Metagame USUM Pure Hackmons

Hello! I was playing this gamemode in Showdown whe I stumble upon a person who lead with this Sunkern... I tried the obvious by using "Ice beam" but to my surprise this Sunkern mega Evolved turn one, becoming the same type as Gyarados mega and with his ability, however stil using sunkern's sprite... I still don't know how this user did this in a random match, this was not premade, sadly I didn't save the clip... if someone has any idea of how this was possible I'd be glad if you can share the answer with me

That was a regular Gyarados with the ability Illusion holding a mega stone, I hope this helps.

It's been over two months since I last posted a personal VR and the metagame has gone through multiple small phases since. I've tried out more various Pokémon on the viability rankings, including some in the lower ranks, teams have more variety now thanks to spam teams falling off, and new records have been made from people rotating around all sorts of different teams. I've probably seen more games from other players than played games myself after February, but have still managed to play maybe 100ish games since?

I've made a lot of changes to the VR to accommodate to this. To be honest, figuring out the ranks below S was quite difficult for me this time, and I've noticed the game still has quite a ton of room to be developed. I've destroyed the ladder with sets almost nobody else ever runs and realized if more of those sets were around, or even similar sets but slightly altered in some way, this metagame would appear to look quite different than it is now. Well anyway, here is what I have in store now. I'll plan to make a post explaining plenty of these ranks, especially the ones that seem most questionable (like why I placed Pikachu at B and why I placed Mega Scizor so low on the Wonder Guard Viability Rankings)

Wonder Guard:
:Entei: :Arcanine: :Typhlosion: :Darmanitan::Magmortar: :Flareon: :Rapidash: :Simisear: :Ninetales: Any pure Fire-type for their Burn Up sets.
Pure Fire-types in the metagame don't stand very well as Wonder Guards as they for the most part are outclassed by other possible Wonder Guards such as Primal Groudon and Alolan Muk for having similar but less weaknesses, and usually higher defensive stats. However, the main strategy of a Pure Fire-type Pokemon with Wonder Guard is to utilize the move Burn Up, a move that removes a Pokemon's Fire-type after successfully hitting. With many viable Wonder Guards in the metagame, these types of Pokemon should find it hard to be able to successfully hit an attack, and even if they do, they can still be forced to switch either by phazing or by matchup, causing them to have to redo their main strategy. It is also worth noting that the ability of Wonder Guards to carry four moves in this metagame is a gift. Most of them use their four moves in order to support, recover themselves, boost stats, inflict status, and/or throw hazards. Their type combination is good enough to handle on their own without the absolute need to provide a move to get rid of their type. Pure Fire-type Pokemon who follow the Burn Up strategy can also struggle more heavily against Mold Breaker/Turboblaze/Teravolt Pokemon or Pokemon that have Photon Geyser or Moongeist Beam, making the entire point of the strategy lose any value it had.

Wonder guard VR update request. Zeraora UR -> B. It isn't the best, and is slightly outclassed by Greninja-Ash as a fast support mon resistant to sunsteel, however Zeraora is still faster than most viable wonder guards, and has a slightly less common weakness in ground. It's role as a niche subpass/fast taunt+pivot is useful, and thus I consider it to be at least better than the likes of wonder guard pheromosa, and on par with wonder guard type:null and houndoom-mega/MMY

I struggle to agree with this one. Zeraora really struggles to justify itself over even other niche fast WGers. Pheromosa, Mega Beedrill, Deo-S and Deo-A are all faster than Zeraora and have a lot more going for them. Deo-S obviously being the fastest 'mon, Pheromosa only being a speed tier lower than Deo-S and better in most other ways, Beedrill's stronger U-Turn and TSpikes absorption, and Deo-A being only yet another speed tier below Phero and being pretty strong both Physically and Specially.

While Zeraora is a bit bulkier than the aforementioned mons, it still hates coming in on any Mold Breaker move other than Sunsteel, and AshGren is already faster than pretty much every Sunsteel user anyways (aside from MMY who usually runs Photon/Moongeist alongside it and MLop who actually might be worth it but MLop doesn't run it very often anyways). There's also the fact that Ground is an awful weakness to have, being incredibly common especially on Sunsteel attackers; not even mentioning the Fissure weakness.

I can see the benefits: the Para immunity, different set of weaknesses and STAB Electric are all maybe worth it sometimes; But I'm gonna disagree with the placement here. I can maybe see it being C rank, but nowhere near a B ranking.

