-T.

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Hippowdon: 163-193 (38.8 - 45.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

EVs: 248 HP / 164 SpA / 96 SpD

Slowking can safely come in on any of Mega Alakazam's moves except Shadow Ball and 2HKO it back with Scald. It is also not worn down easily due to Regenerator. Fire Blast allows Slowking to hit Ferrothorn and Scizor hard while Psychic is a nice secondary STAB. Power Gem is used here to OHKO Mega Charizard-Y and Talonflame. However, Ice Beam can be used to hit Dragons harder.

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 96 SpD Assault Vest Slowking: 124-146 (31.5 - 37.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Bisharp as a Check

Bisharp @ Life Orb
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Pursuit
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
- Knock Off

Easily comes in on Shadow Ball, Psychic or a predicted Encore and can either Sucker Punch it or Pursuit trap it. Even without the boost from it switching out LO Pursuit always OHKOes M-Alakazam. The only move in Alakazam's common arsenal that can outright OHKO Bisharp is the relatively inaccurate Focus Blast.

Spiritomb as a hard check / counter

Spiritomb @ BlackGlasses / Leftovers
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit
- Will-O-Wisp
- Knock Off

Immune to Psychic and Focus Blast, Shadow Ball 3HKOs, though it has a good chance to live 3 with leftovers + no rocks. Dazzling Gleam does easily 2HKO, but is relatively uncommon. Sucker Punch and Knock Off both OHKO easily, you can also try and Pursuit trap it, which actually has a 1/4 chance of OHKOing after rocks even if Alakazam stays in. Assault Vest with Foul Play > WoW is an option you want a chance at living two Dazzling Gleams (still 2HKOs after rocks though) as well as avoiding the 2HKO after rocks 100% of the time in the event that you get hit by Shadow Ball+SpDef drop on the switch. You'll also be able to click Pursuit twice to safely trap Alakazam even if you switch into a Shadow Ball, barring the first Shadow Ball getting a spdef drop followed by high rolls or two consecutive spdef drops.

Raikou @ Assault Vest
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Shadow Ball

Raikou can easily switch in every alakazam moves, if alakazam doesn't run psyshock or modest nature, and 2kho with shadow ball or with tbolt.

This is the best he can do:

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Raikou: 123-145 (38.3 - 45.1%) -- 10.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

All i need to do is switch on another move, and just spam shadow ball/tbolt

252 SpA Raikou Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Alakazam: 168-198 (66.9 - 78.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Raikou Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Alakazam: 142-168 (56.5 - 66.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