Why is Scizor in B

Why is Scizor in B
tl;dr fire-type moves are everywhere to the point where there's difficulty ensuring Mega Scizor is safe on the field. Mega Scizor cannot switch into Life Orb or Choice Band Mega Mewtwo X using Photon Geyser despite resisting Psychic-type. It also can't really switch into Moongeist Beam very well from Mega Gengar and Necrozma Dawn Wings. It is not a great Shell Smash sweeper as the major tanks of the game (Zygarde-C, Doublade, Mega Steelix) wall it with ease, and King's Shield can also take hefty advantage of it. In other words, there is no job it truly does well in and it being placed on teams would just be there for the sake of it. Mega Scizor works in super niche matchups where your opponent lacks anything for it but the circumstances are too inconsistent for me to rank it much if any higher.

This Pokémon is mad inconsistent in the long run in the game, requires great effort in order to support it, and relies on a more specific string of matchups to do anything than better Wonder Guards.

I find it quite consistent way more then pretty much everything in B it’s also a good emergency imp proof to jolly mmx since u need ad to break a full scizor and it can act as an additional form of protection against special photons since most can’t 2hit it after a smash and those that do are often weak to bug like ash gren and hoopa who u put in A+ as well as the fact it’s a toxic immune mon that isn’t weak to thousand waves or spectral or u turn or anchor shot with stab u turn meaning that it is hard to remove from play unless u have a fire move since an offensive mon takes a big chip from a u turn since it’s hard to ohko and most defensive mons can’t pressure it enough to stop a shore up so now it can continue to do its things

Mega Mewtwo X would much rather run Adamant over Jolly as the power difference is too significant to sacrifice for higher speed more often than not (this is the main reason Ultra Necrozma is much lower than MMX on the VR) and there aren't many circumstances where it'd need to worry about speed ties. It can either Shadow Sneak Mega Gengar or switch to a Mega Mewtwo X wall for opposing Mega Mewtwo X.

Walling special photons is not a feat relevant enough for it to stand out especially over other Photon walls. Fire-type moves are easy coverage options for those Pokémon if they ever have enough difficulty against Mega Scizor.

Hoopa-Unbound might be too high in hindsight but I don't see it and especially Ash Greninja as more than examples of niche matchup situations, as they can flip into fire moves to one-shot Mega Scizor with ease, with the latter not losing much out of it. Otherwise Mega Scizor can work against them indeed but I don't find Hoopa-Unbound too difficult to pivot out of with Wonder Guards taking neutral hits from it and eventually revenge killed by some form of priority. I believe Ash Gren can eventually have Judgment and Photon PP stalled out by Zygarde-Complete and Wonder Guards.

I find that generally ground is the preferred coverage of choice on special photons because of how kartana is way worse at walling special photons and how groudon and alolan muk can be particularly hard to break for special photons where fire only really hits scizor since the power difference between special fire moves and special ground moves are more negligible as well as the common steelix and doublade not taking special moves well at all, fire is also easier for zyguard to switch in on and haze zyguard is particularly hard to remove for special photons and also this isn’t if scizor is as good as lets say slowbro or ash gren it’s if it’s better then mega sableye and Mega Gardevoir which I think the gap between it and all of B is pretty significant

Blacklist - Do not discuss putting these on the VR

What ability does Pikachu get?

'Sup nerds, I made a VR. I've really enjoyed how the meta has developed, with Spam getting worse and more balanced structures getting better I've been having a lot of fun. That said it's hard to play this meta because the Ladder is more of a shitshow of shenanigans than an AG ladder. People have been getting to the 1400s with the worst teams imaginable just 'cause the ladder is full of a bunch of other people running similarly awful teams, and they clog up any ladder play with complete garbage. It's a very fun meta I just wish the ladder would actually play it. Because of this I haven't been playing as much lately, but I still believe in these placements.

I also wanna note, there's a few Pokemon on this VR (especially in the lower tiers) that I'm really unsure about due to a lack of experience, but I tried my best on them lol. Ho-Oh is an example of that, no one runs it and I've never run it but it seems alright.

I don't have much else to say, if any aspect seems strange feel free to ask about it.

What ability does Pikachu get?
Pikachu runs Imposter, which works with Light Ball as it leaves Pikachu being able to copy its target and have twice their offense stats. With proper speed support (Tailwind) the thing can be an absolute monster thanks to how nuclear this metagame's most powerful Pokemon can get. Otherwise it's forced into a 50/50 but winning those 50/50 speed ties can lead to insane results due to the double offenses, and those offenses are sometimes enough for Pikachu to even outdamage the opp in a 1v1. Finally, the Imposter can help Pikachu scout.

Edit for more clarification in case someone asks at some point:
Pikachu is normally D rank on Balanced Hackmons VRs and the likes but what separates Pikachu here from BH is how it can transform into many major Huge Power and Shell Smash/Extreme Evoboost threats, becoming much more difficult to deal with in the long run. Suddenly transforming into Mega Mewtwo X and having four times its raw attack makes it tremendously difficult to switch into for example.
In addition it's easier to run support for Pikachu here as Prankster is extremely good and they tend to have at least one filler move available.

GEN 7 VR UPDATE !!!

It's been almost a year since the Gen 7 VR was updated, and a substantial amount of metagame development has happened since then, especially with the establishment of a Gen 7 PH ladder. Innards that bluffs wonder guard (it sucks dont use it)
pretends to bluff WG* it doesn't actually bluff it since the WG set is unviable so it's very easy to just see right through if you know the Innards set exists

also it's a terrible Innards mon in it's own right

is this for gen 7 and 6 PH?

I would like to suggest a small change for the Comatose + Sleep Talk set for Gengar-Mega in the setpedia. My suggestion is to change moveslot three from Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom to Belch / Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom.

Comatose + Sleep Talk (Gengar-Mega) @ Choice Scarf / Leppa Berry / Focus Sash
Ability: Comatose
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid / Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sleep Talk
- Whirlwind
- Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom
- 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt / Clangorous Soulblaze / Light That Burns the Sky / Chatter / Copycat
Comatose + Sleep Talk (Gengar-Mega) @ Choice Scarf / Leppa Berry / Focus Sash
Ability: Comatose
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid / Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sleep Talk
- Whirlwind
- Belch / Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom
- 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt / Clangorous Soulblaze / Light That Burns the Sky / Chatter / Copycat
Small disclaimer
I would only run Belch if two things on the Gengar-Mega are being run:
1. The item is a Leppa Berry
2. The final moveslot is taken by a CFZ, preferably Clangorous Soulblaze, but I suppose one of the other suggested CFZs (10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt, Light That Burns the Sky) or my Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom could also work. I have not tried a CFZ other than Clangorous Soulblaze before on a Comatose Gengar-Mega set, however.

My reasoning
Belch has many positive aspects to it that allows it to work well on a Comatose set for Gengar-Mega. For one, unless the opponent’s Imposter has eaten a berry somehow, they will be unable to use Belch. Also, by using Clangorous Soulblaze (or another CFZ) alongside Belch, the CFZ can “unlock” Belch (while providing Gengar-Mega with boosts if it is Clangorous Soulblaze). Belch is also STAB for Gengar-Mega, uncallable by Sleep Talk, and has decent base power (120) and not-horrible accuracy (90%).

At +1 Speed, even without a positive Speed nature, Comatose Gengar-Mega (who I will now be referring to as ComaGar) outspeeds unscarfed Deoxys-Speed, even if the Deoxys-Speed has a +Speed nature.

+1 252 SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Audino-Mega: 440-518 (107.3 - 126.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252+ SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gardevoir-Mega: 458-542 (134.7 - 159.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252 SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Regigigas: 243-286 (57.3 - 67.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252 SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Regigigas: 322-381 (75.9 - 89.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Regigigas: 355-418 (83.7 - 98.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after 2 layers of Spikes

+1 252 SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Slaking: 339-399 (67.2 - 79.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Slaking: 495-583 (98.2 - 115.6%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO

+1 252+ SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Arceus: 250-295 (56.3 - 66.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252+ SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Diancie-Mega: 292-345 (96 - 113.4%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

+1 252+ SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Diancie-Mega: 292-345 (96 - 113.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after 1 layer of Spikes

+1 252+ SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Mewtwo-Mega-X: 312-367 (75 - 88.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252+ SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Mewtwo-Mega-Y: 274-324 (65.8 - 77.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252+ SpA Gengar-Mega Belch vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Slowbro-Mega: 360-424 (91.3 - 107.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after 1 layer of Spikes

Problems with Belch
-It needs you to run a CFZ and Leppa Berry
-Many top Pokémon resist or are immune to Belch, including Zygarde-Complete, Necrozma-Dusk-Mane, Gengar-Mega itself, and more
-You have to click your CFZ or run out of Sleep Talk/Whirlwind PP before you can use Belch
-Belch doesn’t hit very many Wonder Guards. However, it DOES hit Audino-Mega, and OHKOs at +1

Conclusion
Well, there was my rant on why Belch should be added. I have personally used Belch ComaGar, and the team it was on has become one of my favorites (to the point where that I may choose it to be the team for my first Pure Hackmons RMT). Well, that’s it, I guess.

What do I say now? Thank you for coming to my TED Talk?

Like most of those calc are on mons slower then you so you can just phase them
